Mariazell, Erlaufsee und Mauthausen

Bereits früh morgens fahren wir in leichtem Regen Richtung Mariazell. Unterwegs wird der Regen stärker, wir kehren in einem Lokal ein um zu frühstücken und fahren danach in die Basilika Mariazell. Die Kirche wurde ja neu renoviert und bietet wirklich ein sehr schönes Flair. Johann fährt mit einer neuen LKW App über den Seebergsattel und folgt der Anweisung des Gerätes welche eine Abkürzung nehmen wollte.
Er bremst stark und biegt rechts ab. Dieser Weg führt durch enge Gassen und zum Glück schiebt er zurück. Bei dieser Bremsaktion wird im Wagen unten die Basilikum Flasche umgeworfen und alles schwimmt im Essig.
Mittagessen gibts am Erlaufsee im Seerestaurant mit frischer Forelle und frischen Saibling dann geht's weiter nach Mauthausen wobei die ausgefahrene Stufe vom Wohnmobil sich leider nicht alleine eingefahren hat und somit fahren wir fast zwei Stunden mit der ausgefahrenen Treppe, zum Glück ist nichts passiert. Abends landen wir dann in Mauthausen und stehen direkt an der Donau. Unser Abendessen im Auto ist guter Käse und Wein und wir genießen mit Fernsehen den schönen Tag der zu Ende ging nach dem üppigen Regen hat uns in Mauthausen wieder die Sonne begrüßt.Read more

Mariazell

Mariazell is a hub of winter sports in the Austrian Alps and is said to be a favorite ski destination in this part of the world. The town is also well known for its Basilica (see another post).
The 1st 2 pictures are in the Hauptplatz or main square. It is a lovely alpine town.
The other 2 pictures are taken from the top of the tower on top of Bürgeralte, the mountain behind Mariazell. While the weather wasn't all that great, these pictures give you a feel for why Mariazell is popular as a ski destination and as an area of spectacular scenery. There may be no snow in evidence, but I can say that while standing atop that tower, it certainly felt like snow was close.Read more

Mariazell Basílica

Also known as the Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary, this is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe. The site dates back to the 13th century, but the current building dates to the 17th century.
The 1st picture is of the front facade. The yellow in front of the door is a lift vehicle for some maintenance work in progress.
The 2nd picture is in the nave looking at the very ornate Gnadenkapelle or grace chapel. This chapel is said to be located on the site of the 1st monastic cell here and serves as the chancel of the nave. If you look in the center of all the decorative work, you can make out a small white gown . This gown dresses a statue of Mary said to have been brought to the site by the first monks in the 12th century.
If you look above the altar and altarpiece of the grace chapel, you can see that there is a large domed space behind the altar. This area houses the high altar shown in the 3rd picture and the stature of Mary of a pedestal.
The last picture looks up at the main organ that dates to the 17th century, with numerous renovations and enhancements over the he centuries.Read more

every time i’m around here it’s hot… so we come here to walk along the river schwarza and take a bath. the water is crystal clear and refreshing cold. at one slope somebody tied a rope at a tree and you can swing yourself from the cliff into the river - absofuckinglutely great 👍.
so the schwarza is a river in lower austria, it’s a source river of the leitha. a little way to schwarzau markt it flows through the höllental. the höllental is a narrow valley between the steep limestone massifs schneeberg and rax. it stretches over a length of 16.5 km between schwarzau im gebirge and hirschwang and, due to its natural beauty, belongs to the natura 2000 area of the northeast rim alps: hohe wand - schneeberg - rax. the course is followed by a well-developed road, the höllentalbundesstraße, a touring route that is particularly popular with motorcyclists. in the valley and the side valleys there are some important sources of drinking water supply, the water of which is directed to vienna via the 1st viennese high spring water pipeline.Read more

like i already said, the marienhof formerly was a guest house, where you could stay for "sommerfrische". "sommerfrische"??? what the heck is this?
the word "sommerfrische" refers to both, the seasonal relocation from the city to the country and the destination. from the middle of the 19th century, the "sommerfrische" was an integral part of the summer life of the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie, which was mostly spent in seasonal villas built for this purpose. these often unheatable summer villas were often designed by well-known architects in the so-called home style. those who could not afford their own summer residence stayed in inns and then increasingly in private quarters. so "sommerfrische" and the beginning tourism are closely linked, in addition to the accommodation, there are also local entertainment offers for summer visitors (summer guests), such as the previously unknown outdoor swimming pool at lakes, hiking or mountaineering.

arrived! it’s the third time i stay here in this big house 🏡. it used to be a guest house for “sommerfrische”. every time i stayed in another room. first time in the one with the painted 🎨 floor, then in the green 🟢 one, this time in the single 🛌 one with balcony. gabi invested (and still invests) a lot of time and creativity to renovate each room in another manner. it’s simply lovely 🥰. in short: gabi is a magician 🪄. around here you can do wonderful hikes🚶‍♀️and pick blueberries or mushrooms or simply sit around with you friend, cook, chat and enjoy „sommerfrische“.Read more

Zweieinhalb Stunden Fahrt, one way ist definitiv nicht ohne, hat sich aber sehr gelohnt! Dank Firmenwagen auch ohne Fahrtkosten und einer kleinen aber feinen Wandergruppe von vier Leuten. Jana und mich eingeschlossen. Unheimlich schöne Landschaft und gerade zur rechten Zeit- ab November ist die Strecke bis Frühjahr gesperrt.Read more
