    Day 31 - Chichester to Poole

    Today was one of our shortest drive days, as we were scheduled to catch up with our friends Sue and Jos in Poole. The plan was to arrive in the morning and spend a nice relaxing day before hopping on the ferry to France tomorrow.

    Poole is a coastal town and seaport in the south of England. It is known for its natural harbour, which is the largest in Europe, and for its sandy beaches. Poole is a popular tourist destination, with attractions such as Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island, and the Lighthouse arts centre. The town also has a rich history, dating back to the Iron Age, and has been an important port since the Middle Ages. So in the afternoon, we had a lovely walk around the lake at Poole Park Lake, the harbour and old town.

    This is the last day of the UK leg of our trip. Tomorrow, it will all change as we hit the European continent for the first time.    Weiterlesen

    Day 32 - Poole to Paris

    Today was another transport stage, that included a ferry. It was convenient for us to get the ferry from Poole to Cherbourg in France, so we didn't need to drive to Folkestone to cross the channel. We arrived at the ferry terminal in Poole just before 7.30 am and were soon sitting in a queue to board. However, we were quickly on board, and the ferry left on time at 8.30 am. We found some recliners to sit on and settled in for our five hour cruise.

    The cruise was very smooth, and we arrived in Cherbourg on time. Having arrived in France, we also lost one hour, and it was after 3.00 pm before we left Cherbourg for Paris. I did the first driving stint and had to adjust to driving on the other side of the road. We had 350 kilometres to cover to get to Paris. With no time to waste, we went on the fastest route to Paris, which included some tolls. As we approached Paris, we could see the Eiffel Tower, and there was no mistaking that we had made it to Paris. After parking our car, it was 8.00 pm - a long day on the road.    Weiterlesen

    Arc de Triomphe

    The Arc de Triomphe is a famous monument in Paris, France. It stands at the western end of the Champs-Élysées and was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to honor his victories. The arch is 50 meters tall and 45 meters wide, making it one of the largest triumphal arches in the world. At the base of the arch is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which honors the soldiers who died in World War I. Visitors can climb to the top of the arch for a stunning view of the city.Weiterlesen

    Notre Dame Cathedral

    Notre-Dame Cathedral is a medieval Catholic cathedral in Paris, France. The cathedral is considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. It was completed in the 14th century and has been a major landmark in Paris ever since. In 2019, the cathedral suffered a devastating fire, causing significant damage to the structure. Efforts are currently underway to restore the cathedral to its former glory.Weiterlesen

    Day 33 - Paris sightseeing

    Today we had the opportunity for some sightseeing in Paris. After finding a patisserie to get some breakfast, we wandered to the Museo de Lourve, along to the Place de la Concorde and up the Champs-Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe. There was quite a bit of set-up on the Champs-Élysées in preparation for the finale of the Tour de France on Sunday.

    We climbed up the Arc de Triomphe to see a scenic view of Paris. It provides a 360 degrees perspective of Paris, and you get an excellent understanding of the architecture and history. You also get a good look at how the traffic flows around the base of the Arc de Triomphe and how the drivers enter and exit the twelve roads that lead into the roundabout. I could watch it all day.

    We then jumped on the Metro to get back to our hotel. After all the walking, we were tired and rested for a few hours. On heading out to dinner, we passed the Notre Dame Cathedral, which is still under repair after the 2019 fire.

    At the end of the day, l had completed 23,500 steps and was ready for a good steep.    Weiterlesen

    Eiffel Tower

    The Eiffel Tower is a wrought-iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It was named after Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. The tower was completed in 1889, and it was the tallest man-myade structure in the world at the time. It is now one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world and attracts millions of visitors each year.

    The tower stands at a height of 324 meters (1,063 feet) and consists of three levels, each of which offers stunning views of the city. The first level is 57 meters (187 feet) above the ground, the second level is 115 meters (377 feet) above the ground, and the third level is 276 meters (905 feet) above the ground.    Weiterlesen

    Panthéon

    The Panthéon is a building in the Latin Quarter in Paris. It was originally built as a church dedicated to St. Genevieve and to house the reliquary châsse containing her relics but, after many changes, now functions as a secular mausoleum containing the remains of distinguished French citizens. It is an early example of neo-classicism, with a façade modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, surmounted by a dome that owes some of its character to Bramante's Tempietto.Weiterlesen

    Day 34 - More Paris sightseeing

    On our second day of sightseeing in Paris, we couldn't leave without going to the Eiffel Tower. I pre-purchased our tickets to get to the second level, which reduced our waiting time. Unfortunately, all the tickets for the top level had been sold, but the view from to second is still spectacular nevertheless.

    This is my fourth visit to the Eiffel Tower, and I am always amazed at the size of the tower. Given that the original plan was to take it down after the World Fair, much effort went into constructing a temporary structure. It is a good thing that they change their mind and that the tower is still around for everyone to enjoy.

    We then walked up and had a look at the Trocadéro. The Trocadéro is known for its beautiful architecture and stunning views of the Eiffel Tower. The area is particularly renowned for the Palais de Chaillot, which contains the Théâtre National de Chaillot, the Musée de l'Homme and the Musée National de la Marine. From the Trocadéro, we travelled in the Metro back to our hotel for a rest. In the afternoon, we took a stroll to have a look at the Pantheon.
