    Tongue, Sutherland

    July 28 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Lumpy ferry to mainland Scotland plus heavy rain, which soon abated.

Drive across the top to Durness and Balnakiel Estate where Cocoa Mountain and craft shops are located. This is a former military establishment, abandoned and then turned into craft workshops and accommodation.

Views on the return drive to Tongue where we are camped. The heatwave continues- over 20 C in the evening.Read more

    Day in Kirkwall

    July 27 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Sad to leave our perfect camping spot on Jacqui‘s hillside ruined mill.

Turning up early at the quay allowed us to be put on an earlier ferry to mainland Orkney. The knock on effect was to allow us to bag the last pitch at the Pickaquoy campsite in Kirkwall.

Cleansing of garments and bodies were completed in an untypical Orkney heatwave.Read more

All day working in the Finds table. Spotted this worked bone (some kind of needle?).

Pint of Scapa Flow at the Taversoe - a pub and restaurant with a fabulous view.

    Orkney and Rousay

    July 24 in the United Kingdom ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Mural celebrating the making of granite city in Aberdeen. Plenty of rain in the morning for the flight to Kirkwall.

Then a sunny afternoon and the little ferry to Rousay.

Walked along the coast to Julia’s van an a welcome cup of tea from Jacqui Marwick, postmaster and owner of the land where the van rests.Read more

By train to the well-named Granite City.

Staying in the grand and fairly central youth hostel. £31 a night for a private room.

    A heatwave is in progress.

Tree roots growing between granite sets.

More NCR1 - excellent route which I stayed on for 50 miles. Coffee in Craster and crab sandwich lunch in pretty Alnmouth.

Route goes through several ancient gates.

Inland via Ellington site of former deep coal mine whose tunnels went 7 miles out to sea. The only remains are a social club and this memorial to former workers.Read more

    July 14 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Strong sunshine but cool air makes for sunburn that isn’t noticed until later, I found.

Now largely following NCR1 which hugs the coast, using tracks, bridleways and farm roads.

Eyemouth for coffee and Berwick on Tweed for picnic lunch. Arrived in Belford after 53 miles of rougher riding. Arts festival just finishing with a good steel band.Read more

    More Dunbar

    July 13 in the United Kingdom ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Lifeboat day in Dunbar. Polished pipe band and procession.

Found a dead body and a man with a head injury on the beach. However to my relief they were acting in a film.

Tour of museums during a downpour.

    Memory stones at the campsite.
