    Toulouse, capital of France’s southern Occitanie region, is bisected by the Garonne River and sits near the Spanish border. It’s known as La Ville Rose (‘The Pink City’) due to the terra-cotta bricks used in many of its buildings. Its 17th-century Canal du Midi links the Garonne to the Mediterranean Sea, and can be traveled by boat, bike or on foot.
    Toulouse is almost 2,200 years old and was founded by the Romans

    Because the Garonne Valley was such a major point for trade between both seas (the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean) and the mountain range between France and Spain, the Pyrenees, a city had to be founded there, and that is why the Romans came up with Tolosa in the 2nd century BC.
    The development of violet cultivation in Toulouse in the 19th century made it an emblem of the city and earned it the nickname "city of violets ".
