    8.9 Semuc Champey

    Semuc Champey is the most common and attractive spot in the region. At least for tourists. They go to Lanquín and stay there, or visit one of the few hostels/hotels dir colt at Semuc Champey.

    Semuc Champey are a natural arrangement of pools in the middle of the jungle. Interestingly, the river which provides the water is going underground, while it feeds water to the surface above it, filling and creating these pools (see last picture).

    You can either go there from Lanquín by pickup truck, in which case you will be standing on the loading area and having to hold your self on to the railing, or you can hike there which takes 2-3 hours instead of 45 minutes. And you can enjoy the nature better.

    The water is cold but nice. I recommend staying there a few days.    Leggi altro

    8.10 Antigua

    Antigua is a nice little city near the capital and very frequently visited by tourists. There are also many language schools there.
    The architecture reminds of an old roman city but also include baroque type of buildings.

    The most popular activity though, is hiking the volcanos around the city; which I did of course.    Leggi altro

    8.11.1 Acatenango (hike)

    Because it was so awesome and beautiful, I will make two posts about the volcano hike on Acatenango.

    The story is, that at the end of November the volcano Fuego (fire) erupted. As a matter of fact, Acatenango’s peak and the one of Fuego are more or less 2 km apart, which makes Acatenango a perfect spot for hobby photographers, nature-fanatics or people simply looking for a wonderful view.

    Besides the medium difficulty (my opinion) of hiking to the basecamp, which was the worst I have ever been to, the biggest challenges are the cold up there (really really cold) and the 1 hour hike at 4 am in the morning from the basecamp to the peak of the volcano. The last 200 m are mainly 5 mm grained dirt; Meaning you take one step upwards and slide two downwards. Really exhausting to get to the 3900 m high peak.

    Nevertheless, it is worth it because the sunrise is beautiful. And the other volcano (Fuego) as well ... stay tuned for the second post!    Leggi altro

    8.13 Scenic view of Lago Atitlán

    On my way to Lago Atitlán, right before I had to take a nice mountain path down to the lake, on which you loose about 10m of altitude for every 100m you get closer to the lake, I had this incredible view of the Lago Atitlán. Really, really nice; So I stoped for a little scenic photo shoot.

    8.14 San Marcos

    Before I start my Spanish course in San Pedro I stay 2 days in San Marcos, a small little town inhabited by yoga fanatics and wannabe hippies!
    But it is very nice and the restaurants their have good food with a larger variety than usual.

    The water however is quite cold and sadly also a bit contaminated, because the rain washes all the dirt and dust of the streets right into the lake.

    Still a nice place to relax. And by the way, basketball is a huge thing here! Although I would be taller than most players!    Leggi altro

    8.15 San Pedro La Laguna

    If there is one thing that appears on world‘s maps more often than Santa Cruz, than it is San Pedro. I have visited so many San Pedros on this journey, that I stopped counting them. This one is called San Pedro La Laguna (The Santa Cruz at Lago Atitlán, like all other cities, also have the suffix “La Laguna”).

    The power of the ancient

    This is where the boy was meant to study the old Latin language we nowadays call Español, or for the non-spanish speakers: Spanish or Spanisch. Living amongst them who have the power to speak the old (and new) words of this language, the boy was supposed to learn from the wise masters and non-masters and chosen to practice their rituals. He was not just thought the ancient ways by the women of Orbitá but also by the mighty people of San Pedro La Laguna. From a no moon to a full night, it was told, one needs to study the idioma to possess the knowledge to speak the words of the past, preset and future.
    But it shouldn’t be this easy for the boy, once so ambitious to acquire this power.

    Learning a language

    I was to study Spanish in San Pedro, which I also did for 2 weeks. Four hours per day, excluding the week end. Of course, homework and vocabulary training. To get even more involved, I did a home stay with a local family (nice). The school I went to is named Oritá and lead by René, who founded the school and developed his “own” teaching concept.
    The time in San Pedro was super, but who the f* developed so many nonsense irregularities for the language. I guess only topped by French, there are so many rules and deviations that are completely random and sticking with the “regular” rule would make things so much simpler and would even make the words sound bad.

    Anyway, ... I keep practicing! Quiero hablar español!    Leggi altro

    8.16 Finca El Paraiso (Rio Dulce)

    Before crossing the border to Honduras, I had to take the advantage of visiting the hot springs near Rio Dulce, which I totally recommend.

