Rainy day on the Tassie East coast.

      March 5, 2020 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Woke up and the van was in a massive puddle. Some big heavy rain which was due to last all day.
Closest indoor place was Iron House, a brewery and distillery.
So got a paddle of their beer and their gin. We tried the wine yesterday and it was nasty! Out of their 6 beers, none were particularly nice.
After the 3 gins. Same story. All a bit like paint stripper. Maybe we should have gone for the cheese.
Left after having a brownie and drove to a cellar door called Priory Ridge. Had an excellent tasting with an old lady, in a wooden shack and a wood burning stove.
We purchased a bottle of their Chardonnay for the evening.
Picked up some overpriced blue cheese and crackers from the farm shop in town then set off to find a camp spot in the bay of fires area.
Got a spot right on the beach overlooking the crashing waves. Some big surf coming through.
Had a sophisticated evening of french jazz, chardonnay and blue cheese. Magnifique.

      Easter Escape: Beyond St. Helens

      March 30 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

The next morning, dawn painted the sky in soft hues as we rumbled south, eager to delve deeper into the Bay of Fires. The corrugated dirt road finally relented, surrendering to a smooth ribbon of bitumen just before St. Helens. This little town, once a familiar sight just a week ago, now thrummed with Easter Saturday energy. We decided to bypass the bustle and continued towards The Gardens at the Bay of Fires. Here, a vibrant tapestry of red unfolded before us – the Red Rocks, their fiery hues courtesy of a tenacious lichen.

The Easter crowds had certainly claimed their territory amongst the rocks. Despite the bustle, we persevered in our exploration, determined to unearth the hidden gems of this area.

Swimcart Beach beckoned, a place that already felt like home after our previous visit. We pulled in, the familiar scent of the ocean filling our lungs. With picnic baskets overflowing with hot cross buns and steaming cups of tea in hand, we settled on a seaside table, the gentle rhythm of the waves a soothing soundtrack to our lunch.

Refueled and refreshed, we topped up the tanks of both bus and van, setting a southerly course. Our eventual destination: Triabunna, where Grammy had secured us a boat tour to the enigmatic Maria Island. The miles flew by, the journey a shared adventure with Grammy that filled us with a warm sense of togetherness. Finally, we pulled into a free RV camp nestled beside the Iron House Brewery – a perfect pitstop to cap off a day brimming with exploration and the joy of reconnecting with family. Tomorrow we would make the final drive to Triabunna.

      St Helens to White Sands

      March 1, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

We stopped for afternoon tea in St Helens to re-evaluate what we were going to do this afternoon. The weather was pretty horrible and looking to get worse as the afternoon went on, and then we discovered there was no internet in the entire state due to 2 of the 3 cables to the Australian mainland supplying internet and voice services being damaged or cut. We decided to continue on to White Sands Resort and got settled in to our villa here before the weather really did take a turn.
But the accomodation in White Sands is great. Very comfortable.
The more we drive around Tasmania the more we think, the drivers here are terrible. They drive in the middle of the road, cut corners and are just downright inconsiderate. This coupled with the narrow and windy road in places has made driving here a but hairy. But we are still having a great time and looking forward to 2 nights at White Sands.

Relaxing day at White Sands & Iron House

      March 2, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Today was a chilled day at White Sands, and really what a honeymoon and holiday should be about.
We slept late, and when we finally got up, headed to check out the facilities available at the White Sands resort. We checked out the huge swimming pool they have available as well as the games room and Cinema facilities provided to the guests. It really is an excellent facility they have here on the grounds.
One of the other facilities they have here is the winery, distillery and brewery for Iron House. We went into the tasting room and tasted some very nice whiskey's, wines & beers that are produced by Iron House. It ended up being a nice lunch of drinking while Millie played in the play room they have there for children.
We were planning to take Millie to the cinema for a 2.00 movie but she really wanted to go for a swim instead so we swam for about 45 minutes before it started raining and we went back to our room so we didn't get to wet.
We spent the afternoon resting and recovering from our tastings...
It looks like it is going to be another rainy night. Tomorrow on to Coles Bay.
