• Trieste Day 2

    November 4, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Today turns out to be a day of free entry into any museum across Italy to mark national unity. So we took the opportunity to go to Miramare Castle which was an hour away by bus from Trieste. The castle was built by Maximillian of the Hapsburg empire as he was very taken by the Gulf of Trieste. He, however never saw the finish as he was assassinated in Mexico. The Castle was beautiful with gardens and an eclectic collections of antiques and paintings.

It was very opportune too that there was a Coffee Festival at Piazza della Borsa with, of course free coffee and coffee liqueur tastings. A definite stop at the Piazza before more sight seeing.

After coffee, we continued with the second half of our self guided walking tour to the Jetty called Molo Advace, The Grand Canal, 2 Orthodox Churches and the Roman amphitheatre ruin.

The Greek Orthodox Church of San Nicolò dei Greci was nothing to look at from the outside and did not reflect the splendor that was to be found within.

Serbian Orthodox Church of Saint Spyridon was even more spectacular. Decorated on all 4 sides of the outside of the church with mosaic and beautiful architecture, whilst the inside of the church was equally splendid.

It was a long uphill via the Cathedral again and we got there just in time for the sunset.

Dinner was a simple meal cooked at the accommodation of salmon, bought from the market this morning with a broccoli looking vegetable called Romano and silver beet.
