    Richmond

    Richmond, about 25km north east of Hobart, is arguably Tasmania's premier town and is undeniably picturesque. The town's most photographed landmark is the Richmond bridge, was built by convicts in the 1820's and is the oldest bridge in Australia. The much visited Richmond gaol is the oldest gaol in Australia, and tourists frequent tours there to receive some insight to the hardship and brutality of convict life. The oldest remaining Catholic church, St John's, built in 1836, is found in the town and still holds regular service for parishioners.
    To Angela's delight we found the Richmond footy ground, not quite the MCG but nevertheless it was a chance to take a pic with the AFL grand final winners book .    Læs mere

    Freycinet National Park

    Freycinet National Park is one of Tasmania's oldest , best known , and most loved national park.
    It is characterized by rugged granite mountains, coastal forests and fine white beaches. One of these beaches is the famous Wineglass Bay and is a arc of talc-white sand fringed with clear waters. The walk to the lookout is not quite a lazy stroll as you have to make a steep climb to the top. Unfortunately we also had to deal with mother nature who decided to give us a generous rain soak, and due to heavy cloud cover our view was not post card perfect but still amazing !Læs mere

    Coles Bay

    Bicheno

    Bicheno is still a fishing port with brilliant ocean views and lovely quiet beaches. It is a popular destination with holiday makers and retains a lazy, sleepy feel.
    Bicheno is part of the East Coast whale trail. During their annual migration, whales can be spotted off the coast line in the area.Læs mere

    Fingal

    Fingal, established 1827 as a convict station, with strong evidence of its heritage, lies in the heart of the Fingal Valley. It is a small sleepy town west of St Mary's and the drive is through beautiful farmland with abundant beef cattle , sheep and spray irrigation.
    Viewed from the township is Ben Lomond National Park , a craggy alpine plateau that is Tasmania's answer to the ski runs of Aspen. From the road we could see the last of winter snows - an engaging site to see.    Læs mere

    Ross

    Ross, situated 120km north of Hobart, is a town full of colonial charm. The town was established in 1812, and was set up to protect Launceston-Hobart travellers from bushrangers. It developed into an important coach-staging post at the center of Tasmania's wool industry. The famous bridge at Ross, was built in 1836, and is the third oldest bridge in Australia. It enabled passage across the Macquarie River.
    Today the town of Ross has plenty of country feel, an array of accommodation and history to keep tourists satisfied.    Læs mere

    Tasmanian Devils

    Assuming the Tasmanian Tiger , Thylacine, is extinct, the Tasmanian Devils is the largest carnivore marsupial in the world. They mostly eat insects, small birds, rodents, and can be seen feasting on modern day roadkill. Tasmanian devils are about 75cm long, with short stocky bodies covered in black fur with a white blaze across their chests.
    However occasionally they can stand upright on just two legs and have even been seen wearing sunglasses and driving a car !!! Clever little devil !    Læs mere

    Huon Pine

    Tasmania's Huon Pine is one of the slowest growing and longest living trees on the planet. Individual trees can take 2000 years to reach 30 meters in height and live to 3000 years. The timber is prized by shipwrights and furniture makers for its rich golden hue, rot resistant oils, fine grain and fragrance. Fortunately it's now a protected species, but in the past suffered devastation by early wood cutters who searched for the forest 'yellow gold '. The Huon pine products you see today are manufactured from recycled timber or comes from dead trees salvaged from riverbed and forest floors.

    Lunch Stops.

    There is nothing like a cuppa in the great outdoors. Duncan has awarded best pie to the Swansea bakery for their lamb and vegetable pie and best vanilla slice to Ross bakery. Best wine for trip surprisingly was to the chardonnay we bought at the cellar door of Leven Valley Winery and finally whilst Mawson has been a smashing little lunch/dinner guest-he was outdone at the town of Ross when Mumma duck and her 8 very tiny ducklings joined us for lunch, gorgeous !!!Læs mere
