    Lighthouse Part 2

    The final walk up to the lighthouse is very steep…so much so that we walked backwards just to take the pressure off our legs 😂
    The lighthouse is no longer manned and has been tastefully restored to accommodate visitors who can stay overnight.
    You get an insight into early life in such a remote location and the difficulty of getting supplies to the area before roads and 4wd tracks had been established. All supplies in the early years of the operation of the lighthouse were delivered by sea which made the experience even more interesting as the seas in the area were often rough for small dinghy’s ferrying stores from the main ship.
    There are amazing rock formations on the way up to the lighthouse one of which is called ‘skull rock’ that show just how powerful the elements are in eroding the granite stone over millions of years.    Lue lisää

    Lighthouse Part 2

    The last part of the walk to the lighthouse was very steep and for some part of it I walked backwards.
    The lighthouse has been tastefully restored by Parks Victoria and can comfortably accommodate up to 20 hikers in different huts.
    On the way in there are some amazing rock formations one appropriately called skull rock which has been formed into a unique shape by the winds and airborne salt over millions of years.    Lue lisää

    Lighthouse

    This was the second leg after lunch and a swim in quite cold water and very refreshing nonetheless.
    My back and my feet were starting to complain at this point as we had covered about 15kms and the next section was the most challenging with the track being quite overgrown in parts and quite a steep incline…I should have swum to the lighthouse 😂😂Lue lisää

    First Day - 24 kms with Pack

    Well this is such a beautiful part of Victoria and so lucky that it has been protected fro the future.
    Having not walked further than 10-12 kms for a long time this was definitely a wake up call.
    Fitness is very specific and a 20kg pack is actually quite heavy.
    Nevertheless we saw some beautiful scenery and were in the company of two close friends who always make for enjoyable conversation.
    The walk was from Mt Oberon cat park to the lighthouse…    Lue lisää

    Day 1

    This is the first day of the walk which is why I am smiling.
    The weather was ideal for bushwalking and stayed that way the whole time which was fantastic.
    In hindsight whilst I was happy with the achievement of walking to the lighthouse, walking 24 kms with a 20-22kg pack was more than I enjoyed. In this situation 10-12kms a day is what I would enjoy most.Lue lisää

    Warrnambool

    We spent sometime at Warrnambool which is a coastal regional town.
    Probably the highlight was coming across a Macaw 🦜 that one of the locals had as a pet and understanding more about the habits of these magnificent birds.
    As you might imagine they require an extraordinary amount of time and care for them to be happy and healthy as a pet.

    The name "Warrnambool" originated from Mount Warrnambool, a scoria cone volcano 25 kilometres northeast of the town. Warrnambool (or Warrnoobul) was the title of both the volcano and the clan of Aboriginal Australian people who lived there. In the local language, the prefix Warnn- designated home or hut, while the meaning of the suffix -ambool is now unknown. William Fowler Pickering, the colonial government surveyor who in 1845 was tasked with the initial planning of the township, chose to name the town Warrnambool. The traditional Indigenous owners of the land today are the Dhauwurd Wurrung people, also known as the Gunditjmara.    Lue lisää

    Beauchamp Falls

    We walked into Beauchamp Falls with Ace which was fun and worth the effort at the end when you see the falls.
    This area is in the middle of a coup of forest trees that are regularly harvested for timber so driving in was quite an experience as we had to pass through quite a few hectares of cleared forest 🌳 before arriving at the campsite and the walk to the falls.Lue lisää

    Port Campbell

    We arrived in Port Campbell on a stunning day…32 celsius and no clouds in the sky.
    Port Campbell would have to be one of the most picturesque places and a beach that is pristine and perfect for developing a love of the beach and safety.
    One aspect of this beach that I did not understand was the presence of a surfing break that exists just outside the mouth of the small bay that comprises the beach.

    The port and the town are named after Captain Alexander Campbell, a whaler and colonist of the Port Fairy region.

    The town was settled in the 1870s, with the first wharf being built in 1880. Port Campbell Post Office opened on 19 March 1874. It was renamed Port Campbell West in 1881 when a new Port Campbell office opened near the wharf. There were hopes of a rail connection when the Timboon line opened in 1892 but the state government vetoed the idea in 1916.

    The town became a centre of infamy in 1970 when the bodies of a family from Melbourne were discovered in a car that had fallen over a cliff, see Crawford family murder

    The town used to be the centre of a football competition known as the Port Campbell Football Association that operated from 1927, it reformed after WWII as the Heytesbury Football League and ran until 1991.    Lue lisää

    Beech Forest & Redwood Trees

    We travelled to see the Californian Redwood trees at the behest of Steigs and glad we did as they are such an amazing tree…so straight and tall.
    I have included some extra information below:

    Redwoods of the Otway Ranges is a small sheltered grove of Coast Redwoods, Sequoia sempervirens, about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of Beech Forest in the Otway Ranges in southwestern Victoria.

    The trees, known by some as Californian Redwoods, were one of many conifer species planted experimentally at different locations in what was to become the fledgling Aire Valley Plantation.

    The trees, planted in 1936 by the Forests Commission Victoria, were initially slow to establish but have thrived and grown to a height of over 60 metres (200 ft). Measurements in 2004 show the trees have the potential to reach as tall as their Californian counterparts if left undisturbed from bushfire, pests and disease, or trampling by tourism.    Lue lisää

    Forrest

    It seems that I lost interest in taking photos here :( as I only captured two both on the drive up.
    We met with Steigs and Mandy and enjoyed lunch with them at the Forrest brewery where I enjoyed a favorite dish of mine chicken karage which is fried chicken done in a Japanese style.
    Steigs wanted me to take a photo of him in his Aston Martin which I did and you can just see it…with a beautiful shot of Apollo Bay in the background.

