    Offday 1 in Oslo

    Not much to say except that I’m exhausted. But being parked right in the center of Oslo has its perksgood coffee is never far away. It feels a bit strange to be parked like this, but it's also cool that we get to stay here for four nights.

    I went shopping again with Bella and a few others, exploring the Norwegian UFF and continuing my search for new pants at this point, I really need a pair.

    Bella and I ended up at Lululemon, one of her favorite stores, and later grabbed a bite at Max Burger, a Scandinavian fast-food chain with some healthier options.

    Back at the Luna bus, we hung out with the others for a while. At some point, I headed to my own bus (Sol bus) and got invited for a good whisky with Martin and Chris. Around midnight, I finally made my way to my bunk.    Read more

    2nd day between Surström and an old abandoned car junkyard in the middle of nowhere. On the way we went through woods and some cars came off the road... But the team helped and in the evening everyone could eat something.

    Polynesia to the Polar Regions

    More museums today. We started at the amazing KonTiki museum which houses the original Kon Tiki raft built and sailed by Norwegian Thor Hyerdahl from Peru to Tahiti in 1947 to prove that early South American mainlanders could have traveled to Tahiti and other Pacific Ocean destinations. Much later, DNA evidence from Easter Island natives (and their chickens) demonstrated that there had been ties with the southern continent. When we were on Easter Island in 2022, we saw stone walls identical to Inca construction in Cusco and Machu Picchu and also learned about Heyerdahl's excavations on that island. Several hundred small carved statues from Easter Island are included in this excellent museum. Heyerdahl comes across as a great adventurer who was also a bit of a crackpot, but the museum is fascinating.

    Across the street from the KonTiki museum is the Fram museum, housing the ship Norwegian explorers Fridtjof, Sverdrup, and Wisting unsuccessfuly sailed in 1893 in search of the North Pole; in 1911, Roald Amundsen took it to Antartica where he was first to complete an expedition to the South Pole. The ship is in great shape now, and visitors can wander its decks and cabins and see where the sled dogs slept en route.

    When we got back to downtown Oslo, we learned that our ship had been delayed so they're putting us up overnight and busing us early tomorrow to Kristiansand where we'll board and continue on as scheduled. We're getting anxious to see some Northern Lights!!!    Read more

    Heute war wieder ein ganz normaler Tag, wäsche waschen, aufräumen, ein paar Termine, alles einpacken und am Abend noch ein neuer Weihnachstmarkt erkunden. Die Temperatur war Heute ziemlich kälter als die letzten Tage, Morgen gehts weiter Richtung Norden mal schauen was und da das Wetter zeigt😎Read more

    Museum Day

    Museums were on the agenda today, starting with the incredible new Munch museum. Everyone recognizes The Scream, but almost all Munch's work has remained in Norway. We visited here in 2019, and the previous Munch museum was housed in a tiny building with little to see. That's all changed with the completion of this incredible new 13 story museum which houses hundreds of his paintings, bronze castings, woodblock prints, etc. This is a "must see" attraction for anyone visiting Oslo.

    A lively Christmas fair is in full swing along a pedestrian walkway, and the Grand Hotel is gearing up for tomorrow night's Nobel Peace Price award and banquet.

    Next, we took a tour of the playwright Henrik Ibsen's lavish apartment adjacent to the theatre built for his plays. Fascinating tour about a fascinating writer!

    Norwegian Literary Notes: besides Ibsen, check out Karl Ove Knausgard ( "My Struggle") who represents great contemporary Norwegian writing while Sigrid Undset ("Kristin Lavransdatter") packs 14th century Norwegian life into her 1000 page novel. She won the Nobel Literature prize a century ago. I'm almost finished with it but it could have used, in my humble opinion, some judicious pruning. Fascinating nevertheless.

