    Day 1 on the bike

    Today we picked up the bike loaded and started the adventure. It rained all day so got to test out the waterproofing of all my gear so far so good. I rode to pula and did my first boarded crossing in to Slovenia rode for a few hours then crossed back in to Croatia. The last 5km I stopped to get fuel and my bike did not start up again water must be in the electric starter button luckily a bloke form the bar saw me going to try jump start the bike and ran out and gave me a hand.Read more

    Day 2 bike

    Today we started the day trying to fix my bike my self took apart the switch and blew it out no luck. So of to a mechanic the first one I went knew no English so with lots of hand actions and google translate I managed to communicate with him unfortunately he was to busy to look at it but rang all the local mechanic for me. I went to a bike shop they where also to busy then I went to Yamaha bike shop they looked at it was just a wire came off simple and I was good to go. Went to pula arena and looked around pula for a bit then started my ride up the coast. Nice roads and made it to zenj around 5pm found a hotel same thing no English but managed to get a room for 60 euros in hotel art with water views. Then went for a walk around up to the fort and to the cathedral the local children choir was playing in the church and finished the day with a good seafood feed.Read more

  • Kroatien im Bummelmodus
    Day 4

    Uvala Stoja

    April 29 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    Heute war es größtenteils windarm.
    Deswegen nutzten wir den Vormittag um nochmal nach Rovinj rein zu gehen und dann bei den Tanushi's ein Abschiedsbier zu zelebrieren.
    Dann legten wir doch ab und mit einem Haucherl von Wind ging's weiter der istrischen Küste entlang südwärts.
    Zu faul den Genacker zu setzen hat uns dann am südlichen Ende der Brioni Inseln der Wind endgültig verlassen.
    Mit dem Karpfenhäcksler erreichten wir die Bucht Stoja. Als enziges Boot in der Bucht durften wir an einer unglaublichen Show einer größeren Delfinschule beiwohnen, mit wirklich atemberaubenden Sprüngen und Formationen! Nah genug um es genießen zu können, weit genug um nicht in Versuchung zu kommen, es filmen zu wollen...
    Zum Abendessen habe ich dann einen 34 Jahre alten Wein, den ich 1998 von einem befreundeten Winzer aus Purbach zu meinem 40er bekommen hatte, aufgemacht. Doppelt Gold prämierter Neuburger Beerenauslese. Man soll es ja nicht glauben, aber der Tropfen war sensationell und hat den Abend endgültig abgerundet!    Read more

    Fort Maria Louisa

    Eigentlich wollten wir eine kleine Wanderung machen. Daraus wurden 3 Stunden Entdeckungstour in militärischen Sperrgebiet.
    Der freundliche Soldat hat uns am Ende des Weges durch das Tor nach außen gelassen, irgendwie müssen wir ja schließlich dort hinein gekommen sein😎.Read more

    Day 11-Croatia; Pula

    Later start today which was nice. The rain forecasted didn't arrive until about 4pm and by then we were having a very large (difficult to locate these) under cover coffee  in the main square (no majorettes this time). 

    Before the coffee, we went to Pula castle/fort and which was actually unexpectedly interesting. I even found the football museum of interest (silly photos attached). I know I hear you say ' Football and a museum interesting to Tara'!!??

    The fort has a top level with great views. We had a few silly moments at the top of the tower (see videos). We then proceeded down a lift to a lower level which was used as a prison in the past and wasn't all that interesting. In the second lower level below there was oddly lots of old pictures of the trams that used to be a plenty in Pula. We then realised that yesterday we had walked past many of the places where the trams used to go. This included an area that was by the sea that had huge walls obscuring the views. This was the barracks of old and the tree lined roads were the old tram routes but the road was basically unused and unkempt now. 

    Also this 2nd level was made up of many  underground tunnels that were used to travel during war times without being seen and as shelters. We exited at one of the tunnels which brought us out in the centre of the old town (very exciting). 

    We had an ice cream then went on to go in to the Amphitheatre which we thought wouldn't necessarily be worth it as we could see quite a lot from the perimeter. Again it was better than expected as there were several qr codes that could be scanned to tell us about what was there before and what we were looking at. 

    Then we went in search of the mosaic 'Punishment of Dirce'. Not sure what we were expecting but I think we were at least expecting it to be more obvious and more touristy. As it happens it is hidden incompicuously nearly under some recently built flats. We nearly missed it! 

    The  mosaic is a floor of a Roman house of which one part is the bit we were expecting. Very impressed with the whole thing but totally surprised at the complete odd location. 

    We returned to our accommodation after coffee and set about getting prepared for our onward travel to Venice tomorrow. We listed to some wonderful music by Errol Garner and chilled out having a beer as the wine had been consumed yesterday.    Read more

    Day 10-Croatia; Pula

    Gorgeous sunny and hot day. We started off exploring the old town and of course included the Roman amphitheater. It's pretty impressive and mighty huge! We took far too many photos and then had a beer in a nice spot in the sun.

