    Čez trte do gradička

    April 27 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

    Day 15 Siena to Montereggioni

    May 9 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

The sky today looks a lot better in leaving Siena. Some people rave about the city but I still don’t warm to it. Maybe because once the sights have been seen (you pay to see the duomo) you can only shop and eat.
What a great days walk. The Weather was perfect cloudy with bits of sunshine but not hot. Mostly through forest and at times along muddy tracks but it is always nice to hear the birds and again a cuckoo’s singing. I passed two trail angel places one supper large with wine, cappuccini, cakes, drinks all for donation. A group of Italian men came along and had two bottles of wine. I’m not sure when they would arrive at their destination. Monteriggioni is small and buzzing but full of character and atmosphere. What a great day I have had. 20km with ok not 400m elevation.

Day 13 and 14 San Quirico to Siena

    May 8 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Day 13 - started with lots of rain again and spirits low, poor sleep in the Ostello, no food in my pack or to get something to eat on the way today and nowhere to rest out of the rain on the path today. so in practicing flexibility after about 7km I walked back to San Quirico and caught the bus to Buonconvento. So I still did about 14 km without getting struck by lightening. Now I am in an apartment dry and with food in my stomach.
Day 14 - my watch cable is not working so I need the day in Siena trying to find a replacement. My Garmin watch is important as it gives me all my data. This meant a train ride to Siena.
Well 15000 steps around Siena and it’s now 6pm and by chance I found one in a $2 phone shop. Such a sigh of relief.
Tomorrow I will continue my journey by foot

    San Gimignano Part 1

    May 8 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Today we got up and headed to San Gimignano, the town of towers! So apparently there used to be 72 towers in this tiny town as all the rich families built their own tower to show how rich they are, but most were destroyed during WWII, though 14 still remain! So it was fun wandering the town with all these towers everywhere.

It was also market day and I had read somewhere that it was a food market today, but it was just a normal market with a mix of things. I did find a porcelain bowl that I loved and had to bring home with me! It is a small town so the market was pretty small, but it was fun wandering. I don’t think Raymond liked the town as much as I did as he said it was a lot of tourist shops, which it was, but nicer ones that I liked so I didn’t mind ;)

    Monteriggioni

    May 7 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

After Siena we headed over to Montereggioni, a super tiny little castle town. Being generous it might take a minute to walk from one end of town to the other, and maybe 15 seconds to go the width of it. There were three streets so we walked them all and spied on the views which were meh, then back to the car. We could have walked on the a section of the city wall, but it cost €5 which seemed way too expensive for what it was. I honestly don’t see how it would have taken us more than 5 min to walk the whole thing including stopping every 2 feet for a photo. So we skipped that and were back to the car 15 min after we left. The parking cost too much too…when we were walking around Raymond was like that tiny town with the Vegan restaurant felt like a town…this feels like a tourist trap. I was like that’s cause it was a town and this is a tourist trap! So i would not come back here again as it was nothing special and only for tourists (though a pilgrimage route does go through there!)Read more

    Toskanski homestay

    April 29 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

    Siena!

    April 3 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Took my last day trip for class! We went to visit the rivals of Florence. Siena is about an hour bus ride away and we got to take a tour for class. We visited the Siena cathedral which was one of the coolest churches I’ve been inside. They had rich decoration all over. They have been in competition with Florence for hundreds of years but I say thank you to them because they are the reason for the Duomo in Florence. The duomo was built to one up Siena and I definitely think we won. However, Siena was absolutely gorgeous and had a much more small town vibe than Florence. I have gotten used to lots of walking here but Siena put my stamina to the test with hills. We are blessed with flat ground in Florence. I also ate the best pizza I have had in Italy ever in Siena. I haven’t stopped thinking about it and I probably won’t for the rest of my life.Read more

  • Day 17

    San Gimignano

    February 18 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

It was another strenuous day of walking. I thought I might lose Phil for a little bit, but everything straightened out and we made it to our destinstion.

Early this morning, we met 4 Italian pilgrims. They seemed very fit and quickly left us in the dust. We stopped at a winery to get a stamp and then a short while later, Phil was having trouble with his pack and walking really funny. At one point he really scared me and said he just couldn't carry his pack any further. I knew I could not carry both our loads, but after stopping for a rest, he unpacked and repacked things more evenly and seemed better.

We hiked through mud, vineyards, and olive groves again. We met a man named Mario who owned a large tourist villa and was out walking his dog. It was good to chat with him as we walked. He told us there were deer and wild boar in the area and at least two wolves, which is quite rare in Europe. He told us how it was to the next road, etc.

We managed to get on the road 40 minutes too late for today's bus, so we just walked the last 4 miles. Lots of very steep hills. We are pooped, but I am proud of us. We'll shower and treat ourselves to a restaurant supper tonight if we can stay awake that long.

    San Gimignano

    January 1 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Klaus, Myself, Kyle and Molly drove to San Gimignano. We started at a beautiful vineyard called Tenuta Torciano for a wine tasting and tuscan lunch. The food and wines were delicious and luckily they offered shipping back to Michigan. We then drove to the Medieval town of San Gimignano the town and views were beautiful, everything I picture when I think about the Tuscany region. We explored and had a snack before making our way back to Florence. We grabbed the other two kids and walked to a wine window before making our way to our Pasta and Tiramisu cooking class. We drank prosecco and learned to make Tiramisu, ravioli, and tagliatelle. Once everything was prepared the restaurant cooked the pastas for us with sauce and we sat down with wine and tasted our creations. Back at the condo we started packing for our flight to Frankfurt tomorrow.Read more

    Day 39 ... 9 October 24

    October 6, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Day 1 of my Viterbo to Vetralla of my Via Francigena , was positively excellent.
However after my "3 Orange" service initially cut out, my plans changed.
I should say my 3 Orange service was updated only a few days ago.
There was GigaByte's of data left, being unaware there was no GPS.
Moving on, I found many Italians wanting to help. (See 8th photo). It was resolved. A taxi took me back into beautiful Viterbo. 3 Orange updated my service ☝️. Problem 1 solved, but all this took time.
So this 88YO executed Plan 2.
Yes I succumbed to the luxury of taking the Bus all the way to Vetralla. Relaxed me ... and I'm not ruling Bus services out (one of the huge benifits is that you do get to enjoy these Etruscan villages and Italian friendships,).
Pencil Plans are to walk 17+ Ks to
    Capranica Tomorrow☝️
I will comment on some of these photos. Point being I was helped many times by English speaking Italians and I am genuinely grateful. 9th photo is an Italian gentleman who gave me a Bus Ticket to Vetralla!!!
In the photos that follow are a few of these Italian good sumerians. Yes Lucky me.
PS last photo is one of Magic's boy friend in Italy
