Day 8 - The long haul to Logroño

    May 5 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

    Los Arcos to Logroño
    30.1km
I knew it was a long day ahead, and as I woke up early I de used to hit the road. Got walking at 6.30 and beat the sun, but others were too. Relatively easy walking to Torre del Rio for first coffee stop. I’m still battling a cold so coffee plus orange juice.
The onwards tracks were good for walking, but generally inclining with the occasional steep climb. There was a sobering moment after Torres del Rio with many many cairns and memorials for loved ones, some who had died on the trail.
Company was good today, Cass from Perth, Melissa from Perth, Ian from Cape Town, and Nora from Finland. Spent time chatting with each.
The promised rain came in at 10am, my new umbrella held up well, but is amusing to see all the coloured ponchos bobbing along like turtles.
A really amusing moment in Viana when we were pulled aside by two policemen, only to find that they were on admission to find pilgrims, stamp their pilgrim passports, and give a momento. So good.
Reached Logroño at about 2.30pm which exceeded expectations. Feet very sore and right shoe has spat the dummy.
After a bit of drama eventually into the Air BnB with a friendly host, collect my luggage, have a well earned shower, then a bit of exploring. The Cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda is imposing and pretty special, it even has its own little Michelangelo!
Finished the evening with a fantastic polpo before an early night ahead of another big day.
    Accumulated distance 178.0km
Moment of the day was being stopped by the policemen, just so good.

    To Logroño

    May 2 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

Trying to sleep with 20 other tired pilgrims in one large room on bunk beds has its challenges. Like synchronized snoring and the door to the bathroom shutting hard all through the night.
All that to say, we didn’t get much sleep last night. 😬
After coffee and breakfast about 0700 we set off on the 21km ( 13ish miles ) walk to Logroño. It’s pretty much all steep uphill for the first hour then levels off a bit on the ridge you just climbed to. About 3 hours in you could hear thunder and see lightning in the distance in the ominous gray skies. Thunder rolled and the clouds opened. Small hail, big rain and lightning bolts a plenty as we picked up the pace towards Logroño.
Found a cafe in Viana - about half way to our destination and ducked in for Cafe con leche and a second breakfast and a chance to shelter a while.
The rain slowed and off we went.
Slogged into Logroño and found our Hostel about 1400. A private room with our own bathroom. Whooohooo! We’ll sleep tonight!
The rain had stopped so we hung wet clothes on balcony rails to dry, rested a bit then out into this beautiful city for some Friday evening R&R. Tapas, Spanish wine and ice cream with a thousand other people walking in narrow streets and enjoying this community is good for the soul.
    Life is good!

Jour 9 Los Arcos à Viana

    April 27 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

    Sansol

    April 19 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

I made it! Very tasty burger here at cafe/bar. Warm in the sun. Cafe video for atmosphere.

Staying in Albergue Karma. It’s kind of funky, maybe a little dusty smelling, but it has character. I even kind of scored a private room since I got here before others. It’s not really private, but there’s no one sleeping on a bunk above me. See video.Read more

Day 8 - Torres del Rio, Spain

    September 26, 2024 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 75 °F

    398 Miles to Santiago

We have a routine now: rise, pack, walk, eat, walk, arrive at hostel, shower, wash clothes, find dinner, collapse into bed. We experienced beautiful countryside today, walking long paths along farm fields for most of the day.

Many people travel the Camino through these villages, and local people often greet us with ‘Buen Camino!’ Today a van slowed down as I walked along the road, and the driver wished me ‘Buen Camino,’ along with his young daughter. Also, as we walk along and pass by other pilgrims, we wish each other ‘Buen Camino!’

    Longest Day So Far

    September 17, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Just like the 2nd day, there was no room at the inn at today's suggested finish point of Los Arcos. The nearest accommodation we could find when planning the trip was in Torres del Rio, a further 5 miles along the route. No consolation for today but at least tomorrow will be significantly shorter.

After a mile and a half we reached Irache and the wine fountain. Where from the 10th century, monks have been offering pilgrims wine to ease their journey. However, in the mid eighties the community of monks left due to their own dwindling numbers and a local winery took up the tradition. It's now self service, two taps, one for wine and one for water, not sure the latter gets used much. The wine itself won't win any awards but I have tasted worse. So we took a little with us for later as it wasn't even 8am when we got there.

Afterwards as we climbed up through a wooden hillside I did comment that the route seemed a lot quieter today only to be told later by someone else, that we weren't on the main route but had taken the alternative scenic route involving more climbing. However, it was worth it for the views and the relative solitude.

After taking a half hour break in Los Arcos, the fairly flat extra 5 miles seemed to fly by and we were finished by 14:15. My calf was ok until 11 miles and is now more sore than yesterday. It's only 12.5 miles tomorrow and then a day off so hopefully that will help with the recovery.

    Luquin to Torres Del Rio

    September 13, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We walked 20km today and it was easy. No big climbs, easy paths amongst rolling hills with beautiful light in the morning especially. Starting to get the hang of things. We could have easily walked further today but the next town is another 10km and they call the next stretch the “knee breaker” due to the up and down. Tomorrow we will walk 20km into the next city Logrono but now that Ed is more used to it doesn’t feel daunting to push him a bit. Logrono is a city so we will try and rent bike there. Fingers crossed we can. We have both been in good spirits today. Tonight’s meal wasn’t much chop & the albergue lacks character but we’re going to bed tired and happy.Read more

Day 4: Sansol to Longrono. 22.6 km

    September 3, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Shortish day to get to Longrono, the centre of the La Rioja wine region. As a result, we walked between many small holding vineyards in overcast and pleasantly cool conditions. Body still getting used to walking kind distances every day ; stiff and sore after each day. People who’ve done previous Caminos say that by second week we’ll be storming. I hope so - there are a lot of kilometres left to do.

The previous evening we spent in our first full-noise bunk house in Sansol, which was well appointed, but just busy. All kinds of bodily sounds in the night, including my own. Hostel put on a massive paella night for pilgrims, copious La Rioja red wine as well as entertainment. But us old people were too tired to carry on and in our bunk bed by 9pm. Jury is out for us whether we use the bunk rooms as a main place to sleep. We have found places with twin bed room and shower for 10 euro extra which suits us old men fine.

So right now in Longrono, which has a famous street full of tapas bars and, you guessed it, La Rioja reds. It’s times like this that I knew so something about wines. Small Paul and I heading down there now, where the other pilgrims are gathering.

    Sansol to Logroño

    August 18, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    Cloud cover for the win!

A bit of a cooler day for most of our walk today with temps around 23 degrees. Definitely felt warmer when the sun came out. from behind the clouds.

All kinds of trail treats today with handfuls of wild blackberries and a couple sweet grapes. Fields of really pretty olive trees too.

Logroño is a decent sized city with a population around 200k. In the centre of town we visited The Cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda, a gorgeous building with an elaborate facade and an image attributed to Michelangelo. The craftsmanship is beyond impressive!

Early night for the fam tonight as we plan for another big kilometre day tomorrow.
