    Even though it was pouring rain, no, BECAUSE it was pouring down, I was determined to look out for some shielings. I found the bleak weather suited the atmosphere of the often abandoned and derelict huts better than the sunshine.

    Shielings on the Isle of Lewis were simple huts where the women and children took the animals and lived for the summer months. Some are still used by local families as weekend retreats and peat-cutting bases.
    But most are abandoned and in decay, together with the colourful exterior, the storm and rain produced an almost surreal and spooky ambiance. Very Lewis style.
