  • Day 70: Sleeping on a volcano

    March 18, 2016 in Chile ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Yesterday Johan came to visit us in Pucon. So we celebrated with a bbq with beer and a lot of really bad jokes. It was a lot of fun to see him again after more than a month. Today we went to vulcano. We cycled to a private farm 40 km and 1000 m climbing from Pucon. There we could park our bike and most of our stuff. The lady told us it was already really late and that it was better to go tommorow. But we went anyway annd climbed the vulcano in 3 hours instead of 4. Just in time for the sun to set. We found a place for our sleeping bags and explored the slippery sides of the crater. Not having a tent with -2 on a windy vulcano with a incredible view was one of the most incredible experiences so far.Read more

  • Day 73: Being a backpacker for a day.

    March 22, 2016 in Chile ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Yesterday we made the most difficult dicision so far. After climbin the vulcano our knees started acting up again. On top of that it just became autumn here. We didn't make the kilometers that we wanted the last couple of weeks. So adding it all together we could only come to one conclusion. We had to take a bus take give our knees time to rest and make some progress north. We never said that we would cycle all the way but taking this step was really hard. So now after a night in a bus we find our selfs in a hostel in santiago. At least 2 days of being a tourist and relaxing before we get on the bikes again.Read more

    March 28, 2016 in Chile ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Back in Santiago to pick up our stuff to get the bus to La Serena. Saying goodbye to our friend in Santiago. It feels like home here so going is kind off a sad feeling. We couldn't find a taxi that would take our bikes. So we build our bikes up caried everything to the bus station and disasembled them again before getting on the bus. Almost back on the bike!Read more

    April 1, 2016 in Chile ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Setting out of La Serena we were really happy to be back on the bike. But also kinda nervous. This would be the first high Andes pass. So making a lot of jokes and singing aong we covered ground pretty quick. mostly thanks to the tailwind because the leggs are still in shock we covered 96 km and about 1000 m of climbing. Hopefully our bodies will adjust quickly. Tomorow and the day after tomorow are gonna be tough.Read more

  • Day 84: Altitude starts to kick in

    April 2, 2016 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Slowly the pass starts to get steeper. Today we made 75 km with 1700 meters of climbing. We decided to camp at an altitude around 2700 meters for mostly sybolic reasons. The higest we have ever been on a bike is Passo Dello Stelvio wich is around 2700 meter. At around 2000 meters we could start to feel the altitude. With still 2000 meters to climb we are kinda nervous about how it is gonna be. But first we sleep on top of the Stelvio, kinda.Read more

  • Day 85: Altitude sickness

    April 3, 2016 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We have long looked out for this day. Today we will get higher than we have ever been on a bike. But we are a bit scared as well. Can our bodies handle the altitude. From here it is all ripio to the top. Today we wanna get as close as posible to the 4000 meter mark. Tomorow we need to get over this pass to make it with food. After getting to 4000 meter we relized that altitude is no joke. Our bodies where exhausted. Every couple houndred meters it was pushing or resting. Tomorow is gonna be a tough day on the bike.Read more

  • Day 86: Longest day

    April 4, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Waking up at 4000 meters. Feeling like a hangover with weights on all limbs. Outside it is 1°C with terible wind. We feel like just laying down wait for somebody to rescue us. Somehow we found the motivation to make breakfast ( it took ages for the wayer to boil) and pack our stuff. It would take us around 5 hours to make the 22 km to the top. Stopping at every couple houndred meters to catch our breath. As soon as the grade got more than the standard we had to push. And even pushing made is loose our breath. There is just not enough oxygen here. Getting to the top was surreal. Nobody there and terible wind. We couldn't quite believe we made it because we tought about quiting ao many times. we quickly put on all the clothes we had to get as much down as possible. At the end of the day we could sleep at the police station at 3000 meters. This was definitely the hardest and longest day on the bike and maybe even of our lives.Read more

  • Day 87: Down, Down, Down we go.

    April 5, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We couldn't quite believe we made it to the top yesterday. But sleeping at 3000m made us able to recover a bit. Headeache was gone and the legs felt a littlebit better. Today we only had to go down another 1400 meters in around 65 km. So we just enjoyed the scenery. We are definitely ready for a restday to let our bodies recover.Read more

  • Day 88: This is why we came here.

