    Home to Porto

    May 2, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

    A long day.

Smooth rail journey to Manchester airport. Slightly delayed flight to Lisbon. Then we got bumped off an over booked connecting flight to Porto, booked onto the next which in turn was delayed.

Metro into Porto. Nice little hotel - Vivacity who suggested a vegetarian buffet restaurant nearby. Meal for two with a bottle of nice green wine was just over 30 euros.

    May 4, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Cool until 9:30, warm while climbing Alto de Portela Grande. A cooling breeze while descending. Bagged places in a private hostel early on. Very hot after that so no reason not to sit in the shade and sip a cold beer.

Aiming for a peregrino menu tonight at the local bar.

  • Tui (Spain)

    May 5, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Communal self-service breakfast requiring cooperation between different nations.

Cool start but by 9:30 am it was hot.

Last stop in Portugal was Valenca - touristy, so we carried our tired bodies over the river to Tui in Spain. Super hostel and location.Read more

  • O Porriño, Spain

    May 7, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Stone buildings on stilts are grain stores - quite common in the area even in modern homes.

Bread is delivered like the post.

Constant battle between two competing routes into o Porrino which starts by these paintings. Yellow arrows blacked out and then repainted.

Striking fertility statue in a children's playground.

  • Redondela

    May 7, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After a broken night's sleep we left early, just after 7am while it was still dark.

The day instantly picked up when we found that a lovely panaderia was already serving breakfast.

Second breakfast at Mos - cafe part of a museum with great views.

We frequently bump into fellow peregrino - from Sweden, Italy and Ireland.

Nice to have a private room for n a pension tonight.

  • Pontevedra

    May 8, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Last of the hot days? National icon, the Horreos (grain store on stilts), appears everywhere.

    Roman bridge at Arcade.

Pleasant walking along the Tomeza river.
Post box in Pontevedra (it must be someone's job to polish it).

Looking down from the cupola to the church in the Sanctuary of the Virgin Pilgrim.

  • Caldas de Reis

    May 9, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

A pleasantly cooler day and only gentle climbing.

Breakfast in hotel comprised coffee and pastries from local panaderia plus muesli in cups. Cereal so important to a good start.

Pontevedra very attractive city, especially in the ancient quarter.

Only two days after this stage to Santiago and pilgrims feeling a bit weary.

Caldas de Reis was initially unpromising when we arrived during the siesta but a lovely host, nice cafe and a lively restaurant corrected our website first impressions.

  • Padron

    May 10, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Last of the hot and dry days?

Mausoleum en route is like a left corpse facility.

Padron quite industrial except for one section of river plus promenade and a small old town. Hotel tucked away and quiet.

The main church contains many interesting icons, not the least St Iago killing some Muslims and pictures of lost souls burning in hell.

One longish day of walking left to santiago.

  • Santiago de Compostela

    May 11, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Longest day's walk but it didn't feel bad, knowing it is the last day walking with a heavy pack. Graveyard along the way festooned with flowers.

Santiago cathedral displaying opulence and a well stocked gift shop.

Interesting individual shops in the old quarter. Staying in a spacious and comfortable apartment.
