On July 5, 1963 my 18-year old mother two weeks after her high school graduation enlisted to serve her country in the US Navy. One of 5,000 women on active duty at the time, she grew her career and shattered glass ceilings. She was one of the first women allowed to stay on active duty after becoming pregnant.
