  • Campo Imperatore

    June 19, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Yesterday we've walk a long time in the plain with mountains surrounded. Stayed at 1700m and wind protected. Even the night was warm. Nice.
Today we've walked early the last part to Campo Imperatore and have breakfast. But here it is windy and much colder. Pretty fresh.
Now we need to hike up the pass and hope to find a way down into the valley through the snow fields. So we are on the way to Pietracsmela.

    June 19, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

They renovate everywhere. Pretty nice new houses. Probably the result of an earthquake. But only 25 people living here anymore. No supermarket... Only one hotel with bar/bistro. Most new houses being too foreigners they say. Hmm..Read more

  • On the way to Visso

    June 21, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

"Alm" walking today. Cows, horses and rarely small flocks of sheep. But all all not many. We meet someone older men searching for mushrooms. Between 1500 and 1800m it is not that got. Just warm. But no shadow. No trees. Just rolling green hills. Like in New Zealand. Someone's the mountains look cracked. You can imagine that the earth was active here before. We've filled up more water than usual, cause most fountains have had no water.Read more

  • Visso

    June 21, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

This was a warm day! Hiking on the ridge without trees got warm in the afternoon. The trail was too uneven to walk fast. And no water in the way. Finally Lupo could have a bath in rain water at a stable. And I've changed the route a little bit to get to a creek and shadow with trees. There we've tested the afternoon and walked the last part into town.
Visso is also completely damaged from the earthquake 2016. This people and show are in container or quick built houses. Only little shops etc.
Nothing to really see. Like the villages before. These old towns are r not existent anymore. Crazy.
It is 19:00 now, I charge the phone in a cafe and Lupo rests, but it's still warm for him. The only really good time to walk is in the morning.

  • Eremo Serrasanta

    June 23, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Arrived in a hurry at 16:00. Tough time for the dog and myself. So warm and not much water in the way. And the dog got bitten from a large sheep dog yesterday. So he was in not that good condition.
But we've arrived at the Eremo and hopefully can sleep here
The thunderstorm with hail arrived at 17:00 and the forecast predicted it to 18:00.
    Well done!

  • Monte Castellaccio

    June 25, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Today we've had a good timing at these tough conditions for Lupo.
We've started at 5am, walked 15km, have had breakfast, a rest and filled up our food supply. Then it was about 9:30am and it gots tougher. The sun heats up fast. I've cooled Lupo down with lots of showers and we drank a lot. In a hurry we've walked 11km uphill and down again and have found such a nice place to have a swim and rest. So we've stayed there for some hours. Actually the whole afternoon. Then we've hiked again from 17:30 until 21:15. So at the end of the day we've reached 40km.
    That's pretty good.

  • Breakfast @ Bocca Serriola

    June 26, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We've slept at the ridge and walked mostly on dirt roads to Boca Serriola. Lots of views to all the hills around. Appr. 700-900m high. Here at the intersection with the road is really a bar with a very small amount of food. I got my morning coffee, but we can not stay long. The sun heats up very fast.
We've detoured there last here and there sometimes because of weather and the condition of Lupo. If he has trouble with his legs or paws, he can not walk on every ground well. And the heat during the day is tough. Water gets now rate in the next stages. Hard to guess it before. We've bought food for some days, which results in a heavier backpack. Plus the water....

I am still wearing the first pair of shoes. They get more holes, but in the conditions right now it is no problem at all. But the cushion is almost none existent anymore. The insole and the EVA foam is very thin at the most used spots. Which gives you a very hard contact to the ground. That's tougher downhill with the heavier backpack.
The outer sole is almost flat, but not really often a problem right now. All the glue hold the parts of the shoe well together. Well made, actually.
But inside the inner sole ribs more and more on the thin mesh and destroys it. The destroyed mesh ribs at the socks and they get damaged more and more too. I've tried the shoe with a new insole and it feels immediately better. But it is not worth anymore. Soon I have to switch to a new pair of shoes and socks.
That's now more then 2500km on that shoe on different ground conditions.

  • Bocca Trabaria

    June 26, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Right now i am in Umbrien / Marken. The trail switches the border often. But in a few km we'll enter Toskana.
Right now we stopped at the pass (Bocca Trabaria). Unfortunately the fountain is 30min further down the hill. We've filled up at a private house before and still have 2l left. Thus continue to walk and try to reach the bivacco in 7km.
We are both tired now, but it will be downhill from now on and the places around here have not really been so nice. Lots of bugs biting me in the forest. If you sit in the shadow you get attacked like crazy. No fun.
    36km so far...

  • Papiglione

    June 26, 2023 in Italy ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Probably a bad decision to walk this path.. Especially at the end off the day. On VaSentiero it is not described as bad. But it is 50% completely as overgrown with brambles, high grass and Brennnesseln. It is s very small path in the forest and often uneven and always up and down. It is no fun for me. And the next 11km will be the same. At an intersection there have been 4 trails. The one I came from and the one I needed to go have been the worst. That's the Sentiero Italia (and E1). Unbelievable..

  • Morning walk

    June 27, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

We've slept way to less. It was a warm night, very silent. But from time to time the animals came close. Lupo barked and the sleep got interrupted. I guess most times only deers. Who knows.
Right now I am in the forest in the middle of nowhere. Not correct...I just can hear a donkey shouting! Interesting... There must be a farm close...Read more

  • Badia Prataglia

    June 28, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Mostly a walk thru the forest. 70% good trail. Other parts are a bit overgrown. Strangely I have not seen anybody. There are no long distance trails hiker here in the area. Yesterday I have seen quite a few Via di Francesco hikers.
Weather is cooler today. Often cloudy and sometimes a light rain. The soft forest ground with a cooler temperatures was ideal for Lupo.. He ran well. Km 30 at 14:00 is really fine.
    ...
We've waited for the opening of the shops and realized now, that they are all closed Wednesday afternoon. And NO shops the next DAYS !!! So we need to stop here and wait. At least, they open at 7:30am.
So I need to find a place to sleep here. It is cloudy again... So a roof would be nice.

  • Rifugio Campo dell'Agio

    June 28, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We've found a very quiet place close to the town. Just uphill. A huge BBQ area with toilets and a small room with fireplace. It is mild tonight and only s little bit wind. The food store opens tomorrow at 7:30am. So we can go to bed now and sleep longer than usual. And do not have to worry about rain.

Just before I have thrown away the first pair of shoes. Hard decision. I will wear a different model now and hope I will not get into trouble and get used to it.
The Altra Superior 5 later incredibly long. Probably about 2900km. But at the end, the stones just pressed too much through the sole and on hard ground walking was just as hard and tiring. So from now on I will wear an Altra Lone Peak 6.

Lucky's me, I got the Superior on sale for 60 Eur.

    60 € / 2900 = 2.1 ¢ each km

If you think about that calculation, that standard prices of trail runners are above 100 € and often get thrown away after 800-1000km ... That's quiet a lot of money just for the foot protection each mile.

  • Eremo di Camaldoli

    June 29, 2023 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

It's the second time I pass this Eremo. It is in the middle of a lovely forest. There is a very nice flair actually. The have a souvenir shop with horrible prices, but you get coffee and panini. :)
The first time I've passed it on The Via di Francesco (Franziskusweg) on the way to Assisi, about 2 years ago. I really like the area to hike.
