  • Lobster Kettle

    September 4, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Their door handle seemed broken and we couldn't get in. Weird. We were tight on time because we left a little late and a few other unexpected delays on the road so we are just going to go with plan B to save time.

This place would have had a really nice view though!

  • The Louisbourger Chip Wagon

    September 4, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Plan B? Food truck! I had the clams and fries and Matt had the shrimp and fries. They were decent. The cold drink hit the spot though. It was quite hot today and all our drinks in the car were warm.

  • Royal Battery Trail

    September 4, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

So... not really much to see. It's a few piles of rocks.

It's a place where there once was a battery, that failed. Not sure what else to say about it. There's some info on the signs I took photos of if you're interested.Read more

  • Fortress of Louisbourg Nat'l Hist. Site

    September 4, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

A National Historic Site, named after King Louis XIV of France, it was one of the most extensive (and expensive) European fortifications constructed in North America. It was unfortunately destroyed by the British but in the 60s and 70s it was partially rebuilt using the original stone.Read more

  • Fortune Star Chinese Restaurant

    September 4, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Long day.. time for dinner and there isn't much to choose from in Sydney, Nova Scotia. At least that's where we thought we were. According to the photos I took we seem to be somewhere between Vegas and London? Anyway, we found some Chinese takeout in between the two and took it to our next Airbnb.Read more

  • Airbnb #2 - The Hummingbird Suite

    September 4, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We pulled in and were immediately greeted with big hugs from our host. Super friendly. We stayed in their walkout basement and it was very spacious. She stocked our little kitchen with lots of treats and drinks including a few cold beers which went down nice with dinner! The house is out in the country and so it was so peaceful to hear nothing but nature outside and to see so many stars at night.

This morning we snack on breakfast as we jet out the door. Today we will continue north and hope to hop on a ferry to Cape Breton Island to drive the Cabot Trail. The ferry has been closed for quite some time for repairs, however from we understand from the internet the ferry was set to return this week. If it's not, we will need to drive around. It'll take a bit linger but not the end of the world.

  • Englishtown Ferry

    September 5, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

No luck with the ferry. We will drive around. The ferry wound have taken us to that little peninsula you see in photo 3. That is the Sainte-Anne / Port Dauphin National Historic Site.

  • Middle Head Hiking Trail part 2

    September 5, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

More pictures from our hike. There were a LOT of squirrels. I'm pretty sure some were throwing pine cones at me from the trees. Others were right on the trail and they blend into the ground so well I almost stepped on one. Not sure who was more startled, me or the squirrel!Read more

  • Bean Barn Cafe

    September 5, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Parks Canada has partnered with a few cafes where you can order a picnic lunch box to go so you can have lunch somewhere out in the park with a view. You can also buy a picnic blanket or upgrade the box to a picnic basket for a fee. We opted for just the box because we will eventually have to fly home and won't be able to keep all that extra stuff anyway.Read more

  • Black Brook Cove Beach

    September 5, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We found a nice little beach with picnic tables to have our Parks Canada Perfect Picnic lunch.
Lobster sandwiches, apples, oat squares, cinnamon buns and bottled water. It was great! I recommend doing this if you're ever out in this area.Read more

  • The Lone Shieling Trail

    September 5, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Dominated by 350 year old sugar maple trees, this area is one of the largest old growth forests in the Maritimes. One of the most protected areas of the park, access is restricted to this short trail. A replica of a Scottish crofter's hut is found at the beginning of the trail.

The mosquitoes were jerks here. We powered in and out of here really fast and didn't stop much for photos.

  • Whale Interpretive Centre

    September 5, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

A little spot for a quick break from the car. We learned about different types of whales, and about the importance of whale conservation to save the species after past whaling practices have significantly depleted their population.Read more

  • St Peter's Church

    September 5, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We decided to explore Cheticamp a bit to kill some time before dinner since we weren't starving after the picnic we had earlier. We came upon this neat looking Church which seemed incredibly big for such a small town. We stopped to take a photo and a local lady on the street stopped and asked if I had been inside. She said the doors are open all day so we should really go in and take a look. We are quite glad we did. I'm still blown away by the size of this church for a small town. It's something you'd expect in a big city. Thete was even a bunch of additional seating on the sides of the 2nd floor.Read more

  • Wabo's Pizza

    September 5, 2018 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Pizza for dinner tonight! Pizza right on the waterfront, actually! Trying to go with more local choices, we were torn between the Seafood Pizza and the Donair Pizza. We ordered a smaller one of each so we could try both. Both were really good although the Donair Pizza could have had a bit more meat on it and the Seafood pizza was a little bit on the wet aide making it more of a fork and knife pizza. The crust was also really good.
After eating, we walked the boardwalk outside a little bit before heading to our Airbnb for the evening.

Back on the road to finish off the Cabot Trail!
