Grilled salmon rubbed with spices before BBQing. Salmon is very rich and a smaller portion may have sufficed. Delicious anyway.

Peruvian Salmon with Quinoa

We had salmon the other day so I substituted fillet steak.

The idea of having quinoa in salad was inspired by my sister-in-law Maria. Turns out to be a great combination with the avocado and lime juice dressing. The mashed avocado dip was pretty good however I still prefer the version Jonathan and Kim prepared for us last year when they visited us here in Raumati.

Today is Christmas Day and the Bonsai is fairing fine.
Maria and the girls will be passing by soon and we will be collecting Papou for Xmas lunch at the apartment.

Brazilian Breakfast

The boys have moved on to Brazil and in my search for Brazilian breakfast food this item keeps coming up - Pao de Queijo. It must be very popular.

South American cooking has been educational in terms of learning to use new ingredients. This recipe includes Tapioca Flour which I have learnt is the same as Arrowroot. It is a powder that looks like heroin. The moment you stir it it covers the bench and your clothes with a fine white dust.

The rolls tasted great but are very filling so you wouldn't want too many of them. I look forward to hearing what the indigenous ones taste like.

One Pot Shrimp in Coconut Sauce. Delicious combination of flavours and requires no ingredients you wouldn't find in a modestly stocked pantry.

Potatoes and Pineapple Brazilian Style

Maria and the girls join us for a BBQ this evening. Steaks and the usual fare accompanied by a side of Brazilian potato and pea salad and followed by a Brazilian pineapple dessert. Dimitra questioned the authenticity of the salad. The dessert didn't set in time so plenty left over.

I would recommend the dessert for the health conscious. It is a pineapple liquefied in a food processor with lime juice and some sugar added.

Traveler(Written by Mercina) My Opinion on the dinner served. Well, it was quite lovely, the steaks were nice and tender and the potatoes expertly grilled on the BBQ. The salad was fresh and delicious, nothing like any salad I've had before. The pineapple dessert was a revelation. As a fan of consuming some cool pineapple chunks in the evenings, this dessert was exciting and tasty. A great way to end the meal. Oh, and Poppy's cupcakes were good too I guess.

Dimitra and I are still enjoying the good life out here in Raumati but our minds are on the boys and their gangster escapades in Rio. Luckily they have moved on to a hopefully safer destination.

Our first Argentinian (or is it Argentine) meal was scraped together from the contents of the fridge and fresh Kapiti caught terekihi from my fishermen uncles. A link to Jamie Oliver's contribution is shown below. The BBQed turnip and pepper are mine.

This is the last bonsai report from Raumati. Next week we will be back in Wellington with the unhappy prospect of work on Tuesday after Wellington Anniversary.

Argentinean lentil stew. Unusual ingredients for lentils : Apple, BBQ sauce. It did taste good and we are looking forward to finishing the left overs.

Goodbye Argentina Meal

The boys have actually left Argentina but I haven't got my act together and researched Chilean recipes yet.

The black bean dish was delicious. I think I will be making that again. Chimichurri is ubiquitous in South American dishes. If you spread the green paste on your weetbix you could claim to have had a South American breakfast. Not so common is the Red Chimichurri I made today.

First Chilean Recipe

We're back in Wellington and I was keen to try something Chilean and that didn't involve the BBQ. The empanadas were very tasty mince pies. The salad was refreshing - I always like coriander in my salad.

The boys are hopping across the Argentine/Chilean border so regularly that I don't know what I should be cooking.
