• Neka Bay Kayaking and Bushwhacking

    Since our ship sails overnight, we get to start each day in a new place. So even though each day has the same outdoor activities -- kayaking, bushwhacking or riding in the skiff (Zodiac)--some of the scenery and wildlife is different each time.

    This morning, we set out in kayaks in the glassy water of Neka Bay. The mountains around us still had snow in places and a small waterfall ran down the side of them. In the shallows Darryl spotted what our guide Sam said was a Lion’s Mane jelly. We also saw a moon jelly (white globe). We also saw bald eagles in the trees and flying out to hunt.     In the evening we watched a pod of harbor porpoises. After dinner we were treated with a show of six or more humpback whales dive-feeding, which meant we got lots of glimpses of their tail flukes. Each whale’s tail is unique and there is a catalogue of whale tails, like a book of fingerprints. Our guide Kim was so excited to identify one of the whales named "Stamp," who has been seen since 1979!
