Decided to start a blog for this adventure. Will add photos as I have time. Today the mosquitoes are winning and there fore not spending a lot of time sitting anywhere.
Started early today and have been to two lighthouses and multiple water falls. Absolutely beautiful but bugs are a bit over the topRead more

Dropped trailer at 10:30am, drove into town for festival and was able to get a ticket for boo cruise along Picture rocks national lakeshore. This was a great trip and the pictures do not tell the whole story. Really pretty. The last one is of an old lighthouse on Grand Isle. I am going to stay in the area for three days. It is currently a bit drizzly , the first rain of the trip. I went grocery shopping and back at camp. I will take it easy tonight and see what tomorrow brings. There are about 10 waterfalls that I can hike to so that is next on the list unless it rains tomorrow. The mosquitoes here are not nearly as vicious.Read more

  • Grand Marais, MI

    June 10, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

Woke up to rain and wind. Finally cleared out so out exploring Picture rocks national lakeshore. I am at the northeast edge and will work my way back to camp.
The first site was Sable Falls which was right around the corner from the what was called log slide. Apparently they used to drop logs over this sand dune to slide into Lake Superior to be then shipped.Read more

  • Au Sable lighthouse

    June 10, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

3.2 mile walk along the shoreline to this lighthouse. The sound of the waves crashing on the rocks was just like being along a rocky beach in California. It was a wonderful walk in the woods.

  • Miners Falls

    June 10, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

The last stop along the land tour of Picture Rocks was a 1.5 mile hike to Miners Falls, They did not mention the stairs down to the viewing site but was well worth the effort. Another interesting walk in the wood with really cute little blue flowers everywhere. The falls have been spectacular due to the all of the rain in the past few weeks. Luckily this area of the UP does not seem to have quite the mosquito hatching. I earned a dinner in town and a local beer, Laughing Fish, Not sure where some of the beer names come from .Read more

The photos are from sunset last night and the calmness of the lake today Yesterday we had white caps on the lake, it seemed to want to be an ocean. Pretty impressive.Read more

Ok Aaron Klenke told me about passties. It apparently is an Northern Michigan thing. They are like a pot pie but the crust is thicker and not soupy inside. I had a veggie one with potato, onion, carrot and broccoli. Rather tasty I was told they usually have gravy poured over them. But the story is that they were made for coal miners , wrapped in newspaper, put under their hat to stay warm, and eaten for lunch. So not sure about the gravy. I still need to look up the reason for the name. It was good, and Now will have to try them in a few other spots to see if they are the same everywhere.
Moving on sometime tomorrow but weather report is a bit crappy so not sure when.

    June 12, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

So rained all last night, slowed up a bit this morning so headed south. Arrived a bit ago and not raining but just started up. I was told Escanaba was the best place for pasties. Stopped and picked one up, now for a warm lunch. Rain slowed up mid afternoon so went for a walk in the woods. Then wandered the beach. Really pretty and hard to imagine it as just a lake.Read more

  • Betsy's House

    June 14, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

Arrived yesterday afternoon. The ferry ride was a bit choppy due to some winds but sunny. Betsy is having a few issues at the house due to a really cold and long winter. So we are getting to visit with plumbers and electrician. I am enjoying the white pelicans in the lake, and the fox that ran across the backyard.
Woke up this morning to sunshine and coffee by the lake. But raining now and will work on unpacking and organizing. I did get in an hour bike ride so the rain is ok.
    Photo is Betsy's backyard.

  • Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore

    June 20, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Went for a walk along the shoreline. It was very interesting. Once again another lake that thinks it is an ocean. The waves were huge. They have a bizarre display of 5 houses that were moved to this area after the 1933 World Fair. They were the houses of the future for the average family Now they are privately owned and being restored. The 1933 Worlds Fair was in Chicago so the houses were floated down to this location.Read more