    The hat water comes down a waterfall and mixes with the cold(er) river water, so you have cold feet and a boiling head. Of course it’s not hat extreme ...
    There is also very hot magma chambers very near to the surface (only a few kilometres) which make the river bed at some parts very hot, and I MEAN very hot. Intact, the continuous rise of some hot gas cracks some stones and super hot bubbles emerge. Even the wood above one of the bubble streams seems to „be burned“ without flame. And I can tell, you get burned, too, if you step on one.    Leggi altro

    9.1 Lago Yojoa

    We made it again. Almost up to date with the blog, actually it is up to date. Almost, because it is the 17th of January and not the 15th, but actually still, because there is nothing else to post.

    Anyway, the days at Lago Yojoa were super nice, met a friend again with whom I was also at the hot springs. Even more awesome, because after my stay in San Pedro Sula I was already changing my mind about Honduras; It is not a terrible, dangerous place, but rather a country with very nice people who are often very good at speaking English and super helpful. Although the security issue has to be taken a bit more serious as in other Latin countries. But if you stay out of the wrong areas at night (and day) you can go anywhere. Freely walk around the city, nothing alarming here. La Hamaca Hostel, also super cool. And eventually an internet connection that allows me to upload my footage. However, one important thing is still missing and I know I owe you this one for a while. But it only needs to be uploaded ... stay tuned.

    One more thing: If you look at the location of this footprint, it is a little misleading. The green area around the wood walk is actually water/swamp, not meadows, as it might look like.    Leggi altro

    10.1 León (Nicaragua)

    If there is one thing I can say about Nicaragua so far, then it is totally worth it and not an issue to travel at all at the moment. There are no protests at the moment and even if, are they purposed towards the government and not the tourists. I feel totally safe as I did in Guatemala.

    Hostel awesome, weather awesome (~35°C), water awesome, cat awesome, ... life awesome!

    Even turtles in the museum of art, which is a great one by the way, although they could think about the grouping of the pieces, high does not seem to follow a rational?!?    Leggi altro

    10.2 Staying at the beach of León

    The sand at the beach of León is not white nor black, but a darker grey in between. This makes the sand get very hot ... very!
    Even the water is quite warm, although if you are still wet the wind provides a solid chill. Consequently, you (sun)burn yourself while feeling cold if you are not careful, because the sun is intense.

    Other then that: nice food, nice sunset, nice stay!    Leggi altro

    10.3 León Cathedral

    I visited the cathedral of León witch is kind of a must do, because it is the largest of its kind in Central America. It full name is „Insigne y Real Basílica Catedral de la Asunción de la Bienaventurada Virgen María“. What a tongue breaker.
    Although it is not super impressive, I still liked it and walking on the roof is a cool thing.

    Because of that specific day I was there, I also attended (unintentionally) the celebration of poetry, which is a big thing in León.    Leggi altro

    10.4 Apoyo Laguna

    On my way to Granada I stopped at the Apoyo Laguna which is a volcano cater filled with water that is a bit salty but considered fresh water.
    Funny thing is, although you can almost swim to all sides, it is super wavy! Also because of the string wind that is blowing there. This is actually since I entered Nicaragua. Super strong wind here. Don’t know why that is!Leggi altro

    10.5 Masaya Crater

    While I was staying at the lagune, it was an easy ride to take a look into a crater of an „active“ volcano. The gat to the underworld, muhahaha!

    Well, maybe, .... but the pictures can’t tell the story how nice it was to look down into that hole. Very cool. Not many people at night and a super cool view into the lava lake. With your own eyes, ... magnificent.Leggi altro

    10.7 A night on Tahiti island (Granada)

    The owner of Hostal Azul (Darío) invited some people of the hostel to join his birthday party on a little island near to Granada. So we prepared and went with the boat.

    It was awesome. Lot of fun there and as well in the hostel. Total recommendation!

    10.9 Chaco Verde Natural Reserve

    Important after a long ride ... relaxing on the „beach“. Well, not a ocean beach, but a Lagoon / lake beach. The whole island is very windy and the water quite rough, though surprisingly warm.

    10.10 Maderas Volcano

    Finally, another volcano to hike. And it was an adventure! Starting with the way up: The carve your way through jungle on slippery and muddy ground until you reach the top, where you are presented a beautiful view which you can enjoy while your head is being blown around by wind bows.

    The way down on the other hand was very different. Much more mud and slippery stone, as well as exposed tree roots you have to walk on. Even better, it was getting dark. Very dark. So the only way to see were the phones, because we had no other light source. Took us longer than expected.    Leggi altro

    How random is that?
    We ran into two couples that were also with us in the hostel in Granada. Three different groups independently met on Ometepe at the “Maria Jesus Sunset Spot”, without knowing that the others were there as well.