    We decided we needed to get some exercise so planned to find a beach up the coast. With Google in charge of where to go, we walked. The coast line here is not as picturesque as much more under developed and as a result more constructions going up. The area is less touristy than where we have come from hence less was open along our walking route. We did come across a cool water skiing centre where a bit like ski lifts, people are taken around a circuit with optional jumps. Andy was tempted to give it a go.... We carried on with our walk and 5.5 miles in total our round trip found us back in the old town where we had a very late lunch. Somehow, after eating we ended up in the middle of a huge majorette parade in the main square but as we are both most definitely not fans of the art we left as soon as we could.

    Tag 2 – Wellen, Wind und Wunderwerke der Bordküche

    Die erste Nacht an Bord unserer PACE – ruhig, entspannt, ohne Schaukeln. Wer hätte gedacht, dass eine riesige Marina mit hunderten von Booten derart friedlich sein kann? Kein Motorenbrummen, kein Leinenknarren – nur wir und die Vorfreude auf den ersten richtigen Segeltag.

    Nach einem kleinen Frühstück folgte das wichtigste Ritual eines jeden Skippers: der intensive Wettercheck. Die Adria ist nämlich kein launischer See, sondern ein ernstzunehmendes Revier. Man muss wissen, was sie heute für ein Gesicht zeigt: Yugo (Scirocco) – feuchter Südwind? Bora – kalter, trockener Nordostwind? Oder vielleicht der gute alte Mistral aus Nordwest? Unsere Prognose: 12 Knoten auflandiger Wind. Klingt harmlos. Bedeutet aber, dass der Wind von der See her bläst – schöne Wellen inklusive.

    Kaum hatten wir den Schutz des Hafens verlassen, zeigte uns die Adria, was „schöne Wellen“ wirklich heißt. Bis zu vier Meter hohe Wellen, und das gleich am ersten Tag! Unser 34-Fuß-Schiff hüpfte wie ein freudiges Seepony über die Wellen. Wer jetzt noch nicht seefest war, würde es bald werden – oder es zumindest bitter bereuen, gefrühstückt zu haben.

    Trotz der schwungvollen Einlage machten wir uns mit unserem schwimmenden Zuhause vertraut und meisterten die Bedingungen mit wachsender Routine. Bis der Wind sich entschied, eine Mittagspause einzulegen. Plötzlich Flaute. Von vier Meter hohen Wellen zu ruhigerer See in wenigen Stunden – willkommen auf der Adria! Also Motor an und weiter.

    Wir erkundeten zwei Buchten, bevor es Zeit wurde, in unseren Hafen einzulaufen. Und hier kam die nächste Herausforderung: Manövrieren zu zweit. Klingt machbar, ist aber auf einem Segelboot ein echter Kraftakt. Leinenmanagement, Fender, Geschwindigkeit, Wind – plötzlich war alles gleichzeitig wichtig. Aber wir haben es geschafft. Höchstprofessionell. (Zumindest, wenn niemand genau hingeschaut hat.)

    Zum Abschluss öffnete das exklusive Crew-Restaurant wieder seine Pforten. Diesmal auf der Speisekarte: gebratene Kartoffelknödel an butterblanchiertem Karottengemüse – von Bordkoch Oliver in Perfektion zubereitet. Sterneverdächtig. Und absolut verdient nach diesem Tag.

    Ob Tag 3 uns wieder eine wilde Achterbahnfahrt oder eine entspannte Sonnencruise bringt? Wir werden sehen… ⛵😎    Read more

    Opatija

    Opatija known as the ‘great dame’ of Croatian tourism and the pearl of the Adriatic. Opatija translates to Abbey and it’s named after the Abbey built here some 1000 years ago! It’s set on the Istrian coast and has all the character and charm of grand sweeping promenades and architecture, set against the sparkling Adriatic. We walk through luscious landscaped parks and gardens into historic Abbeys with choirs and church bells ringing. On the ocean front swimming is pure magic in crystal clear calm seas.     Die Ruhe nach dem Sturm

    Gestern Abend wurden wir von einem heftigen Gewitter mit Sturmböen überrascht🙈 Zum Glück hatten wir hilfsbereite Nachbarn die geholfen haben unser Markise bei heftigen Windböen abzubauen. Milo ist ganz tapfer im Wohnwagen geblieben und hat auf seinen schlafenden Bruder aufgepasst. Er bekam nur Panik als der Schwimmring von Mael an seinem Fenster vorbei flog 😂 Wir konnten ihn aber zum Glück retten ☺️ Später kam dann noch starker Regen mit Blitz und Donner. ⛈️ Wir haben aber alles gut überstanden und am nächsten Morgen wurden wir wieder mit blauem Himmel und Sonnenschein begrüßt. Wir haben nochmal einen schönen Tag am Meer verbracht. Milo hat seinen neuen LKW getestet und mit Farida viele Feuerwehreinsätze am Meer gehabt 👨‍🚒😅 Am Abend haben Mehrdad, Milo, Daniel und Farida nochmal eine kleine SUP Tour gemacht und den Sonnenuntergang vom Wasser aus gesehen 🌅.Read more
