  • Munich

    May 22, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌩️ 21 °C

So seamless change in Munich where we spent a happy holiday in 2010. This train takes me to Venice. From the last journey business folk from stuttgart very quiet to this tourist train full of americans bit of a contrast.Read more

  • Venice

    May 23, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Fantastic day walked 4 and half miles around Venice. Saw some lovely art, have eaten tasty food, enjoyed a gondola ride. All in the company of my friend Elaine.

  • Leaving Venice

    May 28, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

So just some tips about Venice stays. Lovely to stay on the island of Murano but vaporetto (waterbus) is €25 per day pass to get across to Venice. Before you say weekly ticket factor in strike day and limited service due to a regatta which meant I had to carry my luggage across from a distant vaporetto stop 40 mins against the tourist tide in 30 degree temp. Another trip I will stay in Venice mainland.
All fine though now on train to Munich.

  • Fun night in Munich

    May 28, 2023 in Germany ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

So on my train trip today I got chatting to some young people. A young interrailing Canadian Delaney was staying in the hostel opposite my hotel so I treated her to dinner. Interesting chat, good food. Thats what interrail is about these chance encounters.Read more

  • Berlin

    June 1, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

So sat by the river Spree in East Berlin lots of development since I was last here about 10 years ago. Left Elaine ( again) this time with her son who lives here. Happy memories of past holidays. Wandered along the East Side gallery now deciding where to eat. Getting used to the public transport very clean and on time.Read more

  • Adlershof

    June 8, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

So in the spirit of exploration on the way to the airport to meet Joyce (bus, tram, train) I got off to change at Adlershof marketplace and walked to the station. Pleasant little town, walking past a florists (there are loads here) I saw some dresses outside (cotton). It's 30 degrees now so I pop in and buy 1 €15 great for changing at the lake. I think. (Although the nudists are the little beach this morning weren't bothered if they caught a glimpse of me changing. ) First glimpse of a naked chap I have had in a long time. Anyhow while waiting at the airport I pop in the ladies and try the dress on. The waist is unforgiving fits but not an easy on/off never mind. I swim every day so getting the change down to a fine art anyway.Read more

So the first birthday I ever had on my own. It was good. Swam, worked, had cake. The weekend was so fun, Joyce and I had celebrated. I have been so lucky this trip to spend time with friends in fabulous places. Yes that is the dress I bought in the chemists.Read more

  • Kopenick palace

    June 16, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

So decided to go local now the weather has broken and walk to Kopenick (the nearby town) and visit the palace. It's 8km mainly along the forest road. Fine when I set off but get caught in a long shower and despite waterproof jacket I was drenched on arrival. They were obviously setting up for an event and the palace doors were firmly shut. Fed up I sit on a bench with my water. Then I noticed the door open, taking my chance I go in yes it's open. No surprise I am the only visitor. Quite interesting. Now in a nearby cafe checking buses back.Read more

  • Leaving Muggelheim

    June 25, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

So last day in Muggelheim so sad. Still incredibly hot found another lake a couple of miles away. Klein Muggelsee. Just for boats. Still another week of the trip left, heading for Koln in the morning. A few work problems that spoilt the mood otherwise all good. I would say to anyone thinking of doing this be flexible. I was heading back to the station in Dresden to get back here, I had a seat reservation and just thought I will stay. I walked into a decent looking hotel and asked for a room and stayed an extra day. I hadn't realised I could be that spontaneous.Read more

  • Cologne

    June 26, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

So next place Koeln. Beautiful cathedral and modern architecture which would fit into the south bank. I liked both, a modern working city and the old town. Big contrast to Dresden. A definite west east split.Read more