    Onion Building and Tower Bridge

    The iconic tower bridge of London and the aptly named onion building due to its interesting architectural style.

    Tower Bridge is a Grade I listed combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, built between 1886 and 1894, designed by Horace Jones and engineered by John Wolfe Barry. The bridge crosses the River Thames close to the Tower of London and is one of five London bridges owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust founded in 1282. The bridge was constructed to give better access to the East End of London, which had expanded its commercial potential in the 19th century. The bridge was opened by Edward, Prince of Wales and Alexandra, Princess of Wales in 1894.

    The bridge is 800 feet (240 m) in length and consists of two 213-foot (65 m) bridge towers connected at the upper level by two horizontal walkways, and a central pair of bascules that can open to allow shipping. Originally hydraulically powered, the operating mechanism was converted to an electro-hydraulic system in 1972. The bridge is part of the A100 London Inner Ring Road and thus the boundary of the London congestion charge zone, and remains an important traffic route with 40,000 crossings every day. The bridge deck is freely accessible to both vehicles and pedestrians, whereas the bridge's twin towers, high-level walkways and Victorian engine rooms form part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition.

    Tower Bridge has become a recognisable London landmark. It is sometimes confused with London Bridge, about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) upstream, which has led to a popular urban legend about an American purchasing the wrong bridge. Several stunt pilots have flown underneath the bridge, including the pioneering Francis McClean.

    War Memorial

    This is the first visit to the war memorial in over 30 years.
    It is a magnificent place steeped in tradition, recognition and the glory and futility of war.
    The memorial is being extended to almost double its existing size to house more battlefield history especially in more recent times.
    The attention to detail of each exhibit especially the dioramas are so impressive that you feel you are almost in battle yourself.
    When you visit the reflection pool you realize just how many wars Australia has participated in…something that I hope will stop now as more modern remote controlled missile systems remove the need for boots on the ground and identifies a changing of the guard in relation to thinking about modern day battles.
    Good to visit the war museum to realize the honor and prestige the National Wartime museum represents to the great contingent of soldiers who served and died to keep Australia free.    Lue lisää

    You Yangs Hike

    Our first practice walk in preparation for the Three Capes Walk in Tasmania later in the year.
    Bonus being able to take Ace who walked almost all of the way :)

    The You Yangs Regional Park is a park in southern central Victoria, Australia. The park encompasses much of the southern areas of the You Yangs, a granite range that rises from the Werribee Plains, 60 km southwest of Melbourne. The park is operated and managed by Parks Victoria and is open during daylight hours.

    Situated within the traditional boundaries of the Wathawurrung (Wathaurong/Wada Wurrung) Aboriginal tribal lands and once home to the Yawangi Baluk (local clan whose territory extended to Port Philip), the You Yangs (Wurdi-Yawang) shares historical significance with Australians of non-indigenous origin.     Home Trip

    We called into one of the little towns on the way home…Avoca. Some of the architecture was so reminiscent of the early years when every town had a bank and the other essential stores such as hardware, hotels etc
    This little town had only recently established a Chinese style garden which paid homage to the early Chinese settlers in the area that travelled to Australia to find their fortune with gold.    Lue lisää

    Cooking food over a campfire is a really cool experience and provides an insight into just how much energy you burn finding wood and then creating the fire and then keeping the fire going.
    The nights were very cold so we had to ensure that Ace was sufficiently warm...and as you can see we had the best weather imaginable for the experience.
    I was looking forward to doing some four wheel driving close by however the one track that was close by only went for a couple of hundred metres which was a little disappointing.
    Having said that being able to take the car off road is really cool.    Lue lisää

    Lots of great books to read whilst you stay in the tiny house.
    The Consolations of Philosophy was especially enlightening and it was fun to read up on Socrates, Montaigne, and some others. I have much in common with philosophers it seems with the work I do and the people and issues we discuss.
    Jen created this amazing dessert which was comprised of marshmallows, dark chocolate, gluten free biscuits and peanut butter layered on top of one another and then cooked over low heat on the campfire...delicious.
    We also did quite a few walks around the different areas of the property which was also very relaxing.    Lue lisää

    Some more beautiful shots of the surrounding country. This destination was very well thought out as you have minimal contact with anyone else and so the solitude is very real and all encompassing.
    It is a great place to go device free and immerse yourself in the experience of being of the grid.
    The tiny house was also very well appointed and had everything that we required to enjoy our stay...I especially liked the campfire mitts and the iron campfire pan.    Lue lisää

    This is such a beautiful location and such a great place for this little house to be situated.
    It has everything that you need to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings...small kitchenette, bathroom and bedroom.
    Cooking over an open fire is also very enjoyable and last night I cooked vegetarian Mexican inspired tortillas with cauliflower, beans, cheese and halloumi.    Lue lisää

    On the Way...

    This weekend away is Jen’s 60th birthday gift from Ty and Ally.
    So we left mid morning to travel to Avoca and stopped at a cool little eatery called Zest on the way.
    Very highly rated on google and delivered...
    Lamb salad and big veggie breakfast for the golden girl.
    The new car is so enjoyable to drive which makes all road trips very pleasant.    Lue lisää
