An Orkney Island day trip certainly opened our eyes
Stories of Scapa Flow & Skara Brae a pleasant surprise
Completely unaware of what treasures lay under the peat
Ongoing excavations at Ness of Brodgar an inspiring feat.

Devoured fresh crab sandwiches in main town Kirkwall
Enamoured by mysterious Stennes stones standing tall.
Had to laugh when seeing a sign for the local village of Twatt
Amongst a treeless landscape from the coach where we sat.

Energy produced from the ocean’s wind turbines
Many avian flu bird carcasses littered the shoreline.
Estuary banks attract large noisy colonies of seals
Who with a tumultuous splash dive for fish meals.

At Culloden Moor we learned of the Jacobite bloody fight
Sterling’s Wallace Monument is a very impressive sight.
We farewelled Scotland walking Edinburgh’s Royal mile
Kilted bagpipers producing spontaneous jigs and a smile.
