A tight squeeze on the train to Leeds because of industrial action - fewer trains running than normal.

Smooth trip to the airport with the bonus of meeting Emily Chappell on the way (really enjoyed her book about being a cycke courier in London ).

Flight slightly delayed and I had under- planned my route across Hamburg so it took longer to get tickets, find platforms etc.

Delighted to see Kathrin again, my penfriend of 46 years, and to meet her "prince": Steffen.Read more

Henstedt-Ulzburg to Groningen

Beautiful start to the day, sunny and hot. Had time for a wander before my first of 4 trains. Many cigarette dispensers on residential roads, and smoking is allowed on station platforms.

Last stop Leer, quite pretty - see bronze statue outside Tea Museum. Bus to Groningen - even takes bikes!

Interesting B&B. My room has murals, oriental wall hanging, healing crystals, statue of Buddha and various poems. A restful night's sleep is assured.
Tea at Indonesian cafe.

Quickest way to commit suicide here is to step onto a cycle lane without looking. Otherwise it's great to watch ballet on two wheels.Read more

Walking to Assen on acorns

1st night spent at a Vrienden op der Fiets bed and breakfast. Chatting with hosts is part of the charm. This house had a hippy feel.

Terrible trouble with my right eye in the morning : vision blurred though not painful. Worked out by midday that I hadn't removed a contact lens the night before and I now had two lenses in one eye. Quickly rectified.

Initially followed my nose - a direct but uninteresting route. Latterly followed the knoppunt network - much more scenic but longer.

Oak trees for shelter much of the way, hence walking on acorns. No elevenses and lunch was at the Pitstop cafe in Tynaarlo.

Thai evening meal in centre of Assen - very quiet after Groningen.Read more

After a comfortable night in a top floor double bedroom and breakfast with Lily my host I walked to Assen station.

Train to Hoogeveen, elevenses then off following knoppunt nodes to Meppel. Dry and mostly warm.

On a pilgrim route for a short way. Much of the distance on block paved roads - tiring for the feet. Refreshments at an unmanned egg dispensing shop.

And home again

See photo of a "typical" Dutch breakfast. I enjoy these but do miss pots of tea and bowls of muesli.

Smooth train journey to Schipol airport, lunch bought and microwaved at the on site supermarket before proceeding through security.

The only real problem was a 1.75 hour delay to the return flight. Lovely to see Yorkshire hills again!Read more
