    No wining in Bordeaux

    November 6, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

TIL (today I learned) bord d’eau (or Anglicized to Bordeaux) means Waterfront. This beautiful city is on the river Garrone which has direct access to the North Atlantic, making it a really good shipping hub.

The day started very foggy and chilly. Went to the local Park+Ride, caught the tram and headed downtown anyway. Once there we took our new favorite Petit Train tour, 45 minutes of seeing the most popular tourist spots so we could better plan our walkabout. Past the St Michel and St Andre churches with their detached bell towers. Detached because the city is built on a filled in marsh (sounds like most of Florida) and the weight of the tower would have damaged the rest of the church! Those towers make for spectacular views and ornate architecture.

In the 12th century, Bordeaux switched between French and English rule following the marriage of Eléonore, Duchess of Aquitaine and the last of the House of Poitiers, to Henry II Plantagenêt, Count of Anjou and the grandson of Henry I of England, who succeeded to the English crown months after their wedding. Locals loved the free trade with England as they were able to trade their wine for wheat and cloth, greatly improving their lots in life.

In 1653, Bordeaux was annexed back into France where it remains to today.

    Sunny days and cafes

    November 7, 2024 in France ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Today cleared up a little earlier. By 10 we had blue skies and cool weather to wander around in Bordeaux. We went back to some of the sites we had seen from the Petit train. We started with the large public garden, nice walking path, ponds full of ducks and swans, lots of dogs frolicking about.
From the garden we could see the victory statue aka Monument aux Girondins, so we headed over to it.
The Girondists were the most militant part of the legislature at the beginning of the French Revolution. However, in October 1793, the Girondists were executed under the orders of one of the leaders of the Revolution, Maximilien Robespierre after they began opposing the movement. The victory angel on the top is surrounded by fountains with mythical figures. The square it’s on is used for various activities for the city, the next one is the Christmas market starting at the end of November.
From the park we went past several of the never ending churches around. We ended up the day with visits to a couple of cave vino, or wine cellars
We may or may not have acquired some Christmas gifts there. Patience please. As Oregon Welles used to say “we will serve no wine before its time”

    Au revoir!

    Le Parc de Majolan

    November 8, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Our niece, Piper, has encouraged us by all her park adventures to find some in France too. We have! Le Parc de Majolan was gorgeous and we walked a little over 2 miles.

This park was built in the late 1800s by diverting a swamp to create lakes and creeks around various Roman and Renaissance era ruins. There are many small caves in the park which are off limits to explore. It’s a great little treasure in the suburbs of Bordeaux.

A good way to spend the morning of a “do nothing” day. However, we did go to 7 antique stores/brocante shops. We love to checkout old stuff. The morning was not so good. Only 1 of our places was open (despite posting that they are open). It was a little high end and furniture brocante. We went to the park then had lunch back at the Airbnb. Then we set off again for a few stores and again all were closed but one. Ugh! 😑 we did have fun driving around the area and the parc was a great find.

We leave in the morning for Nantes, a quick stop over before we head to Rouen early next week.