    Spejder Sport Spikes im Einsatz 😅

    Anders als vom Wetteebericht vorhergesagt zeigte sich heute überraschend die Sonne. Wir machten uns am Morgen auf den Weg ins Munch Museum - schliesslich wollten wir den Oslo Pass so richtig ausnutzen. Wir hatten vom obersten Stock nicht nur eine tolle Aussicht über die Stadt, sondern haben auch Edvard Munchs berühmtes Gemälde „der Schrei“ gesehen (natürlich mit gaaaanz vielen anderen Menschen, die unbedingt ein Foto machen wollten). Danach spazierten wir am Opernhaus vorbei und fuhren dann in Richtung Holmenkollen, wo wir uns die berühmte Skisprungschanze ansehen wollten. Je weiter wir fuhren, desto weisser wurde es. Wir hatten zwar nur Sneakers an, haben aber in weiser Voraussicht unsere in Kopenhagen gekauften Spejder Sport Spikes eingepackt. Diese kamen dann gleich nach dem Aussteigen zum Einsatz. Dass das so gut funktioniert, hätten wir nicht gedacht. Während andere auch in Winterschuhen rutschten, spazierten wir gemütlich den Hügel hinauf. An der gewaltigen Sprungschanze angekommen, gabs zuerst einen Rundgang durchs Museum. Hier wird die Geschichte des Skifahrens sowie des Skisprung- und Langlaufsports sehr cool dargestellt. Mit dem Lift bis ganz nach oben und von dort aus hatten wir einen atemberaubenden Blick auf Oslo und die verschneite Landschaft rundherum. Bei einem wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang ging es dann, dank den Spejder Sport Spikes ohne zu rutschen, zurück zum Bahnhof und wieder Richtung Oslo. Den Rest des Weges gingen wir von der Innenstadt zu Fuss zu unserem Airbnb und gönnten uns auf dem Weg noch einen feinen Hotdog. Jetzt freuen wir uns natürlich auf den Riesenslalom in Beaver Creek.Read more

    Museums Tag

    Ein regenerischer Tag in Oslo war gerade perfekt für uns, den so konnten wir die verschiedenen Museen besuchen die wir geplant hatten. Als erstes ging es ins Fram Museum wo das legendäre Polarschiff Fram und die kleinere Gjøa und viele weitere spannend Artefakte aus den Polar Expeditionen ausgestellt sind. Weiter gings ins Kon-Tiki Museum wo wir das Floss von Thor Heyerdahl bestaunen konnten und mehr über seine geschichte erfuhren. Auf dem Weg zurück kamen wir sowieso am Folksmuseum vorbei und so statteten wir auch dem noch einen Besuch ab. Innerhalb gabs es einen kleinen hübschen Weihnachtsmarkt und ein grosses Freilichtmuseum.

    Tag 4 - Oslo

    Seit Kopenhagen hat die MS Artania 277 Seemeilen zurückgelegt. Um 7:30 h nimmt das Schiff den Lotsen auf und beginnt mit der Fahrt auf dem Oslo Fjord. Wie geplant erreichen wir um 12 Uhr die norwegische Hauptstadt Oslo.

    Das Wetter:
    Bewölkt, minus 2 bis plus 2 Grad, ab nachmittags hat’s dann leicht geschneit.

    Heute nach dem Mittagessen gingen wir in die Stadt, in die Einkaufsmeile, der Karl Johans Gate. Auf unserem Weg dorthin, passierten wir u.a. die Oslo Badstuforening. Hierbei handelt es sich um Areale, auf denen sich kleine schwimmende Saunen befinden. Die Beheizung der Saunen erfolgt mit Holz und zum Abkühlen springt Mann oder Frau direkt ins Meer. Auch heute, bei diesen winterlichen Temperaturen ließen sich Hartgesottene nicht davon abhalten. Respekt!

    Die Einkaufsmeile und Geschäfte präsentierten sich in weihnachtlich geschmücktem Outfit und beeindruckten durch eine herrliche Lichtillumination.

    Nicht fehlen durfte der Besuch des Weihnachtsmarktes. Ein sehr große, längliche Eisbahn bildet das Zentrum. Rings um die Eisbahn gibt es Weihnachtsbuden, in denen wie bei uns, Getränke und Speisen sowie Handwerkskunst wie Bekleidung typischer norwegischer Art angeboten werden. Einen Glühwein, so wie wir ihn kennen sucht man genauso wie eine Bratwurst, Fischbrötchen oder Nierenspieß vergebens.
    Nachdem es keinen Glühwein gab, probierten wir den angebotenen Glogg. Dieser schmeckt zuckersüß und ist Geschmacksache. Vom Preis her liegt der Glogg bei ca. EUR 5,20 für 0,25 lt. Aber Norwegen ist für uns schon immer etwas teurer.

    Ein wenig überrascht waren wir von der Tageslichtdauer. Der Sonnenaufgang war um 9 Uhr und bereits um 15:15 Uhr ist‘s dann schon wieder dunkel.

