    Flying to Ft. Lauderdale

    The December ice storm of 2022 cleared just in time. Our flights were on schedule, and we made it safely to Ft. Lauderdale. We're a bit tired from taking the red-eye, but we'll be able to rest and relax once we make it onboard the ship. We're looking forward to a wonderful, warm, and relaxing adventure in the southern Caribbean.Leggi altro

    Sint Maarten / St. Martin

    Today, we visited the Dutch West Indies island of Sint Maarten. The island is divided - half as Dutch territory and the other half as French territory. We went on a scenic drive to the French capitol city of Marigot and then went on a cruise of the Dutch harbor. The lagoon and bay were such a beautiful blue and the sunset was spectacular.Leggi altro

    St. Lucia

    Today, we visited the island of St. Lucia. We went on a tour to the far side of the island, stopping at a few scenic viewpoints to take pictures. We visited a sulfer spring and a cocoa plantation and garden. Guess which one Stacy liked best? Back on the ship, we put on our fanciest clothes for a special New Years Eve dinner and celebration.Leggi altro

    Barbados

    Today, we visited beautiful Barbados! Our first stop was the Gun Hill Signal Station, used by the British to warn of escaped slaves or rebellious uprisings. Next, we visited the Tropical Botanical Gardens, where we saw numerous plants native to the island. Our final stop was the Sunbury Plantation, the home of the Mount Gay Rum Distillery. Barbados claims to be the original home of rum production. Molasses is a plentiful byproduct of the sugar cane industry on the island and is used along with yeast and water to produce rum.Leggi altro

    Martinique

    Today, we went on a wonderful tour of Martinique with Sabastiano, an Italian gentleman who has made the island his home. We visited the Sacré-Couer Catholic church modeled after its namesake in Paris and enjoyed the view of Fort-de-France below. From there, we journeyed into the rain forest, stopping to view waterfalls and a botanical garden. The La Paz rum factory was closed for the holiday, but we were able to view the château and grounds. We stopped at the ruins of Saint Pierre, the city destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Pelé in 1902. Then, a brief stop at a black sand beach before driving the scenic coastline back to Fort-de-France.Leggi altro

    St. Kitts

    Today, we visited the island of St. Kitts. Our tour took us to the Romney Manor Gardens and the Caribelle Batik factory and studios. The gardens were lovely, and it was uplifting to hear Christian worship music playing in the gift shop. Next, we visited the Brimstone Fortress perched 800 feet above sea level. It is one of the best preserved colonial fortresses in the Caribbean and was the focal point of numerous battles between the British and French for control of St. Kitts and other nearby islands. The rain was chasing us as we left the port in Bassaterre but also gave us a beautiful rainbow. We had a delicious dinner at the Tamarind restaurant, and we dressed in preparation for the orange night party.Leggi altro

    St. Thomas

    Today, we visited St. Thomas. Our tour took us on a scenic drive around the island, stopping at Mountain Top for a banana daiquiri and views of Megan's Bay. Then we drove through the city of Charlotte Amalie and past Fort Christian, built by the Danes when they first came to the island. We rode the tram up to Paradise Point and did a bit of shopping before returning to the ship for a relaxing evening.Leggi altro

    Fort Lauderdale

    We arrived back in Fort Lauderdale at sunrise. After a quick breakfast, we joined a tour of the city that included a cruise of the marina. We had a bit of time to stroll through an art fair. Then it was off to the airport and our flight home. Mitch and Melanie greeted us at the airport and gave us a ride home. It was a wonderful relaxing vacation!Leggi altro
