Serving Slovakia: to Amsterdam & Vienna

    July 7, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

It was such a kind gesture for both the Edmond's and the Boe's to meet us at PDX to see off the Serving Slovakia team. We're blessed to be part of such a caring church! We arrived in Amsterdam the next morning and took the train from Schipol to the central station. We enjoyed a beautiful canal cruise with a lunch of sandwiches and drinks. In the afternoon, I led a small group on a walking tour through the city. It was a very hot day, so we stopped for ice cream on the way to the Dam Square. We also stopped at a shop to sample a variety of Dutch cheeses and at a pannekoeken shop to share a batch of poffertjes. We had time to see the Begijnhof and Bloemenmarkt. We rode the train back to Schipol around 5 pm and caught our flight to Vienna. Our heads didn't hit the pillow until midnight. It was a long day, but we powered through the jetlag. We leave tomorrow morning at 8am for Martin, Slovakia! 🇸🇰Read more

  • Arriving in Martin

    July 9, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Today, we arrived in Martin to a very warm greeting from the staff of the Center for Christian Education. After lunch, we set up our classrooms for the upcoming week. As we were walking through town to our hotel, we stopped for ice cream. A teenage boy heard us talking and said, "it's the Americans!" We introduced ourselves to Oliver, Vincent, and Maxum, and they told us they would be in our class next week. They spoke English very well and we had a nice visit for almost 30 minutes. We went to dinner with Ralph and Bev at a local pub and then walked around town in the cool of the evening. Tomorrow is the first day of class!Read more

  • First day of class in Martin

    July 10, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Today was the first day of class, and both Stacy and I met our students. She has four teenage boys, and I have five adults. During our free time, my group took me into the village for tonic espresso. It was similar to an iced americano but made with raspberry infused tonic water. Delicious! After class, Katka and Majka took eight teachers on a beautiful hike on the Teplické serpentíny trail to a viewpoint of the Teuric valley. It was very scenic and a wonderful way to end the day.Read more

  • Second day of class in Martin

    July 11, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Stacy added one more boy to her group today, and they are all kind and appreciative. It's only our second day, and she's trying to figure out how to bring them all home with her! I had my walk and talk today with four teenage girls. I asked them what they'd like to do, so we went for coffee. They were all very sweet, but I could have used the help of my niece Emma! After class, the school organized a trip for us to visit the nearby town of Zilina. We visited the head protestant church in this region of Slovakia and were treated to a beautiful organ recital. We then stopped at a museum that houses a private collection of Byzantine icons. The curator explained the history of iconography in the Eastern Orthodox Church and presented a sample of their collection. We stopped for a delicious dinner at a local brew pub and then stopped briefly at the Church where the Slovakian Lutheran synod established the first official protestant church in the country. It was another amazing day spent with the warm and generous people of the Center for Christian Education in Martin.Read more

  • Day 3 of class in Martin

    July 12, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

At today's "Walk and Talk" we formed a baking group where we discussed some of our favorite recipes. We covered a few English baking terms and discussed how to convert recipes from English to metric units. We even started a WhatsApp group so we could share recipes with each other.

Stacy had another wonderful day with her boys. They created a video commercial for a Slovak candy called Alaska. On their walk, they went to the small village store where the boys had fun pointing out their favorite Slovakian sodas. All of them had a great time!

Majka and her husband Mickey invited several of us to a wonderful dinner at their home. We were treated to a variety of delicious Slovakian food and drinks followed by homemade cakes by Katka and Majka for dessert. After dinner, we went on a walk through the fields behind their home, accompanied by their daughter Rebeka and dog Rocky. The sunset was spectacular! It was an amazing evening with our dear new Slovakian friends.

  • Day 4 of class in Martin

    July 13, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Today, we continued to practice common idioms. Each table group also prepared a skit to illustrate how verb tense relates to the timing of actions. All the students seemed to have fun with it. After lunch, we watched the 4th segment of the movie Holes. More clues have now been revealed, so the students are excited to guess how the movie will end.

Stacy's boys worked on another art project where they made a poster for a local restaurant. They also wrote a new story based on a cartoon character. Their story was about Puss in Boots losing his boots in winter on a trip from Ohio to California. They also learned about pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.

We went to the grounds of a local Roman Catholic church for a picnic dinner that included homemade pizzas from a wood-fired oven. After dinner, Adrian taught us four Slovakian folk songs. It was another wonderful day in Martin, Slovakia.

  • The end of the first week

    July 14, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Today, we finished the first week of class with our students. They created a funny skit that was themed on travel and business to demonstrate their knowledge of ten idioms. My group included three extra idioms and won a prize for being the most creative. We went for another coffee during our "walk and talk" and had a nice conversation about travel. In the afternoon, we finished watching Holes and had our final discussion group. Then we had a time of sharing gifts and saying hopeful goodbyes - that we would see each other again soon.

Stacy's class enjoyed watching their commercials even though they were a bit shy about their performances. On their "Walk and Talk," Benjamin insisted on treating her to ice cream, and the other boys gave her chocolate. After lunch, they had fun making and flying airplanes.

After class, Stacy and I stopped by Rasto's Adventure Sport store to do some shopping. I found a nice pair of sandals and Stacy found a hat for walking in warm weather.

In the evening, Stacy went to a party at the school celebrating the end of the VBS program. A gypsy band performed, and there was singing, dancing, and delicious food!

