  • Dürnstein & Danube River

    25 Temmuz 2023, Avusturya ⋅ 🌧 63 °F

Our first stop this morning was the medieval town of Dürnstein. It has a beautiful abbey, but its true claim to fame is that Richard the Lionhearted was imprisoned and held for ransom in the castle on the hills above the town. England paid the ransom (currently valued at roughly $3B) to Austria to secure his release.

We began our leisurely Danube River cruise in Spitz and enjoyed the beautiful scenery as we journeyed toward Melk.

  • Melk Abbey

    25 Temmuz 2023, Avusturya ⋅ 🌧 66 °F

Melk Abbey is an active Benedictine monastery situated in the Wachau Valley on a rocky hillside above the town of Melk.

The abbey was founded in 1089 when Leopold II, Margrave of Austria, donated one of his castles to the Benedictine monks of Lambach Abbey. A school was founded here in the 12th century and continues to operate to this day. The Library is famous for its large collection of books and manuscripts and continues to be a top research destination. However, the Melk Abbey is most famous for being the best example of high baroque architecture in Northern Europe. The Abbey Church is simply beautiful.Okumaya devam et

  • Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens

    27 Temmuz 2023, Avusturya ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Schönbrunn Palace was the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers. It was named Schönbrunn (meaning "beautiful spring") after an artesian well located on the estate. The palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural, and historic monuments in the country.

Franz Joseph, the longest-reigning emperor of Austria, was born at Schönbrunn and spent a great deal of his life there. His wife, Empress Elisabeth, more commonly known as Empress Sisi, was both the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary. Her fondness for Hungary and friendship with the nobility in Budapest is credited with the peaceful formation of the Austrian Hungarian empire.

Following the downfall of the Habsburg monarchy in November 1918, the palace became the property of the newly founded Austrian Republic.
