"All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking" ... apparently Nietzsche said that. Well, no great ideas yet I'm afraid. But after all I've only just started out ;)

We're one week into the new year and today I'm gonna hike the first section of the Thames Path which is one of the UK National Trails. Bit tired but excited to get going.Read more

  • Starting at the beginning.... or not?

    January 8, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

The Thames Path leads 180 miles all the way from the Thames Barrier to the source of the river. Or the other way round, depending on preference. I'll start at the barrier, simply because it's a convenient place to start since I'll be doing this not in one go but in sections.

Not sure how many sections or how long this will take. But one thing is certain... this is the beginning :)

  • Section 1 - From the Thames Barrier

    January 8, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

The first section would end up being 15km long and take about 4 hours. I expected dull long stretches of buildings to be honest.

Instead the path went from the industrial area right at the start through yes, residential, areas right to major tourist attractions. And it did so with plenty of charming buildings, pubs and alleys in between.

Actually spend quite some time snapping away at my surroundings rather than making miles. It's nice not to be in a rush.

  • Section1 - To the Tower of London

    January 8, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

It's rather grey today and with a good measure of drizzle and few sunny spells. Still the walking is invigorating as is the breakfast and the next surprise is just around the corner.

I saw a sign for Hampton Court today with 34 miles yet to go. That means at least two or three sections that I can easily do from home. One step at a time though.... one step at a time...Read more

  • Section 2 - From the Tower of London...

    January 14, 2017 in England ⋅ 🌧 3 °C

Hello again! Another weekend - another bit of walking. It's an afternoon walk today. I was out doing a Parkrun this morning and am glad I did because I SMASHED IT, yeah!

Still, the roughly 15km back home from the Tower should be doable, I think. After all, I'm slackpacking again, taking the tube to my starting point and even wearing jeans and sneakers. All not very hiker-like 😉 ... rain jacket though at least .... 😀Read more

  • Section 2 - To Putney Bridge

    January 14, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

Three hours later and I'm having PIZZA! Yes! Celebrations are in order (aren't they always 😉).

It was another fantastic walk through London! Great views from the north bank of the river and even the sun came out. I was maybe walking a tad fast and started feeling it towards the end. However just made it to Putney with the last of the light.

Now all that's left to do is pizza and beer and there is definitely no daylight needed for that! Until next time 😀

  • Section 3 - To Kew Bridge

    June 4, 2017 in England ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Just around 2 hours in total to walk to Kew.... so why not carry on? Well you see it was almost lunch time and the sign for the Kew Village market was all it took to remove the last little bit of resistance. So I spent some time in Kew itself where it seemed the French had arrived.... in force... well at least with a merry band of musicians. So I even had some entertainment looking into the culinary delights of the market. Easy section... but still very nice.Read more
