• Trieste bus drivers

    Nov 5–10, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

The bus drivers in Trieste all reckon they are Michael Schumacher, that brakes are only for absolute emergency, and it's pedal to the metal for brakes and accelerator. That in the windy streets of Trieste with sharp acute bends every few metres where its either uphill or downhill makes it an exhilarating or nauseating ride. If you happen to to be standing with suitcases, it makes the ride very treacherous. Worse if you have these easily manouverable 360° 4 wheel suitcases. Don't for a moment be fooled into thinking that securing a seat would solve those problems. We had seats yesterday, and wore hiking pants that unbeknownst to us are actually quite slippery. The buses have smooth plastic seats. We had to plant our feet firmly on the floor of the bus and hang on for dear life to not end up sliding down the aisle of the bus with our dignity disappearing into the Gulf of Trieste.

We hope for calmer bus drivers and straighter roads for future rides.
