Day 4 Viana de Castela to Caminha 30.9k

    April 7 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Great start as I didn't have breakfast... or coffee for that matter.

Beautiful walking in the am as it is cool and refreshing Spring flowers are popping up... Like poppies( one of my favorites)

Had a tostada for breakfast Jan ( the polish guy who is near deaf and blind) was there. We ended up walking together to Caminha.

I don't know how he manages.... He never books accomodations and does not navigate at all on any GPS app. I basically steered him in the right direction although my sense of direction isn't great either even with All Trails app🤣😂🤣

He took a bad fall at one point on slippery cobblestones🥴

But managed to keep going. Very determined!!

So.... I learned something important yesterday..... I am thinking they measure distances between points from the church in each town..... Because I couldn't figure out why my distance was so huge when I was expecting 26km.... The church was4 km from where I started. Yikes!!! I won't lie.... The last couple of kms felt like a marathon.

Of course Jan had no reservation I did.... He wanted to go to the
Municipal hostel and it was further than mine. He ended up staying at my hostel as there was 1 bed available.

Delicious home cooked pasta, ( with zucchini, beans, greens) salad and bread for supper🤗🥳

Oh yes and the hostel has a beautiful garden and Epsom salts foot bath!!!

I decided to stay another night
    Rest Day tomorrow💕💕😉👍

  • Day 6

Had a decent sleep. Cooked eggs for breakfast. Beautiful morning. No rain👍

I walked along the boardwalk for awhile. Then it changed to concrete and cobblestones which are very difficult to walk on for long periods. The trail then went through a muddy stream through a beautiful eucalyptus forest.

Some steep hills up and down but I enjoyed the variety.

I always find the last 4-5 km the most difficult as it gets hotter and hotter ... Which I do like.... Don't get me wrong 😂🤣 Not Complaining!

Again very friendly people helping me to keep on course🤗♥️

The last km was over a gnarly bridge. At the end were stairs and I fell at the top. Luckily it wasn't serious.... Only my elbow bled a lot and I bruised my pinky....

I arrived at the hostel after trying to figure out how to cross the tracks🧐🤔🥴
I finally figured it out and arrived at the Carmelite convent hostel.

The nun attended to me right away which was wonderful. I met a woman from Washington State that had a loose board from the boardwalk slap her in the face!!! She is luckily OK but I suggested x-rays at some point especially with a dentist.

The Convent was a maze....you needed GPS to find your bedroom and the kitchen was at least 800 metres from the rooms!!

    Day 15:Stg 2-Esposende-Viana do Castro

    March 26 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Today was the stage from Esposende to Viana do Castro. I had planned on 15 miler but per my Fitbit - I walked 18 miles. So tired.

The walk started out walking along cobblestone streets - everyone said good morning to me. Some of the same people during the route - but my cohort was a lovely gal from a town in Germany that is close to Cologne. She walked by at a good speed but then she took long breaks where I would pass her by. While walking, I stopped at a cafe to get a break and the lady there said I must eat more for walk. So she made me toast - with my cappuccino that came to a total of 2 euros.

The trail started through a protected forest and it was strange as I had no one around. But it was nice to be on a trail - then you crossed this stone bridge. That’s where I took a long break. Many walkers crossed while I hung out. Then up and up we went until we found a pretty church and everyone stopped for a break. Met a Mom and daughter from Taiwan. Also met a cute cat who was talking a mile a minute to me as I scratched him and then he showed me his belly.

After that the trails were all over the place and uphill. We had to ford creeks and mud - and large stones. Felt like at home at Point Defiance. After the trails I chatted with a guy from Germany - we had laughs about getting old with all our pain.

Then the next section was brutal with cobblestones and trails - and more hills. The worse was the bridge over the river - two lanes of traffic, narrow sidewalk and no barrier to cars. When someone came the other way - you waited for space between cars. Also very and steep incline to get to top. Scary.

What a crazy leg in my spirituality!

    Tag 12: Nahezu perfekter Tag…

    March 12 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

But thats part of the camino…

Santa Luzia de Viana do Castelo

    December 11, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 6 °C

🤩Read more

Day 6 -23 km to Viladesuso

    October 25, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

So long Portugal, Ola Spain. Today was a mix of wind, rain and sun. It also got a bit colder. Maybe the time of year and maybe because I’m moving North. Regardless, the walk, vistas, ocean breeze and roaring waves were uplifting. This morning I was thrilled when the water taxi driver said he has family in Halifax and NFLD. He’s one of the few people I’ve met that knew eastern Canada goes beyond Toronto or Montreal. He was quite chatty but sadly I didn’t understand much. After about a five min ride we started walking through a beautiful park along the coast. It was a variety of well marked and maintained trails all day.. The infrastructure across much of Portugal and Spain to accommodate Pilgrims is quite unbelievable. Very well done.. The trails, the albergues, the cafes ( some in unexpected locations) make the adventure (except the walking) quite easy and more enjoyable.
I loved the walk today. It was one of my favourite. But, i was glad to settle at a nice, clean shared hostel

Day 9 Caminha to Villa Nova De Cerveira

    September 29, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Today was not as enjoyable as the previous days. I walk through some very hilly residential areas and then down by the river. I am now at my hostel I was pleasantly surprised that I had booked my own room. There’s nothing like having your own room when you’re used to sleeping with a bunch of people in bunkbeds.Read more

    Caminha Pt 2

    September 22, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

What a day, what a day.

After another night of restlessness, thanks to a few winners in the hostel, I was up early today (like real early) and on the road before the sunrise. My plan was to get to Caminha, which I was able to do, but it was a long day on the road. Unfortunately, there really is a race to find a bed at the next stop, as all of the pilgrims from the central Camino have migrated to the coast due to the wild fires. Thankfully, I've booked something ahead of time for tomorrow.

Being a bit of a competitive person, I have a difficult time stopping or resting because then I have to watch people pass me on the trail. This means I also don't stray from the trail to find a washroom, and I only stop when it presents itself. Today, there were no such washrooms, and after 10+ kilometers on the trail, I was getting desperate. At the top of a trail in the forest, with no one visible behind me, I found a little space behind a rock on the left side of the road. I put my stuff down, did my business, and when I stood up and turned around, there was a couple sitting on the stone wall directly across from me. Normally, I would be mortified, but at that moment, I just laughed, put my stuff back on, and said, "Buen Camino!".

Tomorrow, I begin my trek inward, leaving the coast to connect with the central route. In 24 hrs, I will be halfway through my journey, and in 48 hours, I will be in Spain!

    31.2 kms + 56 flights of stairs
