• Kinabalu is cool

    We landed in Kota Kinabalu at night, and headed to a hotel. After a little drama that Kiran had lost his new tablet, we got a car and set off driving towards the north east. Soon enough the busy road turned upwards and our eyes were set on Mount Kinabalu. At 4000 m it stands tall as the giant of tropical Borneo.

    We went into Kinabalu Park to explore the high montane forest and check out the birds and insects. As a clue to the secret travel ahead of him, I had given Kiran the Birds of Borneo book to look through. We set off looking for the endemic specials of Kinabalu.

    We saw Whitehead's Trogon and Pygmy squirrel, but the broadbill eluded us - 100 other dedicated features with thermal scanning cameras who were on the road. We spent three days in and around Kinabalu Park, and with the cool mountain weather and the warm nature of the people we met, Kiran simply described our time there as "cool, beautiful and colourful".
