Uchiko, a charming and traditional town

Taking a ferry is not the cheapest way to travel but it’s easy and pleasant. Cyclists are the last ones to board: ferry staff take really good care of bicycles (use of blankets, ropes and big wheel chocks :)
Our plan was to ride to Uchiko until I fell while walking and sprained my ankle :(
Sooo, we took a train and checked in at Uchikobare Guesthouse, a beautiful traditional Japanese house in the Historic District Preservation Zone.
Wealthy merchants in Uchiko made a fortune in the production of vegetable wax which is made from the berries of the sumac tree. It was exported and used to make candles, soap or polish for woodwork.Read more
