    First night in prison

    Trains from Huddersfield to Manchester then to Liverpool South Park. Reaching John Lennon airport is perfectly doable by public transport.

    Flight to Cork then a quick transfer to Cobh to catch a little ferry to Spike Island.

    There are abandoned 19th C prison blocks within the walls of the old fort but thankfully our accommodation is fairly new - on top of an old block.

  • Digging for treasure

    A jolly day working alongside students from university college Cork and the USA excavating prisoner graves. My job - wet sieving. My finds were small - coffin nails and bits of coffin.

    Two lunchtime successes: yesterday in Cork a health food shop with vegetarian cafe. Today a seafront restaurant which served great chowder and mussels.Read more

    Last evening in Spike Island : taking a collective trip round the moat and to visit one of the naval guns guarding the entrance to Cork Harbour.

    Other shots: finding the grave cut for a burial and an evening stroll along the river Nore in Kilkenny.Read more
