    Melk Abbey is an active Benedictine monastery situated in the Wachau Valley on a rocky hillside above the town of Melk.

    The abbey was founded in 1089 when Leopold II, Margrave of Austria, donated one of his castles to the Benedictine monks of Lambach Abbey. A school was founded here in the 12th century and continues to operate to this day. The Library is famous for its large collection of books and manuscripts and continues to be a top research destination. However, the Melk Abbey is most famous for being the best example of high baroque architecture in Northern Europe. The Abbey Church is simply beautiful.Leggi altro
