    Sorrento & Herculaneum

    Up early and headed off to the ferry (we decided the bus to Sorrento would be a bit hairy after the last two days). So that went a bit south - the trip on the ferry (Sorrento via Capri) was very rough. We stayed on the top deck and got sprayed with water and blown around by winds - really out in the elements. I would not have wanted to be in a smaller boat. Anne then spent the day exploring Sorrento and Ian and I headed for Herculaneum - the secret sister city of Pompeii. It actually reminds me of when i saw Pompeii first in 1982 - a city still being discovered.. It was so good. Had an audio guide and got lost in history for a couple of hours. The Italian/Romans were so advanced for their time. And when back in Sorrento, Anne had picked out some good bits to explore, ending up at the Restaurant of the Garden and all of us had a decent steak - would recommend it!.Baca lagi

    Off to Sicily

    Up early and caught the train to Naples before boarding a plane via Rome to Palermo on the island of Sicily. We were met by our driver who spoke zero English. He took us to his very nice black Mercedes and then proceeded to terrify us by driving on the freeway at speed - I saw the speedo hit 164 (note that the local limit is 130) and he was consistently around that sort of speed!!! But we got to Scopello safely where we were met by the lovely Cecilia who explained all about the local area and our walk tomorrow to Zingaro National Park. Dinner was in the Pensione and magnificent.Baca lagi

    Scapello Day 2

    5 September 2024, Itali ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

    Breakfast included and so good. Cecilia was still on duty (?) and brought us out so many delicious goodies - bread, lemon jam, ricotta, prosciutto, cheese, tomatoes (real ones not like we get at home) and endless cups of tea or coffee - can you tell I have been missing a good breakfast 🤣. Then off to Zingaro National Park. A big day! Walked a track that was rough and up and down along the costal path. We walked to the Cala Della Disa (beach - again what the Europeans think is a beach) and went for a swim in the Mediterranean. The water was lovely apart from the fish that would bite your feet. It was definelty a work out! By the time we got back was just looking for a shower! Then off to the cute little bar again for a beer before heading out to dinner.Baca lagi

    Getting to Trapani

    Left our little Pensione in Scopello rather reluctantly. Picked up by our transport - not so fast this time and were taken to the start of our walk - on Monte Monaco. Our driver again did not speak English and left us at the end of a dirt track with a printed note to meet him at B63 at 1pm. So we headed off. And i thought yesterday’s walk was tough! We literally went straight up a mountain for 484m. By the time we got to the top my watch was telling me we had done 90 steps of stairs and I would believe that we were at the top of a 90 storey building- so high. And the heat/humidity did not help. Coming down on the other side was not quite so hard, but still not easy - but we got to the bottom and our driver was waiting. Absolutely a sense of achievement. We were then taken to the seaside town of San Vito Lo Capo for the afternoon and a look around. Walking seemed like a really bad idea so we found a nice hotel with a seaside balcony for a late lunch - and again some spectacular food. We did go and have a look at the beach - actual sand this time but were not up for much more. The mountain behind the beach umbrella’s is what we climbed!! Got our ride to Trapani where we are spending four nights. The accommodation here is a bit of a let down after what we had in Scopello but….Baca lagi

    Trapini Day 2

    7 September 2024, Itali ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

    First port of call today was the town of Erice. It is on top of a standalone mountain at the edge of Trapani - 751m high. Fortunately there is a cable car to get up there. Lots of stone streets that are narrow and winding. We climbed the bell tower, found the fortress, had a bite of lunch at a tiny restaurant and wandered the streets. There were a number of museums with different offerings - one had an Andy Warhole display which was unexpected. We also found an amazing church. Because we are walking Sicily we walked from the cable car down to the bottom of the mountain (it was not a hill) . And treated ourselves with lemon granita - it has become a favourite. Then resting the feet for a bit before heading out for a Sicilian dinner - special twisty pasta with some great sauces (and some good wine 🍷)Baca lagi