I was invited to join a group heading to a local brewery. We road electric scooters, which was a new and exciting experience for me. We all enjoyed delicious food and beer, but most of all, the conversation and friendship. I commented that I liked the brewery t-shirts being worn by the staff and was disappointed that they didn't sell them. I had a wonderful surprise when Anka presented me with a shirt. She knew the owner, called him, and he made a special trip to bring a shirt to the brew pub for me. It was such a kind and meaningful gesture! At the end of the evening, we rode our scooters home, but this time a bit more carefully after the festive celebration!

  • Spiš Castle

    July 15, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

This morning, we traveled by bus to Spiš Castle, a National Cultural Monument. It's the largest castle in Central Europe and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.

Construction of the medieval castle dates back to the 12th century when it served as a fort on a major trade route in the feudal Hungarian state. Afterward, it became the seat of the Spiš region for many centuries.

In the second half of the 15th century the reconstruction of the castle fell upon its new owner Štefan Zápoľský whose intention was to remake it into a stately aristocratic residence. His son Ján, later King of Hungary, was born at the Castle.

In 1780, the castle compound was destroyed by fire and gradually fell into ruins. The total decay of the castle was prevented by conservationists who began restoration work, which started in 1970 and continues to this day.

  • A day of Praise & Thanksgiving

    July 16, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

This morning, we had the pleasure of worshiping God with our dear Slovakian friends. The service and singing were all in Slovak, but they provided a real-time translation for us. For one hymn, we were given the words to sing in English. Even across language boundaries, it's unmistakable when God is present.
We are so thankful for this opportunity to serve others. Yet, we know without a doubt that we are receiving the greater blessing from our dear new friends.

    July 17, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Today, we began our second week of class. Stacy has two returning students, Benjamin and Thomas, and two new students, Mike and Adam. It's another sporty group of boys, and they had fun taking Stacy to the big bouncer in the city square during their walk and talk. In my class, Roman is my only returning student. I also have Natali, Marek, Eva, and Ela. On our walk and talk, we stopped for lemonade and discussed traveling. After class, a teen boy in another group named Adam stopped me to ask about my interest in video games. It was a good topic to break the ice. For dinner, a group of us went to a traditional Slovak restaurant called U Jakuba. The food was delicious, and it was fun to share experiences with the other teachers.Read more

  • The Istebné Articular Wooden Church

    July 18, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

In the year 1681, the hard economic and complicated political situation in Hungary forced Emperor Leopold I to summon the Sopron Assembly, which issued 72 articles. Articles 25 and 26 were related to freedom of faith. Based on article 26, the Lutherans were allowed to build 2 churches in every county. However, the churches must be situated outside of the city center, built only of wood, and completed within one year. The parish in Istebné lacked the funds to build a church but received financial support from Nordic congregations. Although decorations were sparse, and the people could only afford a wooden chalice, the church became the home of a faithful congregation that worshiped in times of hardship and oppression.

Bohdan shared with us about Psalm 23. He reminded us to focus on the basics: Jesus is our good shepherd, we are helpless sheep, and he rescues us from death to life.

After our visit to the church, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at a traditional Slovak restaurant.

During class today, the students created a sales pitch to present to Uncle Hub and Uncle Garth. My team performed a creative skit and song to sell Slivovice. It was a lot of fun! Stacy's class decorated flower pots during art class and then gave them away to strangers during walk and talk.

After class, Bohdan gave us a tour of the school and explained how education has served as a bridge for sharing the love of God with the people of Martin Slovakia.

  • St Margita Church, Turčianske Jaseno

    July 20, 2023 in Slovakia ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

This afternoon, we worshiped at The Gothic Church of St Margita in Turčianske Jaseno. The chapel is a unique example of Slovak folk architecture that dates from the early 13th century. It is one of only three remaining chapels of its kind and has been designated a National Cultural Monument in Slovakia.

Our worship service was small and private. Adrian led the service, Bev and I were asked to read scripture, and Bodan gave a sermon on Pentacost and the gift of the Holy Spirit. We all sang hymns and participated in communion. It was a beautiful time to thank God for all he has done for us and specifically for this wonderful experience to be a part of His work in Slovakia.

  • From Martin to Vienna

    July 22, 2023 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

We said goodbye to our friends in Martin this morning as we boarded our bus back to Vienna. We arrived in the early afternoon, dropped our bags at the hotel, and then headed into the city to explore.

We decided to visit Café Central, one of the most famous coffee houses in the city. It opened in 1876, and at the turn of the 20th century it was a popular meeting point for leaders in the world of art, literature, politics, and science such as Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud. Peter Altenberg and Leo Trotski. We enjoyed a light lunch followed by apple strudel for dessert. Delicious! After lunch, we walked past St. Stephan's Church on our way back to the train station. During the ride, Stacy befriended a sweet 9 year old girl traveling with her family from Japan. The girl taught Stacy a hand clapping game as she sang a little song. So adorable!

  • Budapest - part 1

    July 24, 2023 in Hungary ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Our first stop in Budapest was Gellért Hill for a stunning panoramic view of the city. The hill is named for St. Gerard Gellért who was killed by pagans by being placed in a barrel and rolled down the hill into the Danube River.

Next, we visited the Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church in the Castle District. The view across the river toward the Hungarian Parliament Building was amazing. We stopped at a small Café, Ruszwurm Confectionery, where Empress Sissi had platonic conversations with a man, not her husband. She was assassinated when word got out. Many believe the assassin was hired by her husband.
