Alberta traffic jam: Rocky Mountain SheepLake Herbert on Icefields Parkway

    Kananaskis Country / Icefields Parkway

After a lazy morning, I continue through the various provincial parks in Kananaskis Country before stopping in Canmore for supplies. Driving day today, as I follow the world famous Icefields Parkway as the scenic option on my way to Mount Robson and Wells-Gray PP. Not very scenic today with rather cloudy weather, I plan to spend more time here at the end of the month.

    Jasper to Mount Robson

Drinking coffee with view of three glaciers is something that I don’t do very often. But that’s the advantage of being able to camp right next to Athabasca Glacier it’s two neighbors! as it’s cloudy here, I continue onto Jasper where it’s hot and sunny. I walk the.Valley of Five Lakes Trail, one of my favorite last year with incredibly colored lakes. Continuing on to Mount Robson, the highest mountain in British Columbia - I will see you last year, but the visibility was very bad because of the smoke from the wildfires. This year, no smoke! Last stop is Overlander Falls before I move to my campground at Mount Robson.

    River Safari to Wells Gray

I made my way from Mount Robson to Wells Gray provincial Park today, where I will spend the next three days. On the road I stopped for the River Safari in Blue z River, a tour on a canoe, then jet boat that I already did last year and great enjoyed. Last year was cold and foggy, today the weather was perfect.

I took an all day boat tour on Clearwater and Azure Lakes today. The day started out sunny and fine, while we were at rainbow beach for swimming / canoeing/ lunch all of a sudden clouds and rain - a short thunderstorm. The lake looked very different on the way back. Beautiful in every respect and every arm, the color of the water is unbelievable.

    Wells Gray Day 3

More waterfalls today on various hikes and viewpoints in the southern part of the park. It was very hot today! For the first time since I’m on tour, after three nights with no power and not a lot of driving during the day, my battery got really low and I needed to go to a campground with power to recharge it. And you may see it from the hazy air and the pictures: wildfires in the area… it has been hot and no rain for three weeksもっと詳しく

Today I drove up to Trophy Mountain, a place where you can access high alpine flower meadows and great landscapes on a 12 km hike. On the road up I saw my first moose!

    Kamloops to Salmon Arm

I spend the morning on administrative stuff like shopping and doing the laundry. Then I’d arrive to the city of Kamloops and actually hike up a local mountain for a view of the city in 40° heat. It was … hot … but the view not too bad considering wildfires have started. I continue to Salmon Arm, one of my favorite places for birdwatching last year. Highway 1 is closed for construction and the official detour is 20 km gravel road! The dust was partially so thick you could hardly see the road.

The fire smoke haze is terrible today. I decide to hike the Stanley Glacier Trail in Kootenay NP - one of my favorite trailers last year. Not being able to enjoy the scenery, I concentrate on the small things - flowers and animals. Overnight in Banff.

Lake Moraine is another place that’s unbelievably popular, for good reasons: the color of this lake is really unbelievable. But you have to take a shuttle to get there and then to escape the crowds I hiked to Consolation Lakes. In the evening, I went to Vermillion Lakes just outside Banff, another birding hotspot and very beautiful.

I wake up and it’s raining! Good that I had planned to spend the day in Banff and visit 2 museums anyway. The Whyte Art Museum and the National Park Museum - the letter is a relief from the past, both building and exhibits of taxidermy animals an example of how natural history museums were supposed to be in the 20s. The weather improves, and I walk to Bow Falls and the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, where I allow myself a nice dinner (and WiFi to post all this)もっと詳しく

    Elk Island NP

After a morning of biking for some and working on getting settled back into the house, I take Stephan’s friend Reno and his son Carlo, who will go to school in Edmonton for 6 months, to Elk Island National Park. We walk along Astotin Lake and get really lucky at Bison Loop on the way back: we see a large herd of Plains Bison up close! Elk Island is one of the few places that has herds of both Woods and Plains bison.
