  • Curious

    June 16, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Although the main local inhabitants of the Shetlands are quite shy and easily scared - they are still very curious about the strange lady with that awkward machine (=camera) in her hands... I'm always watched...Read more

  • For arty people

    June 17, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Scalloway has a lovely atmosphere and attracts many artists. I'm not surprised. It's dreamy, sleepy but vibrant at the same time. Full of locals having a swim at night, a pint in the evening sun, or celebrating some sort of do with weird wigs and fancy dresses.Read more

  • Next door

    June 17, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Next door from our traditional Shetland cottage there's the roof missing. Like on so many other buildings here. While the masonry is still top notch. Not sure but I think they still have the law that they don't have to pay taxes for a building without a roof...Read more

  • (Vegan) Cake 24/7

    June 18, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The Cake Fridge in the Shetlands became an institution. And a tourist attraction. It is a tea room, open a few hours a day in summer. But if you come outside the hours or in winter - you're still able to taste the delicious homemade cakes. Either as a takeaway or in the lovely picnic area. There's a huge fridge with an honesty box and you may take what you want. Even arty souvenirs or hot drinks! And vegan cupcakes and tiffins - both delicious!
The two sisters and friends who are running this are so welcoming and friendly. They told me that although tourists and even coach groups are coming - it's also the locals who appreciate their service.

  • The Nesbister Böd

    June 18, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

In Shetland, a Böd was a building used to house fishermen and their gear during the fishing season. Today the böds (like in mainland Scotland a bothy) are used as a basic accommodation which can be booked in advance. They are often located in the most beautiful landscapes. The Nesbister böd is one of the most scenic.Read more

  • Shetland Receivers

    June 19, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

    Sounds on for the video!
The Shetland Receivers, next to the Shetland museum and the Mareel (art and event centre), play different noises, sounds, readings or interviews of locals. To keep the tradition of Shetland alive. What's played is depending on the wind - as life in the Shetlands depends on the weather in general. As less wind as more detailed the "broadcast". What a nice idea.Read more

  • Yell

    June 19, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

I think the island Yell is called like this because you can yell as loud as you want - nobody will hear you anyway... The drive is into the nowhere. More and more we are leaving civilisation and are now taking the small ferry to the island Unst.Read more

  • Charging Adventure

    June 19, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We have arrived on Unst, the most northerly island in the UK! A viking place.
And with only one 22kW charger! But since the island is small - we probably don't have to use it often, maybe today is even the only time.
We were worried what to do if this charger was broken. So we tested it immediately and all works fine! But very rude - another non charging car was blocking the second slot. A total no-go in general, but even more so with the only charger on an island!!!
I wrote a note for this unconsidered driver...

  • Crofter's Cottage

    June 19, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

On Unst we experience an authentic Shetland feeling while sleeping for a few nights in an old crofter's cottage.
There are no neighbours besides sheep - and probably some ghosts because next to it there's an abandoned church with a very old graveyard...
Inside the cottage is very modern refurbished (besides an adventurous bathroom).

  • Most Northerly - but more South

    June 20, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

Everything on Unst is "most northerly". The photo shows for example the most northerly house of the UK. And there is the most northerly church, the most northerly tearoom etc etc...
BUT - before I was more northerly (see my post before) than any of those things. Nothing is more northerly than Muckle Fugga!Read more

  • Vikings

    June 20, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Unst is thought to be the location where the Vikings first set foot on land in the North Atlantic area. There are the remains of at least 60 longhouses, the highest density of rural Viking sites anywhere, including Scandinavia. This longhouse and the ship "Skidbladner" show how the Vikings lived and sailed and brings us the Viking culture a bit closer.Read more

  • Bobby

    June 20, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

A bus shelter became indeed a tourist attraction on Unst.
It is the bus shelter of Bobby who had to wait in the harsh wind and rain every morning for the school bus when he was six years old. The old bus shelter was rusty and demolished. So he wrote, young as he was, to the local newspaper and asked for a new one. And so it was built. And he got his local "fame". That was 1996. Until 2002 there had been anonymous donors of decoration items and furniture for the shelter. A sofa. A painting. An old microwave... So Bobby can have it comfortably while waiting for the school bus.
Bobby is now long in his thirties and the shelter became an attraction. There is a committee who organises different themes for the decoration which changes a few times a year. At the moment the theme is "nautical". But after all - it is still a bus shelter. But the most photographed one!

  • The Reel Gin

    June 21, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

The award winning gin distillery on Unst was of course worth a stop.
And what else - it is the most northerly distillery in the UK...
Interesting gin variations I found in the shop. Gin with seaweed (hand picked from the shores of Unst), with chilli, with red grapefruit... Name it.
I actually opted for a Rhubarb & Bramble one, everything locally grown.

  • Amazon on Unst

    June 21, 2023 in Scotland ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

We are so used to doing our groceries in huge superstores like Tesco and the likes.
But there has been a time when a shop was a shop. Not a supermarket. Nor a superstore.
This time is still present in the Shetland Islands. Although Lerwick has some supermarkets - the rest of the islands hasn't.
And on Unst there is only one real shop. But that one does not disappoint.
Mangos? Green asparagus? Frozen Pizza? Vegan Pies? Or rather a chainsaw? A broom? Or some knickers?
    It is Amazon in small...
The shop itself is on the ground floor of the residential house and the shop entrance is the main door (including front porch).
    Very charming.