    Heute Abend gibt es auf dem Schiff einen Weihnachtsmarkt mit Glühwein, Punsch, Bratwurst, also allem, was man auf einem kleinen Weihnachtsmarkt verzehren kann. Das gesamte Team hat tagsüber fleißig gewerkelt und hat das gesamte Pooldeck umgebaut. Weihnachtsbuden, eine tolle Dekoration und die passende Lichttechnik werden für das notwendige Ambiente sorgen, uns in die vorweihnachtliche Zeit zu versetzen. Hoffentlich schneit es dazu noch ein wenig.

    Um 22 Uhr verlassen wir Oslo und nehmen dann wieder Kurs Richtung Hamburg.    Read more

    Day 15–18

    Oslo

    We arrived in Oslo in the late afternoon, very excited to be in a new country and shower and wash clothes after our 11 days living in a campervan. Our Airbnb was very cute, on the 5th floor very central in the city. That evening we just walked to “Oslo Streetfood” where we enjoyed beers and Thai for dinner in the underground food market hub. The next day we walked all day and our first stop was the Munch museum. We have both agreed this is the best art museum we’ve ever been to. It was a modern building containing 11 floors of Edvard Munch’s work. He was an amazing artist and we got to see the very famous “Scream”. We spent a lot of time here, quietly pacing around and looking at the art and also had drinks on the rooftop bar that overlooks the harbour. We walked around the harbour and walked on top of the Opera house. We continued our walk and explored the Akershus Fortress which was built in 1299 and is now used as a royal residence and army barracks. It was so nice to walk through the old buildings. In the evening we went to a wine bar called Territoriet which played vinyl and was very small but had an amazing wine list with almost everything by the glass under Coravin. Iesha was so happy. Iesha got to try one of the very renowned producers; Roulot, and Eth had a 1er Patrick Puize Chablis. From there we walked to find dinner which was a bit difficult but eventually after a lot of walking found a cute Italian restaurant and we got to try reindeer finally! It was way less gamey than we expected and tasted like a tender steak. Very yum. Our last day in Oslo consisted of even more walking. We walked to the Vigeland Sculpture Park which showcases a lot of Gustav Vigeland’s works. This Norwegian sculpture is super famous over here and very renowned - he even designed the Nobel Peace Prize medal that is still used today. The park was absolutely stunning - with waterfalls and tall statues, it felt like something out of the hunger games. This part of Oslo (suburb of Frogner) was the Oslo we imagined. More out of the city it had beautiful, colourful old architecture and more quiet and pretty streets. We loved the walk. We kept exploring the streets and also visited the Royal Palace, which you can walk fully around and really close to the entrance. For an early dinner we went to a place called Mathallen which is an upmarket “food court” but with individual restaurants that you can eat in or sit in the centre. We loved it here and it was very popular and vibey. We ate from 3 different restaurants, starting with raclette baguettes and champagne , donuts and then pulled chicken burgers. This kind of food hall is a gold mine idea and massive hole in the Perth market, we can’t think of any actually nice food halls with a variety of good quality, fresh food and decent prices back home.Read more

    Oslo

    Om 07:30 uur arriveren we in Oslo met de Rotterdam. Vandaag precies een jaar geleden trouwden we op de oude Rotterdam in Rotterdam. Voor vandaag staat een excursie op het programma. Na een rondrit door Oslo bezochten we het Vigeland park. Het Vigeland park telt 212 stenen en bronzen beelden, die alle tussen 1907 en 1942 zijn gemaakt door de Noorse beeldhouwer Gustav Vigeland. De beelden symboliseren de kringloop van het menselijk leven en omdat het een tijdloos geheel moest zijn, zijn alle menselijke figuren naakt uitgebeeld. Onderaan de brug is de ontwikkeling van een embryo tot een kleuter te zien, terwijl rondom de monoliet alle levensstadia van de mens te zien zijn. Op de monoliet zelf staan op elkaar klimmende menselijke figuren afgebeeld. De figuren zijn gemaakt uit brons en steen. Heel bijzonder om te zien.
    Na het Vigeland bezochten we de skischans waar in 2011 het wereldkampioenschap skispringen is gehouden. Indrukwekkend hoog en stijl, niet voor te stellen dat skispringers hier vanaf durven springen. Daarna verder naar het maritieme museum, ook erg leuk en tot slot het nationale openlucht folkmuseum. Hier zijn historische houten Noorse bouwwerken te zien waaronder de oudste Noorse kerk waar omheen alle andere bouwwerken zijn opgetrokken.    Read more
