    Strandhotel Margaretha

    August 8, 2019 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Big balcony - yes, that's all ours - with a lake view. Smallish room but with a deep bath for post-walk soaking. And on the 4th floor so we get plenty of exercise even if we do no more than climb up and down for breakfast and dinner.

The town is tiny, but well supplied with every shop you could want - including one that sells only things made from apples. We started with a wall around the easy part of the lake, taking us to Strobl. The water is amazingly clear and I think we found why - it appears to have a giant plug so they can drain it down for a good scrub every winter.

  • Shafbergbahn

    August 9, 2019 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Trip up the mounfain on the cog railway. A very rattley journey to some spectacular views, including looking down the sheer drop behind the alm to see crows playing on the thermals and a falcon hunting below us.Read more

  • Pilgrim's way

    August 12, 2019 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Up and down the pilgrims' way from St Wolfgang to St Gilgen (the wrong way), past the spot St Wolfhang threw his axe from*.

    Saw:
    • An ingenious solution for those on the steeper slopes to get their shopping up to the house.
    • A very entertaining crucifixion scene. Thief 1 bored stiff, thief 2 quite enjoying the rest, eye rolling sarcastic Jesus, and a centurion doing ... well, I've no idea what the centurion is doing, but he'd clearly like some appreciation for his calves while he does it.
    • Beautiful bit of the lake once we got back to the very welcome flat.
    • Excellent fence construction.

The rain held off until we'd finished the walk, but made up for it for the rest of the day.

  • St Gilgen cable car

    August 15, 2019 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

An old cable car, with tiny, very spaced-out cars. Which means it only moves just under 4 people a minute at maximum capacity.

So it's a very pleasant 16 minute ride up, with good views. But over an hour in the queue to get on. And the same back down.

At the top there are plenty of alms, and a huge choice of walks - although very few blue ones. We did the pilsen panorama rundweg. About an hour on good paths, and not too much up and down. Certainly can't fault it on the panorama aspect: mountains in all directions (with regular signposts to tell you what mountains they are) and several lakes overlooked. Also some helpful posters of footprints and flowers you may see. The latter had a bee rather confused because it could see beautiful huge flowers, but not get into them.
