    Sightseeing Amsterdam

    April 20 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    A trip to Nigtevecht.

    April 19 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

Today was the day to explore Henny's hometown until we found her childhood home. We think we found it! We rode on the smallest public bus ever, with a very friendly and helpful driver. The day was sunny and the scenery beautiful and we all had so much fun walking along Vreelandseweg. After deciding on a house we took many photos, hoping that it was the right place. Henny is pretty confident that we found her dutch home.
After that was when the song and dance began. We spotted a Restaurant across the Vecht with a sign pointing to a row boat. We rang the number and the man told us we could just row across. What could go wrong? Eventually we made it thanks to Eloise's newly learned rowing skills! Thankfully she had some lessons in Argentina. We managed to laugh our way across in 2 trips, and had a lovely Italian lunch then had to row back again in front of a bigger audience.
We arrived back at Harderwijk to find a local celebration in progress. Today they were celebrating 80 years since the region was liberated by the Canadians. Stunt planes and army tanks on show. Beautiful sunset over the lake.

    Amsterdam the Netherlands

    April 16 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

This morning we took the classic guided canal cruise on Amsterdam’s canal ring and saw some stately homes of Amsterdam’s Golden Age. There are so many houseboats on the canals, and I understand that it is extremely expensive to own a space for one. Also people are not kidding when they say there are a lot of bikers in Amsterdam. They are everywhere and don’t necessarily pay attention to traffic laws. It is dangerous if you’re not watching! We also took a guided walking tour and saw 17th century home of Rembrandt and the Koninklijk Paleis (Royal Palace). Royal guards and police were there which indicates that King William Alexander was present today. Parts of Amsterdam date all the way back to the 9th century! We saw coffee cafes everywhere, but they don’t necessarily sell coffee! It’s where you can buy weed! We ended our day with a little shopping at Dam Square. We’ll have a quiet evening on the ship with new friends and get ready to head back home tomorrow. The Tulip Cruise was quite an adventure!Read more

    Rotterdam the Netherlands

    April 11 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 61 °F

We took an excursion to Keukenhof Park to see the world’s largest spring blooming garden. The garden covers 80 acres. Tulips are definitely center stage here, but the garden also features other spring flowers, including hyacinths, daffodils, lilies, roses, carnations and irises. Each fall, 40 gardeners spend 2 months planting 7 million bulbs by hand. To ensure continuous bloom, three bulbs are planted in each location at different layers. The bulbs are donated by over 100 growers. Surprisingly, Keukenhof Park is only open for 2 months each year. It is impossible to capture the beauty of this garden.

This afternoon Rebecca and I explored a little of the city of Rotterdam which is the largest port in Europe. The city was pretty much destroyed during WWII and has been completely rebuilt. They have the most unusual architecture. It is definitely a playground of modern design and anything goes. The most striking example of this is the cube house whose purpose is high density housing to optimize the space inside.
The day ended with our captain taking us on a cruise around the harbor.

    Amsterdam

    April 10 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

    Amsterdam Airport

    April 5 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

    Stay tuned… 😊

    The long way down

    January 2 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

Finally, the day had arrived… mixed emotions leaving the family for a full three weeks, but that was balanced out by the adventure of visiting the southernmost part of the world, with some of the most pristine and magical nature on Earth. Still, an extra long hug and kiss at the airport :)

Packing started slowly during the Christmas days, but on the 1st of January, the thought of “this will not fit in my duffle bag” started to creep in. A quick and structured packing session showed that everything fit well in the gigantic bag and carry-on. The only items missing are the newer binoculars and new sunglasses that I bought, but both got stuck in the post-Christmas logistical bottleneck, so I’ll manage with what I have :)

The first leg to Amsterdam is done—smooth, and it left time for coffee and a meet-up with my dear colleague Steffan, who will also join the trip for the next 19 days.

Now, off to a looooong sleep and movie-watching across the sea to Buenos Aires, 14 hours ahead of us in the air. Estimated arrival time is 07:00 local time (11:00 DK time).

    Amsterdam Royal Palace

    December 28, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

Started this morning with a walk up to the Royal Palace for a tour at 10am. It’s very cold today (1 degree) but lovely and warm in the palace.

The palace was originally built as the Amsterdam Town Hall for the council, but soon came to be used by Louis Bonaparte and after that, the House of Orange, who ruled the Netherlands.

Some great examples throughout of the empire furniture style.

    Some more Amsterdam

    November 12, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Today I just stayed in Amsterdam and biked around a bunch. I visited the Rijksmuseum and saw some Van Gogh, Rembrandt and ship models. Afterwards I had a burger and a beer in a "Food Hallen" but I forgot to take pictures of these. I decided to catch the free ferry over to Amsterdam Noord to see a more modern biodiverse part of the city. Later on, I rode past Anne Frank's house on a night ride and had New York (or is that Old Amsterdam) slice for dinner. (Also forgot to take a picture of that).Read more