    Trapani Day 3

    8 September 2024, Itali ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

    Today we went to island of Levanzo. A ferry trip that took you us to two of the small mountainous Aegadian islands off the coast of Sicily. Levanzo is basically an enormous rock and we decided that today we would do a revised walk - so we took our time wandering around the flat part of the island worrying that looked like any minute there was going to be a rock fall on us. Then we found a beautiful beach where we braved the stones and had a swim. It was refreshing but not too much so.. Floated around for some time. The hardest part was getting out - I am such a princess when it comes to rocks under foot with no shoes 👸. I have decided that there is one bonus to the stones and that is no sand stuck everywhere. So walked back to the dock at Spiaggia Di Cala Dogana and found a very cute cafe for a bite to eat and a glass of wine. Fish of the day looked too good to ignore. Ferry back and then walked around the “old town” off Trapani which is very quaint with not so quaint tourist ships. And tea back in the motel.Baca lagi

    Trapini Day 4

    A well earned sleep in today and off to Favignana - the bigger of the two offshore islands. It did not have the charm of Levanzo, but we went for a wander and had a look around and found some nice bits. Did also try to find a beach but both that we found, while being sand, swimming was prohibited. Again like much of the region, very steep hills that are quite barren. There was one we supposed to climb (the one with the fortress on it) but we passed. The trip back was interesting! Anne tells me this is called choppy - worth a small video. Then off to the find the museum - which turned out to be a library you could not get into. Would have been interesting as it has a amphora with wine from the 12thC in it. Probably past its use by date?? Then had a look at the foreshore and nearly got blown away - but pretty. And finished the day with dinner in the old town. The weather today has been a bit cooler and less humid which is pleasant.Baca lagi

    Segesta and Palermo

    We were picked up and taken to Segesta - the ruins of an ancient settlement that goes back BC. It has been built and rebuilt following wars and two main parts remain standing - a Doric temple and a Theatre. This is a live archeological site and more is being found about its history. Then off to Palermo. Had lunch under an enormous Moreton Bay Fig (??) which was introduced from Australia in 1845. Then off to the Palazzo Abatellis, a palace housing an art museum with woodwork and Renaissance art, most around 15thC. A couple of the pieces were discovered at flea markets and saved. It was really well set out in a great building - well worth the effort. Then Ian packed his bag and headed out to the airport for the start of his journey home. Anne and i headed off to the contemporary art museum which, compared to the one earlier was a bit if a dissapointment. Then we went for a look at the old town of Palermo. Found a man playing a harp in one of the Piazza’s - just beautiful, and there were a couple of weddings groups having their photos. Had dinner people watching with a glass of wine in hand - a very pleasant way to end our time in Sicily.Baca lagi

    Lets go to Paris!

    An early morning ☹️ and felt like we spent the day in airports - first Palermo, then Milan and our final destination Paris. I had not been to Charles de Gaulle before but it was so clean - i am presuming the Olympics cleaned up more than just the Seine. I treated myself to some duty free sun glasses as a treat on the way through Milan 😎. After getting a bit lost at our Metro station we finally found Andrea! Paris 40 years on! Went to our apartment and did a bit of reminiscing over a glass of bubbles on our balcony. Our apartment is amazing, quirky and well located in a really old building. I am going to have to be careful I don’t hit my head on the roof! Ended up at a very cute little restaurant for dinner where i finally got to have my French Onion soup.Baca lagi

    Paris Day 2

    12 September 2024, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

    A day of very mixed weather - rain, hail and sunshine! We went for a bit of a wander down the streets of Paris - I believe that we are on the border of the first arrondissement, then to St Eustache’s Church (the one you can see from our balcony) before heading to the Georges Pompidou centre for their exhibitions - including a surrealist one. I do enjoy some art but say that the surrealist movement does not do much for me - but i did see some that I know such as Salvatore Dali and Rene Magritte. Shall we say an education 😊.
    Then stopped for lunch as the worst of the hail hit - and finished with a highlight of a flambé Crepes Suzette! We then tested out the metro and made our way to the island in the Seine but the queues for Saint Chapelle were soooo long. So not today. Headed around the corner to Notre Dame - it is supposed to be finished by December this year but I think that they are being a little optimistic. After a quick freshen up at our very cute apartment we headed to the black cat - Cafe Le Chat Noir for a drink before a memorable night at the Moulin Rouge. Despite being crammed in like sardines, the food was good, and the show exceptional. There was less Can Can than i expected - the show is more in the style of Cirque du Soleil. Very enjoyable evening.    Baca lagi
