    Day 24 - Silverstone to Leeds

    The English Cricket team were too good in the third Ashes Test at Headingley, winning within four days. So, our planned day at the cricket did not go ahead. Nevertheless, we still travelled to Leeds as planned. As we weren’t in a hurry, we stopped over in Northampton for some breakfast.

    After breakfast, we headed east through Boston to Skegness, a seaside town known for its sandy beaches, amusement parks, and traditional fish and chips. We had a walk along the beach and enjoyed a light lunch. From Skegness, we drove straight to Leeds.

    We have a small apartment in need this evening. It is a pleasant change from our salubrious digs at Silverstone. We will be able to cook our own dinner and have some clothes washing done. Luxury!    En savoir plus

    Day 25 - Leeds to Coventry

    It felt like we had been driving in circles after arriving in Coventry, only 50 kilometres from where we started our day yesterday. However, we have done almost 700 kilometres in the last two days.

    Today’s drive was much nicer than yesterday's. After departing Leeds, we drove through the Peak District National Park, an area of 555 square miles and home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. One of the main attractions of the park is its stunning peaks, which offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Two highlights of this drive were Snake Pass and Winnats Pass.

    After stopping to take some photos, I noticed that I had a screw in one of our types. This explained why the type was low in air when I checked the types earlier today. Fortunately, the tyre hadn't deflated, so we could still drive on it and diverted to Sheffield to get it fixed.

    After a nice lunch in Ashbourne, we drove to Coventry in heavy rain, which cleared when we arrived. Coventry has a rich history, dating back to the Roman times when it was a settlement known as 'Cofa's Tree'.

    During the Middle Ages, Coventry became an important centre for the cloth trade. It was also a significant religious centre, with many monasteries and churches being built in the city. In the 16th century, Coventry became a centre for the watchmaking industry. During the Second World War, Coventry suffered significant damage from German bombing raids. The city was rebuilt post-war, with many modernist buildings being constructed.    En savoir plus

    Stratford Upon Avon

    Stratford upon Avon is a town located in Warwickshire, England. It is situated on the banks of the River Avon and is famous for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare.     The museum was first established in 1993 as the British Heritage Motor Centre, but was later rebranded as the British Motor Museum in 2015. The museum's collection includes iconic British cars such as the Mini, Jaguar E-Type, and Aston Martin DB5, as well as lesser-known models like the Austin Allegro and Morris Marina.En savoir plus

    Day 26 - Coventry to Chichester

    After leaving Coventry, we went to Stratford upon Avon for some breakfast. Stratford upon Avon is situated on the banks of the River Avon and is famous for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare. The town has a rich history and is home to several historic buildings, including the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. We took a walk along the Avon River past the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. It is a beautiful town, one of my favourite towns in England. I could easily spend more time there.

    After breakfast, we went to the British Motor Museum, home to the world's largest collection of historic British cars, with over 300 classic cars on display. The museum was first established in 1993 as the British Heritage Motor Centre but was later rebranded as the British Motor Museum in 2015. The museum's collection includes iconic British cars such as the Mini, Jaguar E-Type, and Aston Martin DB5, as well as lesser-known models like the Austin Allegro and Morris Marina.

    We spent three hours at the museum, so we needed to hightail it in the afternoon to get to Chichester. We have booked a lovely apartment for the next five nights as we attend the Goodwood Festival of Speed for the next four days.    En savoir plus

    Day 27 - Goodwood Festival of Speed

    The Goodwood Festival of Speed is an annual celebration of motorsports and automotive culture, featuring a variety of vehicles, from classic cars to modern supercars, as well as motorcycles and other types of vehicles. The festival includes a hill climb, where vehicles race up a 1.16-mile course that winds through the Goodwood Estate and various exhibitions, displays, and activities related to the automotive industry.

    Today was our first day of the Festival of Speed, so it was a reconnaissance day, working out how we get there, where to park and where all the activities are. We arrived at the car park at about 9.15 am, after sitting in a queue for what seemed forever. We had to collect our tickets, and so did a thousand other people. So we had to wait another hour and a quarter to get our tickets.

    We had purchased grandstand tickets, so we headed for a grandstand when we finally entered the event. There was plenty of action on the Hillclimb, including a 75th celebration for Porsche cars. We enjoyed a great first day and will head in earlier tomorrow when again head to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.    En savoir plus
