    July 23, 2022 in England ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Arrived in Birmingham as the Commonwealth Games start
Time to collect sister, hubby and hire car before we depart
On a U.K. road trip popular now for a staycation
Discovering natural wonders of this British nation.

Up the busy M6 to Cumbrias Penrith our first stop
To appreciate the Lake District’s beautiful backdrop
Of dry stone walls segmenting lush greenery
Pink coloured fireweed brightening the scenery.

Mono-chromed cows, homes, crows and sheep
Amongst dark grey slate in ravines that run deep.
Ripples on lake surfaces reflecting blue
Parking to enjoy it, limited and too few.

Clouds lowered into mist, weather became dull
All the small towns were crammed and full.
Drove the twisting trek known as Honiston Pass
Glimpsing numerous waters from hillsides of grass.

  • Stirling

    July 28, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Transversed the Pennines, an area desolate and bleak
Towards long Hadrian’s Wall with forts to take a peek
At Roman engineering and their lives lived before
Thankful to now live in peace and not facing war.

Followed by modern engineering of the Falkirk Wheel lock
Plus the enormous Kelpies sculpture, where so many flock
To gaze in humbled awe at this infamous sight
It’s changing colours totally mesmerising by night.

A desire to visit Scotland’s west was thwarted by midges
So headed north east via one of the River Forth‘s bridges.
Through Aberdeen’s granite centre with buildings steely grey
Onto a friends place, the lovely golfing village of Cruden Bay.

Wandered the iconic quays and harbour of Peterhead
Savouring fresh salmon from a local smoking shed.
Quaint fishing villages and chipperies in which to dine
An obligatory lighthouse warning of this craggy coastline.

  • Cairngorms National Park

    August 7, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Dotted with castles and ruins from times long ago
Oft Celt and Pict unexplained stone circles show.
When the Haar rolls in an eerie silence does ensue
As the misty grey dampness obscures all from view.

Ventured into the Highlands past golden fields of barley
Twisting roads a magnet for cyclists and maybe a Harley!
Wee Tarns amongst Fells plus the occasional Ben
Craig piles on Loch shores deep within a Glen.

Purple heather was mesmerising beginning to bloom
Brief picture perfect moments to make one swoon.
Time to visit a gin or whiskey distillery should be put aside
Along with watching barrels made at a cooperage Speyside.

Picnicking at Tomintoul, highest town in the Cairngorms
Spying stags and Highland cows with impressive horns.
Red squirrels, ospreys and otters decided to lay low
As expected at Loch Ness the monster did not show.

From the A9 views over river Firth and the Port of Nigg
With it’s structural towers of decommissioned oil rigs.
Absorbing stunning coastline whizz by up to Wick, our stop
To explore John ‘O’ Groats and the Scottish mainland’s top.

    August 25, 2022 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

An Orkney Island day trip certainly opened our eyes
Stories of Scapa Flow & Skara Brae a pleasant surprise
Completely unaware of what treasures lay under the peat
Ongoing excavations at Ness of Brodgar an inspiring feat.

Devoured fresh crab sandwiches in main town Kirkwall
Enamoured by mysterious Stennes stones standing tall.
Had to laugh when seeing a sign for the local village of Twatt
Amongst a treeless landscape from the coach where we sat.

Energy produced from the ocean’s wind turbines
Many avian flu bird carcasses littered the shoreline.
Estuary banks attract large noisy colonies of seals
Who with a tumultuous splash dive for fish meals.

At Culloden Moor we learned of the Jacobite bloody fight
Sterling’s Wallace Monument is a very impressive sight.
We farewelled Scotland walking Edinburgh’s Royal mile
Kilted bagpipers producing spontaneous jigs and a smile.
