Perth to Wongan Hills via Toodyay

    August 29, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

It was almost 10.30am before we drove out our driveway. We had to harvest all the lettuces and some chard, and wash them all for the trip. Of course that included some last minute quick vege gardening, Pit stop at Bakers Hill Pie Shop before Toodyay. Pies were outstanding. Chunky pieces of juicy steak and gravy encased in light crispy flaky pastry. The town of Toodyay was very quiet. Most shops and cafes were shut. Lady at the Visitors Centre directed us to Wongamine Reserve enroute to Wongan Hills. We spotted our first orchids of the season; jug, cowslip, china blue, donkey and one china white (looks like china blue but white, and I it looked too fresh to be an old colorless china blue). Camping tonight at The Gap , next to Mt O'Brien, Wongan Hills. There was a group of 3 camper trailers when we arrived, but they are very quiet. A lovely clear night for start gazing, except for the lights from our fellow campers.Read more

  • Mt Matilda, Christmas Rock and Mt O'Brie

    August 30, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

We had a very successful orchid hunt today. All three venues had so many variety of orchids. There was ant orchid, spider orchid, cowslip orchids, jug orchids and lots and lots of donkey orchids. Not to mention countless other wildflowers. At Mt Matilda, and Christmas Rock, there were descriptive signs at regular intervals, detailing the flora and fauna of the region, which were very informative.
The views were magnificent from Mt Matilda and Mt O'Brien. There were 5 lookouts along the Mt Matilda hike with vistas of canola fields and the edges of the mesa were spectacular.
Mt O'Brien has a 360⁰ views of the lakes, canola fields and Wongan Hills township. We also watched the sunset and the stars from Mt O'Brien, once night set in.
We returned to the campsite to find that we were the only ones camped tonight.
    An amazing day.

  • Gathercole Reserve, Billiburning

    August 31, 2022 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

We had breakfast and lunch at the same cafe in Wongan Hills Township. There were only three to choose from and the bakery that we went to yesterday was alright but not wonderful and the other is the"Wong" one.
At the cafe Ruby found a pamphlet on Gathercole Reserve and it sounded interesting. There were wild orchids, rock formations, gnamma holes with tadpoles and lots of other flora and fauna.
At the visitors centre, the elderly volunteers gave good advice on where to go to find wild orchids and flowers. Even gave us directions to an old railway dam that is now not in use, unmarked, to hunt there.
We had a cold bucket shower when we got back to the campsite as we were the only ones there. Then it was time to decamp and head out the Billiburning Rock. Got here quite late but was all set up by sunset.

  • Billiburning Rock

    September 1, 2022 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Our day started with a yummy omelette for b breakfast, then a hike at the top on the ridge of Billiburning Rock.
Chatted with a group from Adelaide, then a group from Perth and lastly before we settled for lunch, a couple from Queensland, Carol Anne and Ian. Carol Anne was in a shoulder sling so I could not help but ask why. This led to a treatment session for frozen shoulder in their caravan.
Another hike around circumducting the Rock in search of the elusive gnamma hole. We finally found a water hole but don't know if it is the gnamma hole or another called the soak.
We were treated to an amazing variety of wild flowers and orchids. It is so amazing that wild orchids are found just steps from where we have set up camp.
Tonight will be our last night as rains and thunderstorms are forecasted for the following days.
