    Microclimate, Ambas Gorge, Aba Waterfall

    Here in Tris Ekklisies there is a pronounced microclimate. The sun burns on the steep mountains and warms them up, the wind usually comes from the sea. There are hardly any clouds here, the sun almost always shines, even if the weather in the next village inland is cloudy.

    The warm and humid sea air here has no time to condensate and form clouds, it is immediately pushed up the steep mountain into the Ambras Gorge.

    There it pushes up the cliffs and forms clouds at the top of the mountain that continue into the Asterousia-Mountains, mountain villages and the Messara plain. There aren't many, they're freaking out, but there it has some and none in Tris Ekklisies. 🤩 In addition, it has a few degrees more, due to the mountains warmed up by the sun.

    We went there to watch the spectacle. You can see the imposing gorge and Tris Ekklisies from above.

    The Ambas Gorge begins at a small plateau near the village of Paranymfi (710 m altitude) and ends at the beach of Tris Ekklisies. It is a 4 km long and beautiful gorge with many narrow passages accessible only by experienced hikers. You have to overcome more than 20 vertical places with rope, the largest of which is 45m. You can visit the simpler part of the gorge from Tris Ekklisies.

    The main feature of the gorge is the Aba waterfall with a height of 145m. He is rarely seen, only if it has rained a lot beforehand. He is one of the 10 largest waterfalls in Greece and falls down several stages.

    Hungry!

    I just quickly unloaded the luggage and put the groceries in the fridge. On the way I went briefly shopping in the village shop in Charakas.

    Of course, Manolis' mother has packed the fridge full again and tonight she will certainly bring down dinner again. 😋

    Aba Wasserfall

    Fast hätten wir den Gedanken, den Aba Wasserfall zu sehen, wieder verworfen......
    Denn eigentlich wollten wir durch die Aba Schlucht wandern, stellten jedoch fest, dass man diese nur mit Kletterausrüstung bezwingen kann.
    Marco wollte trotzdem hinfahren. Schon die Fahrt durch das Hinterland war unfassbar schön. Blauer Himmel, saftig grüne Wiesen und viele kleine Oliven Plantagen, dazwischen immer wieder Mandelbäume in voller Blüte und die Wiesen übersäht von kleinen gelben Blumen. Dahinter die Zweitausender mit frischem Schnee auf den Gipfeln. Einfach wunderschön. Wir spazierten über einen angelegten Weg zum Aussichtspunkt. Scheinbar ist der Weg in der Saison sehr frequentiert....
    Der Wasserfall ist im Moment trocken, da die Schneeschmelze in den Bergen noch nicht eingesetzt hat, doch die Aussicht auf die Schlucht und den kleinen Ort unten am Meer war atemberaubend schön. Wir genossen es, den Ort ganz alleine für uns zu haben. Marco traute sich auch über den Zaun und setzte sich auf die Klippen und ich stieg noch etwas höher. Es erinnerte mich an den Preikestolen in Norwegen. Ich weiß ja nicht, was sie sich davon versprachen, doch über uns kreisten plötzlich die Geier. 😅    Read more

    Hiromili Beach

    Endlich war das Wetter wieder schön und warm und so beschlossen wir, in die Schlucht zu wandern. Zunächst ging es an der Küste entlang bis in den nächsten Ort. Da aber ein unangenehmer Wind ging und eine dicke Regenwolke über der Schlucht hing, entschlossen wir uns spontan, nicht in die Schlucht zu wandern, sondern dem Küstenweg zu folgen. An einer kleinen Kirche bogen wir Richtung Meer ab, denn Marco hatte von oben eine Bank entdeckt. Dort wollten wir rasten. Doch von dort aus führte eine ziemlich steile Treppe nach unten zum Meer und zu einem kleinen Kiesstrand. Dort fanden wir sogar ein windstilles Plätzchen mit Sonne satt zum Genießen. Wie wunderbar. Welch eine gute Entscheidung. Die Zeit verflog wie nix. Eine ganze Zeitlang wurden wir von einigen Militärflugzeugen überflogen. Klingt irgendwie schon etwas beängstigend, wenn die Dinger mit Überschallgeschwindigkeit über einen hinwegfegen.Read more

    Day 4

    My new remote office setup

    This time I once more optimized my remote office setup - a hub and an external travel monitor have been added.

    Until now I didn't have a hub with me, but worked with a small USB-C-A adapter, so two USB-A and two USB-C ports were enough. This saved space, but the adapter was fragile and wobbly. I now have a small 4-port USB-A hub, which makes a solid impression.

    I also got an external travel monitor from Dell from my company - that's 1000 times better, now I can have the video conference on one monitor and the screen share on the other - that's a quantum leap! Until now I had decided against an external travel monitor because I couldn't assess the quality. But my company had one in stock and after trying it out I was sold!

    The external travel monitor fits in my laptop bag, so I do not really need more space.    Read more

    Auszeit in Kastri

    Wir nehmen uns eine kleine Auszeit vom Leben unterwegs. In Kastri, an der Südküste Kretas, haben wir uns in ein Häuschen eingemietet. Hier schätzten wir den grosszügigen Platz, viel heisses Wasser zum Duschen & die grandiose Aussicht aufs Meer.
    Es war in den vergangenen Tagen oft wunderbar mild. So haben wir viel Zeit am Strand verbracht & waren sogar (kurz) im kalten Meer baden.

