    ✨ 183 & proud ✨

    May 8 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

    Taipei to Taichung

    Wo soll ich anfangen?

7/11 for the win!!
    8. Ich habe 7h nichts gemacht beim radln. Keine Musik, kein Podcast. Schon sehr gestört oder?

    Yesterday in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Let‘s do this!

    A forest of ferns

    December 12, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

We jumped on the bikes straight away this morning. I was on a tandem bike with mum, I just had to sit back and relax! I did peddle sometimes because it was heaps of fun. We visited caves and one of them was called Black Devil Cave. It was a big cave and we had to really squeeze through it. It was actually a bit scary some parts.
We came across lots of beautiful ferns when we were walking around, dad gets excited when there is nice plants.
The ferns were at Beauty Cave- they should change it to Fern Cave.
We had to ride on the right side of the road - I think mum was nervous some times.
We did ride to an icecream shop but didn't get one because the man said we all had to buy something for at least $100 each. That was a bit annoying so we didn't get one.
We walked around the town area at night but not much was opened. We found a man with a taco stall set up so had some and then of course we ended up at the beef noodle soup shop.
The island is quiet at the moment because it is the middle of winter. It's good not to have heaps of people walking around though.
The coolest thing about the island is the turtles. There are about 800 of them swimming around the island and we certainly saw lots of them.

    Exploring Taichung

    August 21, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ 🌙 28 °C

After a stress free travel day yesterday (fly from Bangkok to Taipei, then fast train to Taichung, with a hot pot for dinner) we were ready to explore. When we started, the forecast had a 60% chance of thunderstorms, but luckily this never eventuated. Just some gusty wind which kept the temperature reasonable.

First stop was the Confucius Temple. It was a pretty nondescript temple, but quite peaceful inside. Very well maintained, and with a pretty garden and pond filled with fish and turtles.

Taiwan is well known for its bubble tea, and Taichung claims to be the birthplace of bubble tea. So naturally we hunted out the original bubble tea store to sample the goods. We ordered an original bubble tea as well as a jasmine & honey tea. Both were delicious, not too sweet and not overpowering, but with a very flavourful tea taste. The setting was very calm, cool and relaxing, with little water fountains and plants decorating the space. We couldn't help ourselves and also ordered some mochi balls to go with the tea.

Next we made our way to a little street market, which was selling cute handmade goods, such as fabric coffee/tea holders, jewellery, alongside the other usual market wares. It was nice to see that it was mostly handmade goods, and not mass produced junk that you find in so many other markets. Vela was intrigued by the film camera store at the end of the market street, and having never experienced the disposable camera era of the 90s, she purchased one to play around with - hopefully we can find somewhere to develop them once we're back...

We passed a cheesecake ice-cream store called "Pretty Wife Eat Cheese", so naturally had to stop for the pretty wife to get a photo eating cheese. Vela spent the rest of the afternoon checking out some stores in a mall, while Nathan found a quiet corner to sit down and read.

In the evening, we headed back out onto the streets to try out one of the night markets. Full of food, lights, and people, we found plenty of food to feed us both for less than 20nzd. This included deep fried stinky tofu, some barbecued meats (and offal), cheesy corn, deep-fried & flame-grilled chicken, and a green bean milkshake for dessert.

    Yum!

    Exploring Taichung... kindof

    July 1, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

Went to the night market around 6pm for dinner - learned to say "thank you" in Mandarin
Had some fried noodle with pork (still struggling with chopsticks)
Discovered that the shops stay open much later than in SA
Spent some money on claw machines and got strawberry flavoured treats (will let you know how they are once we've opened them)
These claw machine "shops" stay open till 1am
THEY HAVE COSTCO (it is huge)
Went to Decathlon - best sports gear shop I've seen in my life
Asked "What is that?" about many buildings we walked/drove past

    National Taiwan Museum of Comics

    April 22, 2024 in Taiwan ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Continuing the theme of today we moved onto the Museum of Comics, although we weren't quite sure what it was from the reviews but looked interesting. I still can't tell you what it was, but can confirm it was interesting!

There was art work, comics, beautiful Japanese style houses, and building destroying banyan trees! So much fun to wander around, albeit confused, for free on a Monday morning.