    April 6, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Sleeping in till 9:30 and packing our stuff relaxed. We started cycling around 11. The sun was shining it was 28 °C and the asfalt was kinda good. So today was pure joy. Sometimes we need a really hard chalenge to remember where we are and what we are doing. To apreciate it even more. We only went to the next town San Pedro de Jachal. Here we will take a restday to decide where to go next. Ooh and today was milestone day. We are 3 Months away frome home and we did our 4000 st km. Hopefully many more to come.Read more

  • Day 90: Racing North

    April 8, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Having survived the high pass we set out for our last section in Argentina before hoping back to Chile. The comming days we will do the 800 km section to Cafayate. We started strong trough a beautifull valley with a little bit of rain. Nino decided to test his acrobatic skills by falling and getting away without a scratch. But soon we found a tailwind and raced with 40 km/h across the semi desert. We ended up making 105 km. Hopefully we will make quick work of these last kms in Argentina.Read more

  • Day 91: Bring your own swimming hole

    April 9, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Setting out of our sanbox campingspot we soon relized that the big downhill was over. The first 20 km were slightly uphill. But just enough to make it hard. After 40 km we decided it was time for a coffee break. 2 hours later we set off again. It has been drizzling the whole day but the last 20 km it became more like real rain. The french couple we met 2 days ago recommended a app called ioverlander which shows posible campingspot and other useful info. The campingspot for today is from the app. Acording to the app there should be "warm desert swimming holes". In our head we saw Jacuzzis full of beautifull women. At the spot we only found small stream with not so cold water. So we got in our tent to get some rest.Read more

  • Day 92: Just like France.

    April 10, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We woke up in a cloud. The rain hasn't stoped during the night. So we put on our wett clothes and set out again. Going downhill with rain is the best way to get soaked in no time. So after 55 km we decided it was enough. Wet and cold we found a cheap hotel with a hot shower. Tomorow is anothet day.Read more

  • Day 93: In line for the ATM

    April 11, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Yesterday we spend our last pesos on a steak. So this morning we had to find a working ATM. In Argentina that is easier said than done. Last night we walked all 8 ATMs of the city without getting any money. This morning the 3th ATM gave us after 20 min waiting finally some pesos. So we could get breakfast. We set out at 1 because we tried to wait out the rain. But we made good progress and managed to do 90 km before finding a place to camp near an abandoned building.Read more

  • Day 95: Sweat and thermal bath

    April 13, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We woke up with sun shining on our tent. It has been a long time since that happend. So we set out on this hot day. In the first town we crossed a french guy on a bike. He has been riding solo form Anchorage Alaska. Everytime we meet a fuy that has been cycling on his own for such a long time we notice that they are kinda mad. Cycling for such a long time apparently makes you kinda crazy. At the end of the day we found a deserted thermal spring in wich we could bath. 2 more days till Cafayate. Can't wait to be there!Read more

  • Day 96: grazy wind, nowind, grazy wind

    April 14, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Today concisted out of 3 parts. We set out from our campsite to find out that we had a crazy headwind. So the first 40 km we fought this crazy wind uphill. After the 40 km the wind completely disapeared for 30 km. Just to come back twice as strong as in the morning. But even with this wind we were able to make 105 km. So tomorow only 100 more to Cafayate. Then finaly a rest dayRead more

  • Day 97: We can smell the wine.

    April 15, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

The last day before getting to Cafayate. Hot again but we managed to cover the kilometers quickly. Meeting 2 spannish and 1 British guy. They gave us some local liquor from Cafayate. Luckely we only had to do 10 more km. This stuff gets in tour leggs. But we managed to gind a cheap campground at 3. So we finaly got to take a shower. Now it is time for some wine.Read more

  • Day 101: Windy suprise

    April 19, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Three restdays in Cafayate because Bob decided to get sick on the 2nd restday. But with all the winetastings and barbecues it was time to get back on the bike again. Next stop is Salta but it will take 2 days to get there. This morning Bob forgot his powerbank and mp3-player at the campsite. So after 10 km he dumped his luggage and raced back to get it. So after a late start we came to the mountains to find a terible headwind. That wasnt calculated in the plans. So in the end it turned out to be a hard, but not so hot day. Tomorow we make the last 100 km to salta.Read more

    April 21, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Today is the first day of our seccond crossing trough the Andes. First we tried to get ninos wheel fixed and some suplies to build our spare stove since our stove is acting up. So we left at 2 and raced to try to get as much altitude as posible. At 2300 meter we found a good enough place to camp. We are planning to get in 3 days to 3800 meters. Here we plan a restday before heading over the pass with several highpoint between 4300 and 4570. Hopefully this aproach will make it easier on our bodies.Read more

  • Day 104: Climbing slowely.

    April 22, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Today we set out maximum altitude to 3100 meters. This is to let our bodies adapt to the altitude and hopefully prevent altitude sickness. So we set out relaxed and made some progress early on. After noon a patagaonian like headwind apeared. This made progress slow and hard. But after some long breaks we made it to 3100 meters in only 44 km. So tomorow another 60 to our goal of 3800 metersRead more

  • Day 105: Abra Blanka 4080

    April 23, 2016 in Argentina ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

The goal for today was 60 km and making it to 3800 meters. Little did we know that there was a 4100 meter high pass in between. The wind made it a really though day.