    Ganz ohne unterwegs sein geht es aber nicht 😉 Wir machen Ausflüge zum Wandern, Sightseeing & Einkaufen.    Read more

    Kapetaniana / Dermatos - ⛰️⛰️🍪☕️

    Le soleil est revenu olééé ! Et les petits dej de bivouac aussi ! La vie est trop chouette ouais ouais !
    On remballe et on enfourche les vélos… sur quelques km avant de les pousser car la piste est caillouteuse et trop pentue. Mais elle les vaut, car en haut, la vue est imprenable. On découvre d’autres montagnes, d’autres pistes à venir. Nos seuls compagnons sont des moutons, des biquettes et même une bande de vautours ! 🪶 On kiff, qu’est ce qu’on kiff.
    La descente est caillouteuse elle aussi, mais peu importe. On bourlingue, les vélos et les sacoches suivent, jusqu’à présent. 🤞
    Les paysages oscillent entre montagne déserte, prairies verdoyantes (on dirait l’Irlande), et petits villages perdus. Des mini chapelles flambantes neuves ponctuent les lacets.
    Il est temps de faire une pause avec le reste de la tome et des crackers de maman. Nous jetons notre dévolu sur un petit kiosk en bois. A peine arrivés, une dame sort de chez elle pour nous proposer de l’eau et un café ! Nous lui offrons une carte pour la remercier et expliquer notre voyage. Elle retourne chez elle, pour finalement nous apporter des gâteaux de noël, des chocolat et des biscottes (ah oui, on ne vous a pas raconté que les crétois raffolent des biscottes).
    Après, c’est de la descente. East peasy vous me direz ? Que nenni ! Une descente oui, mais + que Gravel. On bourlingue, mais avec moins de vigueur. On en profite pour filmer et prendre de jolies photos.
    Enfin arrivé à la mer, on fait quelques courses dans le dernier mini market d’ouvert, qui fait aussi office de café.
    Notre petit bivouac idyllique au bord de l’eau signera le premier bain de l’année pour ma part ! 🦭    Read more

    Day 185–186

    Zaros / Kapetaniana - ⛅️👋🧀🌄

    Le réveil sonne, mais nos corps, sachant pertinemment que c’est le dernier matin sous la couette, peinent à se lever.
    On petit dej avec les croates qui nous tiennent compagnie depuis 1 semaine, et on s’active pour tout boucler.
    A 11:30 sonne l’heure de quitter la Maison Bleue. Elle nous aura permit de bien se reposer et de se remplir le cœur avant de repartir à l’aventure.
    Je n’ose même pas dire au revoir à Vero, le petit chat veron qui a prit l’habitude de dormir sur le petit siège devant notre porte.
    L’excitation fini par prendre le dessus et nous partons : d’une montagne à une autre, en passant par la plaine.
    Que c’est bon de sentir l’air, les odeurs, entendre les sons, remarquer les plus petites fleurs sur le bas côté. On est ravis !
    Maman et papa nous on envoyé un colis de fromage et de crackers et autres délices, nous avons donc une grosse tomme à manger dans les sacoches ! On se prend donc une pause fromage avant une grosse ascension. Vu son profil, on se donne 3h. Mais c’était sans compter notre exaltation, et la playlist de Hugues ! Au bout d’une heure, nous sommes en haut. Vue à 180 degrés sur la mer. Et la montagne, sauvage. Avant de s’y aventurer, on rempli nos gourdes au tuyau d’arrosage d’une maison. 🤫 Mais la porte s’ouvre ! Une dame apparaît, nous fait un énorme sourire et nous propose un café, avant même de nous dire bonjour. On acceptera des cookies de noël, qu’on dévorera sous les yeux curieux et ébahi d’un jeune garçon.
    Pour la nuit, on aura pas à choisir vue mer ou vue montagne. Les deux ma capitaine. Avec de la tartiflette s’il vous plaît. Et une chouffe. 🍻    Read more

    Greek coffee

    Today is my last full day here in Tris Ekklisies. An ordinary day with swimming, sitting on the balcony, drinking orange juice and so on... And there are quite some things I'm going to miss from Sunday on...

    Definitely the ocean, my lonesome private beach, the sun, the blue sky, my balcony with ocean view, the sleeping village, the old Greeks who feed me when I sit at the bakery and work...

    And I will miss Greek coffee.

    It is prepared like Turkish coffee, but only boiled twice. A small metal pot is filled with finely ground coffee powder, which is then poured over with cold water and then boiled. A characteristic feature of Greek coffee is the coffee grounds, which are poured into the cup with the coffee.

    I tried to buy some in Hamburg this year but it's very expensive. The I tried to ground coffee beans very finely myself but since it is really really finely grounded, I did not manage. So this time I bought a huge amount and will put it in the freezer 😁.    Read more

    Serpentines

    I have to drive these serpentines if I want to go shopping somewhere other than in the vegetable car.

    I love the view and as long as it doesn't rain cats and dogs, the route is a lot of fun.
