    Hausbesichtigungen / Shopping

    February 11 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Zurück in Melbourne - Claudia‘s Geburi

    February 7 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    Melbourne

    January 26 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    Melbourne!

    January 24 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A great 5 days in Melbourne, Australia’s city of sport, culture and Yarra Valley wine.🍷! 🎾 📚
We had 2 tennis filled days and late nights at the Open, only surviving 9 minutes in the sun ☀️ before making new Aussie friends in the shady seats! Spent time exploring the arcades, architecture, streets, had coffee and sampled fab food as well as cooking for ourselves in our spacious apartment.

We hired a car 🚗 and took to the Great Ocean Road for 2 days, with the views of the sea contrasting with the ruggedness of the Great Otway National Park. With miles of golden beaches, crystal clear turquoise sea and kangaroos 🦘 hopping out roadside, the drive was stunning. The highlight being the 12 Apostles (actually 9) limestone stacks in the sea and multiple viewpoints along the way.

Next stop Sydney 😎 to stay with Vanessa (Lynne’s friend from primary school!) for more adventures and to celebrate Australia Day on 26th January. 🐨🇦🇺🎆

    Segeln in Port Phillip

    January 20 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

    Memory lane 🎓

    January 20 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

While on the walking tour our guide had mentioned a bakery with allegedly the best croissants in Melbourne, so we headed to Fitzroy to hopefully have less competition than the CBD location. We met three older ladies on the tram heading there as well which was very sweet. We had a ham and Gruyère croissant, cookie croissant, and yuzu cheesecake cruffin. It was indeed delicious.

We wandered towards the University of Melbourne, where I did a semester in 2015. Unfortunately my episodic memory is weak but I did have flashbacks at a few places. I was desperate to find my old accommodation but couldn’t remember the name, so we wandered for a while attempting to jog my memory. Finally we gave up when I had the idea to text my bff from my semester abroad, and she remembered! The ownership has changed but otherwise it looked similar.

We went back to the Airbnb for a rest before dinner at Salona, a Greek restaurant. It was a rare sit down dinner for us and we had a great time. The waiter thought Henry looks like an actor. I tried Moschofilero, a Greek wine. Tomorrow we head to Phuket!

    Shopping 🛍️

    January 19 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

We needed a few things before we head to Thailand Tuesday, so we went into the CBD and were very successful in finding them. We chatted to a shop cashier who is going to the Philippines a few weeks after we are and doing a similar boat cruise. It was very hot and humid so we had gelato (again).

Then we trudged to the botanical gardens. It turned out there was a big pride festival happening, so we soaked up the vibes which were very good. We kept walking to the Shrine of Remembrance, which had a very different vibe. They were doing a flag service that included bagpipes so that was fun. The botanical gardens have a big lake in the middle so we stopped there. We’re a bit limp today from the weather. There was a wedding happening at the lake cafe— it was fun to watch the bride and groom taking photos. We stopped for dinner groceries and headed back to the Airbnb.

    Koalas & penguins 🐧

    January 17 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 68 °F

Today we signed up for a tour that would take us to a few stops along the coast and then down to Philips Island to see the little penguin parade. We met our guide Woody and set off in a little van. He was very endearing and Australian and had his two teen daughters with him which was cute. First stop was Brighton beach, with the bathing huts. I was excited because I had been wanting to go recreate a photo from when I was here as a student ten years ago.

Then we headed to Moonlit Sanctuary, a small reserve. There was a bit of chaos because Woody said we could elect to do the koala interaction experience, but when we arrived there was only three spots left. Henry and I got two because we were at the front of the line which was just lucky. We were able to meet Victor the koala and pet him (Henry’s first time touching a koala). We also fed some wallabies but they weren’t that hungry really.

We stopped off at cape Woolamai beach which had some big waves and brave surfers. Then was the Nobbies, with beautiful coastal views. It was still only 6pm and the penguin parade doesn’t start until sunset, around 9pm. So we had a dinner stop— Henry and I brought leftovers and then got some of the best gelato we’ve ever had.

Finally it was penguin time! There were hoards of people. Woody said it sells out at about 2,000 tickets. They had a nice visitor center with some info about different species of penguins. Then we all sat on benches at a beach auditorium and waited for the penguins to come out of the ocean and cross the sand to their burrows. They were kinda hard to see, but once they had mostly come up we went up to the boardwalk and watched as they waddled through the burrows. They’re only about one foot tall, the smallest penguin species in the world. Their whole body wiggles as they walk up the hills. It was very cute. We couldn’t take pictures because the phone light distracts them (which unfortunately did not stop most visitors) so I included photos we were given to download. Then it was back to the bus and home at about 1am!

    Culture 🎨

    January 15 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

We started at the Ian Potter Centre to check out some Australian art. They had a good mix of colonial and aboriginal art. The difference in acknowledgment of Aboriginal contributions/land/culture compared to when I was here ten years ago is noticeable. Most places now include a land acknowledgment and information about the first achievements of the settlers are qualified with “except for the Aboriginal peoples who were already doing that for centuries”.

We had a quick lunch of some thick noodles. Then we met at the state library for our culture tour. An intense game of oversized chess was occurring, slightly undermined by how giant and unwieldy the pieces are. Our tour was very fun; our guide was a local bartender as well and had recently received his bachelors in tourism. We didn’t see as much street art as I expected so we wandered around a little extra after.

We took a tram ride up to Queen Victoria Market because Wednesday evenings in summer it’s a food hall. But we weren’t actually that hungry due to a giant lunch so we just listened to some live music. Our tour guide had recommended a bar that did half priced cocktails on Wednesdays so we hopped off the train in Richmond. My “cheesecake” cocktail was very nice.
