  • Farewell!

    6. marts 2019, England ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

So the time has finally arrived to say farewell to the rain and wind of the UK! After spending a large proportion of the day on British public transport I have to say that Europe do it a whole lot better! Bring on the Ü-Bahn and trams! I remembered my toothbrush but forgot my railcard so I had to get a new ticket -.- Blunders aside I'm feeling pretty excited and ready to go! Krakow, I'm coming to get you!Læs mere

  • Krakow Jewish Quarter

    7. marts 2019, Polen ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

An interesting tour around Krakow's Jewish Quarter this morning, visiting a working synagogue amongst various interesting buildings and areas. Learnt a lot about old and modern Jewish culture. With Poland having the second biggest Jewish community in the world (after the USA) before 1939 to just 450ish today it really made me appreciate the scale of the Nazi regime's effect on the city.Læs mere

  • The Holocaust in Krakow and Schlinder

    7. marts 2019, Polen ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

After my tour of the Jewish Quarter this morning I visited Schlinders factory and the memorial to those transported from the ghetto here. The Krakow Jewish ghetto existed from 1941 to 1943 with 8 transportations in this time. Most of the transportations went immediately took death camps, with only one to Auschwitz. I believe the chair memorial is very poignant, with 68 chairs representing the 68,000 jews that lived in the city before the war.

The Schlinders factory museum was an interesting visit, giving a little more insight into the story of what happened here. Schlinder is a very controversial figure; some call him a hero for saving an estimated 1,200 lives, others say he made a lot of money from Jewish slave labour. I personally believe his efforts to save so many should be remembered as an example of humanity in the darkest times.

  • Auschwitz-Birkenau

    8. marts 2019, Polen ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

Words cannot describe what I have seen today. I have studied the Holocaust for over 10 years, visited various museums, watched countless documentaries, read too many books to count, seen hundreds of photographs and spoken to survivors. But nothing can prepare you for this.Læs mere

  • Wieliczka Salt Mine

    8. marts 2019, Polen ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

Interesting afternoon tour of the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Saw some incredible statues, artwork and a whole chapel made entirely of salt. Off to Hard Rock Cafe for some dinner before an early night!

  • A cheeky bit of German sausage...

    9. marts 2019, Tyskland ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

Hello Berlin! Good flight with one hell of a lot of turbulence and a landing that was so rough it would feature in the "hardcore" category on pornhub. It was carnage. Women screaming, babies rolling down the aisle alongside bottles of duty free Smirnoff, people being taken out by oxygen masks. We lost at least two cabin crew under rogue trolleys.

Okay so it wasn't that bad but it was pretty bumpy...

Anyway I managed a cheeky airport Currywurst and checked out one of those "Hop On, Hop Off" buses to get my bearings (I promise I'm not a typical British tourist... Honest...)

  • Sachsenhausen

    10. marts 2019, Tyskland ⋅ 🌧 6 °C

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

  • Empty shelves...

    11. marts 2019, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

One of the most powerful monuments I have seen. A hole in the ground with empty bookshelves and a plaque with the below quote from Heinrich Heine.
"Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man am Ende auch Menschen"
"Where they burn books, they will in the end also burn people."

Located at Bebelplatz, where book burning took place in May 1933.

****Second photo taken from Google as it was too dark to get a good photo of the shelves.****

  • Museums and Monuments

    11. marts 2019, Tyskland ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

Fascinating tour this morning with the lovely Karin Holl focusing on life in Berlin during the Second World War but with some interesting stops with other historical prominence. Visited the Checkpoint Charlie museum in the afternoon and finished the day with a bit of book shopping! Absolutely exhausted but a brilliant way to end my time in Berlin.Læs mere

  • Dachau

    14. marts 2019, Tyskland ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

Another insight into humanities darkest hour. A reminder that the Nazi's were not the first to commit atrocities like the Holocaust and certainly weren't the last.

Late lunch of Currywurst after exploring Marinenplatz now time for a nap I think!Læs mere
