Some very well preserved mosaics just on the edge of Skala village. Free, and with informative signs. Although I'm surprised there's no mention of the stone in the Byzantine part that is very clearly reclaimed from an olive press.Read more

Spot the lizard

It's quite a good holiday for seeing animals, but not a great one for photographing them (apart from cats).

Lizards hide. The swift chicks are tucked away in a dark corner and the adults are too fast. Butterflies are too unpredictable to catch on camera. The goats are an unseen clonkling over the crest of the hill - until this afternoon when they decided to break out and wander into town, chased down the road by their owner on a moped. Cicadas are audible but virtually invisible until one attempts a short blundering flight and hits you in the ear. And the nightjar only comes out after dusk.

I do have some excellent pictures of a hummingbird hawkmoth, but on the other camera so they will have to wait til I'm home.Read more

No trip to Greece would be complete without cats. Not the armies of them I've seen elsewhere - the local animal trust has a catch, neuter and release programme - but still plenty. Mainly sleeping.

Some have evidently slipped through the net of the neutering programme. Including one imminently expectant mother who came to check out our room just before we left. We ushered her out before she decided a suitcase was the perfect place to have her kittens.Read more

Normally in airports I like to get through security as soon as possible and wait on the far side. Not in Greek regional airports. In those the best plan is to check in your bags then find a nice cafe just outside the airport to sit in until the plane before yours has boarded.

This is what happens if you go through 1 plane early. Standing room only, in the area that doesn't have aircon because the doors are always open.Read more
