  • Up the East coast

    September 29, 2016 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Wind and rain in biblical proportions so decided an anti clockwise route up the East Coast would be favourable.

Aimed for Dunbeath on the strength of a good campsite review which was sound. Heated toilets and showers and a good location for £9.50 night.

Currently enjoying tea at the Bay Owl restaurant.

    335 driving miles today.

  • Tongue!

    September 30, 2016 in Scotland ⋅ 🌙 5 °C

Wind blown at Dunnet head, but with occasional views of Hoy. Interesting museum at Strathnaven, with an exhibition on the clearances made by the local primary school. Arrival at Tongue, so pretty I stayed at the independent hostel there and went for a ride round the loch and up the coast. John Lennon and Yoko Ono crashed their car near here in 1969, apparently.Read more

  • Second day in Tongue

    October 1, 2016 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Ice on van this morning. Good job I brought my summer sleeping bag!

Decided to stay in Tongue a second day and go walking. Borrowed a guide to a walk up Ben Loyal and set off. Only saw one other person, a German woman called Yvonne, who was on the same walk and we mutually agreed that it would be safer to stick together.

Yvonne was good company, loves Scotland, and is very eligible as she owns a brewery and a pub.

Glad to return in one piece, and to enjoy a cup of tea back at the hostel. Tonight we have the company of 22 motorcyclists (would have been 23 but one crashed yesterday).

Beautiful sunset in this great location.

  • Tongue - again (last night )

    October 2, 2016 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Given perfect still conditions, I decided to cycle to Durness - for the exercise, the scenery on the way and hope of a pleasant coffee or lunch stop.

Achieved the first two - great to appreciate the views at cycling pace, particularly of Loch Erribol. And it was a demanding 28 miles on the out leg, taking 2:40 of constant cycling. Refreshments were very limited in Durness with zilch in between. Turning to return I realised I'd had a tail wind on the way out, so more effort was required to make progress returning the same way.

Only one dwelling en route, belonging to a ceramicist - entrance decorated with ceramics and dear skulls.

  • Tongue to Ullapool

    October 3, 2016 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

A day driving planned, aiming at Ullapool. I had been warned that progress can be slow due to the need to keep stopping to admire the scenery and read the information boards on the geology of the area.

First stop Snoo cave, coffee at Cocoa Heaven, then a long desolate stretch before the next stop at Inverloch and it's famous pie shop (make mine a salmon and dill).

The afternoon was taken up driving a minor road round the coast - more challenging than driving round a multi storey car park with stone walls on the left and drops into lochs on the right.

Final pic is of Ullapool which I used to think was far north, but I'd just spent a day driving south to reach.

  • Ullapool to Peebles

    October 4, 2016 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

A surprising number of campers were up to witness an impressive sunrise at 7am. As arranged the previous night I parked up on the shore front by the youth hostel to use their facilities and enjoy breakfast opposite the ferry terminal.

A long trek to Inverness, Perth and Edinburgh getting back to civilisation and traffic.

Finally reaching a much quieter Peebles and camping at Glentress mountain bike centre. Having supper with Jonny and Jenni tonight who are staying at Peebles Hydro hotel - how the other half live...

  • End of trip

    October 5, 2016 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Did the blue run (for riders in good health with basic mountain biking skills) last night and again this morning. Much scarier at night in fading light and no one around.

Expecting a straightforward drive home of C. 5 hours.Read more
