    Uchiko, a charming and traditional town

    Taking a ferry is not the cheapest way to travel but it’s easy and pleasant. Cyclists are the last ones to board: ferry staff take really good care of bicycles (use of blankets, ropes and big wheel chocks :)
    Our plan was to ride to Uchiko until I fell while walking and sprained my ankle :(
    Sooo, we took a train and checked in at Uchikobare Guesthouse, a beautiful traditional Japanese house in the Historic District Preservation Zone.
    Wealthy merchants in Uchiko made a fortune in the production of vegetable wax which is made from the berries of the sumac tree. It was exported and used to make candles, soap or polish for woodwork.
